Okay Film 6.6/10.

Production: Pretty basic all around. Nothing really stands out, but it isn't bad. Some continuity issues just like every other film. The music really sets the tone of the film. The script is a little dull/generic. 6/10.

On Screen: The acting was okay. Lakeith Stanfield made his character Michael Block, believable but, on the other hand, Issa Rae's character Mae Morton, wasn't. She didn't really have acting range. It's like she is uncomfortable the entire film. Additionally, the secondary characters are just cookie cutouts typical love movie motifs. Also, there are some plot holes that made the secondary story a little confusing. 6/10.

Content/Impact: To see black love portrayed in film is a rarity in itself. The best way to describe this film is love. The love that they show between black men and women, black women, and black men in a positive light, for the most part, is essential to tell our stories from a normalized perspective. This is what happens when we tell our own stories. 8/10.

Overall: It's a solid Valentine's day film to see with your loved ones, but because of the slow nature of this film, the performances needs to be outstanding and this falls short. I'll give it an 6.6/10.

Different Feeling & Vibe

As a filmmaker and writer, this project is very different to see on the screen. For as long as I can remember, there are not many movies like this with an all black cast telling a story such as this with a great budget. No stereotypes or crazy upside down story, it's something very soothing and relaxing. The music definitely was a great addition to the film. The main cast did an excellent job portraying the characters. Hoping for more black movies such as this to hit the big/small screens. It's our time to shine in a positive light!

Despite the quality of the writing, plots and sub plots, this fell a little short for me

The Photograph (2020) is a movie my fiancée and I caught in theaters as soon as it was released. The story centers around a woman who feels incapable of finding happiness without sabotaging it-something that plagued her mother and that she believes she inherited. Meanwhile, a man she meets has a father who regrets not pursuing the love of his life, instead choosing to stick with what was safe and familiar. Both characters hope to learn from their parents' mistakes and make better choices for their futures.

Directed by Stella Meghie (The Weekend), the film stars Issa Rae (Insecure), LaKeith Stanfield (Get Out), Lil Rel Howery (Bird Box), Chanté Adams (Bad Hair), and Y'lan Noel (Insecure).

The storyline is solid and well-paced, and I appreciated how the various love stories were intertwined. The concept and writing were strong, but the acting was unfortunately uneven. Issa Rae often plays awkward characters, and in this role, I'm not sure it suited her skillset. The chemistry between her and Stanfield felt forced and unnatural, more acted than believable. Despite the quality writing and engaging subplots, the film fell a bit short for me.

That said, it's still a good movie with a worthwhile story, even if it doesn't reach the emotional heights of something like The Notebook. I'd give it a solid 7/10.

Slow paced but beautifully shot and wonderfully acted.

Fueled by the fiery chemistry between Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield, "The Photograph" gives viewers a love story that transcends time and is worth sticking around for. . In this romantic drama, the estranged daughter of a famous photographer falls in love with the journalist who is investigating her late mother's life. . Beautifully shot, wonderfully acted and even original at times, "The Photograph" is slow paced and won't be for everyone but the pay out is worth it. Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield burn up the screen with their intense performances, you'd think they were actually a couple. I thought the premise was interesting and even though "The Photograph" is not perfect, it felt good to watch a romantic drama; a genre that isn't as tackled in this day and age of film. . Really boring

This film is just very boring. The story is contrived, and I cannot connect with any of the characters at all. The constant heavy rain outside is annoying as well.

Cool and Sexy

The soundtrack to this movie is the smoothest I've heard in a long time. This was a slick movie to listen to and to watch. A Love Jones redux if you will. The acting by Lakeith and Issa was solid although, I feel that Lakeith was given more to do. We get two stories that intertwine but the problem is that I didn't feel for the lead characters (the mom, and Issa Rae's character). I wanted to root and cheer for them, but we weren't given much to go on. The script was like the shell of a house. Great start, but then you forgot to add the plumbing, floors, doors, insulation, etc... There are a lot of stolen glances, soft touches, and sip and smiles but I didn't care about the relationship between Issa and Lakeith either way. I realllllly wanted to like the film more than I did, but I just felt indifferent about it. And for a movie in the romance genre, you really need to have characters you cheer for, even if they don't end up together.

The Photograph - Needs Fresh Developer

It can't get much more boring than this turgid 'romantic' soap. It's a movie that's been created to sell a sound track, with rather bland, nonstop songs filling in for the lack of any worthwhile writing. Coochy love scenes standing in for any real emotional commitment does not a good movie make.

More like this please

Finally a film showing beautiful brown actors in normal, healthy and mature relationships, telling a romantic story where neither race, violence nor toxic, dysfunctional behavior are used as crux. Love scenes between the characters and the family portrayals were far more realistic than we've seen with typical films featuring people of color. In fact the fact that the characters were people of color made absolutely no difference- it's as it should be. The musical soundtrack really resonates by subtly showcasing many iconic 80s and contemporary R&B tracks that are generally not in frequent rotation; these brought back so many wonderful, long-forgotten memories. There was no cgi, no gun or other violence, no angry foul behavior ... and we need more films like this. I felt great during and after watching this film and I can't say that about many films these days. Well done.

Good one time type of movie

I thought it was good. The vibe of the film was fluid which is always great. Honestly I think Christina's scenes were the best part of the film. Lakeith and Issa's story line seemed to bland and way to fast and none of the dialogue or the emotions felt impactful. The acting was good, just not the script. The entire film was mellow over all and there was no character arch for the two main characters. Her mother had more of an story arch.

Movie was so slow going it got boring.

Story line was OK but way too much boring conversation. It would have been a much better movie if it was 15 or 20 minutes shorter.

Amazing movie

Amazing movie. A true, simple romance with black people that doesn't frame in slavery (for once). The story is lovely, the imagery, the conversations, the music... everything in this movie makes you feel good. It's just a beautiful storytelling about missed opportunities, the little things in life. A big +1 for the music.

So dull

Being a black female, I love LOVE seeing a good rom com with some brothas and sistas in it!!! I had hoped this would be the 2020 Love Jones type flic... it wasnt. It...was...so...boring. I hate to even tear down a black film, because we need positive representation out there - but Issa needs to stick to TV roles. This ain't it, hon. Kept waiting for it to get better, but it just doesnt.

Beautiful film

I saw this movie on Valentine's Day with my besties, and we were all enamored by the film. Strong nuanced characters and good writing. Oh, and the souundtrack was amazing. It was two love stories in one and both narratives unfolded in a charming way.

Not sure why it's called "The Photograph"

SYNOPSIS: A parallel love story going from past to present between the life of Mae (Issa Rae) and her mother Christina (Chanté Adams)

REVIEW: This film was very average to me. Initially I was very intrigued with the intertwining story from past to present, but as time went on I realized I wasn't getting very attached to either story due to split time on screen. The Director/Writer (Stella Meghie) just through two characters on screen, had them fall in love and added in some drama and expected us as the audience to grab onto it. There was definitely more time spent on the present love story between Mae and Michael (LaKeith Stanfield) and I actually wanted to see more of the past love story. I felt the past love story had something stronger going for it with the layers between Christina wanting to move and follow her aspirations, while Isaac (Y'lan Noel) wanted to stay. Then you had Christina's relationship with her mother that seemed tense and all of that culminated into an interesting premise. I know it sounds like I hated the film at this point, but these issues weren't outrageous. I still found myself enjoying the acting and the film as a whole. You have a couple of strong supporting performances from Rob Morgan and Lil Rel Howery. Then of course LaKeith is always giving a solid performance alongside his co-star, Issa Rae. Ultimately, this film is enjoyable enough, but not enough for me to say everyone should see it or even spend the time and money at a theater for it. It is worth a watch on a lone Wednesday night. 6/10.

Pretty Decentralized

Ok so I thought it was pretty good. Pretty solid storyline. Nothing really stood out though. Just a story. Not a chick flick or anything and a little different from your romance stories. Was really lost at the beginning on who was who and where they were but eventually you got it. I just think the setup was bad and the execution throughout the storyline could have been a little more polished. It's not a must see and I wouldn't see it again.

When in doubt, use light jazz.

When you don't have good writing and there is nothing for the actors to do, just fill void with background music. No wait, they're talking, crank up music. Repeat throughout movie. There was not enough here to be romantic or a comedy, so I guess they were going for the boring genre.

I loved the imagery, the backdrop of New Orleans, the story, though predictable, developed well. Good love story, romantic and endearing.

Two great stories put together really badly.

LaKeith Stanfeild and Issae Rae have really good chemistry I felt. It made it believable that their romance was so perfect. Also like the chemistry that Stanfeild had with Lil Rey Howry who played his big brother. The movie was about two stories. the romance between Stanfeild and Rae's character. Then the movie did flashbacks of Rae's character's mother who had to make a choice between a man she loves and her passion. Both on their own made great stories but the way this movie handle both material was not great. It did not blend together well at all as it jumped from one story to another without any real set up. The jazz score made me think this movie was going to be too adult and sophisticated for my taste but after a while I just felt it was being used to cover what was wrong with the flick. Can't say that I did not like it. That would not be true but I can say is that it could have been better.

Slow and boring, not enough character development

Too slow,, no character development. Therefore, I didn't really care about the characters. Really wanted to like this movie. Glad I saw it for free. Would have left the theater had I had to pay.
