Cobra Kai Creators’ Next Project Is Much Harder Than Reviving Karate Kid
Image
Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are set to revive yet another franchise, and this time it’s a Knight Rider movie, which seems tougher than Karate Kid (via The Hollywood Reporter). They were successful in bringing the Karate Kid legacy back with Cobra Kai, but their next mission seems to be far tougher.

Cobra Kai thrived because of the timeless character drama, but Knight Rider has always been a high-concept gimmick. Now that technology has evolved so much, along with people’s expectations, we’d need more than just a guy and his talking car for the revival to work.

'Cobra Kai' Team Will Adapt Reboot of '80s Action Classic 'Knight Rider'
Image
The creators of Cobra Kai are all set to revive another beloved 1980s property. Cobra Kai was a legacy sequel to The Karate Kid franchise, one that not only gave expanded roles to several stars of the original Karate Kid trilogy but also put the spotlight on a new generation that could carry the franchise forward. Cobra Kai was a critical hit, and when it moved from YouTube Red to Netflix, it became a global sensation, spanning six seasons that concluded in February 2025. Cobra Kai has made The Karate Kid franchise the most popular it has been since the 1980s, and now Universal Pictures hopes the creative team can do...

New ‘Knight Rider’ Movie in the Works From ‘Cobra Kai’ Creators

The creators of Cobra Kai are taking a shadowy flight into the world of a man who does not exist. Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are currently in talks to bring the franchise to the big screen for the first time for Universal Pictures.

‘Psych’ Character No One Remembers Is Played by Karate Kid’s Ralph Macchio
Image
Ralph Macchio is best known for his roles in The Karate Kid movies and their spinoff show, Cobra Kai. But he also played a recurring character in the procedural comedy Psych, and reprised the role in the spinoff movie. Macchio played the role of the anxious yet stern police instructor Nick Conforth.

Macchio has played Daniel La Russo for a better part of his career, starting in the ‘80s with The Karate Kid. After appearing in two more movies, he reprised the role in the spinoff series Cobra Kai, which became an instant hit. Did Xolo Maridueña just hint at his next Netflix project? After starring in the Cobra Kai series and confirming his involvement in the upcoming Blue Beetle animated show, the actor teased that he might be part of the live-action adaptation of One Piece. As the show is scheduled to release its next installment in 2026, there's a chance it could make a surprise appearance.

The Best TV Scores of the Year, According to Our Composers Survey
Image
Television shows often get tagged as “cinematic” when the visuals are particularly big or flashy. But TV scores can provide just as much scope, emotional weight, mood, and tone to a series — dancing backwards in heels against the imagery, sneaking unseen between cuts to create tension the viewer doesn’t even know they’re feeling, or bursting out of the frame to carry us through the most important moments in our favorite TV shows.

It’s all the more impressive given the number of cues TV composers often have to write and how quickly the music has to come together. So, IndieWire reached out to every Emmy-nominated composer this year to ask them which TV scores from the past year were extraordinary, even among the extraordinary challenges every TV score has to solve. The respondents themselves represent a real variety of genres, formats, and styles; and their responses show that — as Kathryn Bostic,...

10 TV Shows Netflix Saved From Being Canceled
Image
Netflix is many different things to many different people. To some, it's the home of gripping original series. To others, it's the perfect laundry-folding service, offering harmless entertainment and light reality shows to put on in the background. But to select TV fans, Netflix is the home for second chances.

As Netflix grew in stature and influence, the streamer needed more content to fill its servers. So it took, and took again, to previously canceled network and cable shows: shows that often had an impassioned but small cult audience. Netflix reunited the main cast and creative team of each show, to try and relight the fire it originally had and provide closure its fans desperately needed. Some experiments were successful. Others, less so. But all are worth talking about in the history of Netflix as a medium disruptor.

Here, then, are 10 TV shows Netflix saved from cancellation. Is your favorite on the list?...

If you can believe it, we're already well past halfway through 2025. Real Reason Why Ralph Macchio ‘Screamed Every Day’ for Karate Kid: Legends to Honor Cobra Kai
Image
Ralph Macchio returned to the big screen for Karate Kid: Legends, but did you know that he also fought to schedule its release at an opportune time, to make sure the movie premieres after the final season of Cobra Kai? Why, you ask? Well, he likely wanted to preserve the emotional arcs of the story, which had a build-up of around seven years.

In Karate Kid: Legends, we saw Jackie Chan and Macchio team up in the shared universe, and in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, here’s what the latter said about the film’s release:

I was screaming constantly every day: “This movie has to come out after the show finishes.”

So, let’s see why the timing of these two projects mattered, and how the delay was required for the story to unfold naturally.

Netflix’s Top Films & TV Series In The Data Dump Era: ‘Squid Game’ Stuns, British Bragging Rights, Plus Why ‘Boss Baby’ & ‘CoComelon’ Are King
Image
Netflix opened its big black box of data for the first time in 2023, lifting the lid on viewing figures for its entire catalog of movies and TV shows in spreadsheets that span tens of thousands of entries.

The so-called “data dump” reports titled “What We Watched,” released every six months, started breaking down the number of views for a title from July 2023, meaning we now have two years of comparable ratings to reflect on.

Deadline combined the data from the four reports to provide a rundown on what Netflix’s 300M-plus subscribers have been watching over the past two years. For transparency, Deadline used ChatGPT to consolidate and comb through the data, but our rankings have been fact-checked and provided to Netflix for comment.

The 15 Netflix Shows That Justify A Subscription
Image
Remember the time in which we were promised that streaming services would eliminate the cost and need of cable? Nowadays, you need approximately 10 streaming services to watch everything you want, and if my math is correct, that's more expensive than cable ever was -- oh, and there are ads now too! Yeah, streaming has become like cable, but somehow much worse.

With the rising cost of life and the economy being about as stable as a one-wheeled tricycle, a lot of people wonder what's necessary and isn't -- especially when it comes to entertainment. Unquestionably, Netflix remains the granddaddy of streaming services, but does it justify a subscription? If you consider the below 15 shows, yeah, it does. These might not be the highest-ranked series on Rotten Tomatoes, nor the most-watched programming according to Tudum, but they're the Netflix shows that make it easier to say, "Okay. I'll pay for one more month.

How To Watch Karate Kid: Legends At Home
Image
"Karate Kid: Legends" is a legacy sequel that bridges the gap between the most disparate corners of the franchise. The film follows O.G. star Daniel LuRusso (Ralph Macchio) and the sensei from the 2010 "Karate Kid" reboot, Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), as they combine their veteran expertise in kung fu and karate to prepare young Li Fong (Ben Wang) for the ultimate martial arts competition. The film offers a prototypical "Karate Kid" story about a young underdog having to overcome the odds, and it's entertaining viewing if you're a fan of flicks of this ilk.

Unfortunately, "Karate Kid: Legends" wasn't a mammoth box office success, earning just $104 million on the back of a $45 million budget. This suggests that the millions of fans who discovered the property through Netflix's hugely successful "Cobra Kai" spin-off series weren't as excited about a new movie set in this universe. However, some viewers will...

Why Will Smith Is Listed As An Executive Producer On Cobra Kai
Image
"Cobra Kai" is the best thing to happen to the "Karate Kid" franchise since we first heard Joe Esposito's "You're the Best" in the 1984 original film. This is a legacy sequel done right, a TV show that understood what made the original films so successful and so beloved (even the nearly universally maligned "Karate Kid Part III"), while also carving its own path and identity. Indeed, the appeal of "Cobra Kai" is that it serves as a fantastic reversal of the original movie, with a new generation taking the place of the original characters, a new karate kid who learns to defend himself before having a brief turn to the dark side, and a struggling mentor who learns to embrace balance.

But it also served as the best possible scenario for a continuation of the original trilogy, catching up not only with Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel Larusso...

Hilary Swank Turned Down Reprising Her ‘Karate Kid’ Role for a ‘Cobra Kai’ Cameo: It Was a ‘Little Disappointing,’ Says Co-Creator
Image
Hilary Swank refused to take a bite out of “Cobra Kai.” The Oscar-winning actress opted not to return to her roots with a cameo in the Netflix series. Swank previously starred in 1994’s “The Next Karate Kid” in the lead role.

Josh Heald, who co-created the “Cobra Kai” series with Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, told Entertainment Weekly they approached Swank about reprising her role of Julie Pierce in the sixth and final season. “We did reach out in the very early days before the season to see if there was a path [for her to appear],” Heald said. “We had an inkling of an idea about how she could come into this story and not have to commit to 10 episodes or something.”

While the “Cobra Kai” team was going to tell Swank the “beginnings of a genesis of an idea,” they did not get a chance to meet with the actress. “She didn...

‘Cobra Kai’ Star Alicia Hannah-Kim Says ‘No One Wants to Be Attacked at Work’ After Martin Kove Biting Incident
Image
“Cobra Kai” star Alicia Hannah-Kim has publicly spoken out about the incident in which her co-star Martin Kove bit her arm at this year’s Washington State Summer Con, telling her supporters, “No one wants to be attacked at work.”

Hannah-Kim filed a police report against the 78-year-old actor, accusing him of biting and bruising her arm. While the two were both at Summer Con, Hannah-Kim alleged that she approached Kove in a VIP area to greet him only for him to grab her arm after she tapped him on the shoulder and bite her so hard he nearly drew blood and cause her to yell out in pain. Afterward, Kove allegedly began kissing the area he had bitten.

The actress chose not to file charges against the actor, but he was subsequently expelled by police from the fan convention.

I also want to express that this does not represent my experience with the show at large. I think everybody can tell that it’s a really good vibe and a great cast.

Cobra Kai Fans React To Mr. Miyagi Spinoff
Image
Netflix’s Cobra Kai might have ended after 6 seasons, but that doesn’t mean the dojo doors are closed for good, especially not when there’s still so much untapped potential in the Karate Kid universe. We’re bound to see Daniel Larusso, Johnny Lawrence and, maybe even, Mr. Miyagi again somewhere down the line. Now, a new poster for a Netflix spin-off based on Mr Miyagi is making the rounds on social media, and fans are super hyped for the origin story. Now, before you get too hyped, let’s clear something up. No, Netflix hasn’t officially greenlit a Mr. Miyagi spinoff. The viral poster doing the rounds is total fan-made fakery. Yet that hasn’t stopped Cobra Kai fans from begging Netflix to make it. And maybe the idea isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds. Just a few weeks ago, actor Shiro Nobunaga revealed on social...

Back in These Good Old Days: 'Legends' or Leftovers?
Image
Still Kicking The recently released 'Karate Kid: Legends' marks the sixth feature film installment in the 'Karate Kid' franchise. But this is by no means the sudden rebirth of a dormant property- it’s the latest chapter in a long, winding saga of reboots, remakes, and reimaginings (oh my!) that has been intermittently simmering for decades. In fact, 'Legends' may say less about the enduring popularity of 'The Karate Kid' itself and more about the broader cultural obsession with nostalgia- and how Hollywood continues to exploit it. The 'Karate Kid' franchise has never truly vanished. After the original trilogy centered on Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio)- ‘The Karate Kid' Parts I (1984), II (1986), and III (1989)- there came 'The Next Karate Kid' in 1994. That film attempted to reinvigorate the formula by introducing a new protagonist, Julie Pierce, played by a young Hilary Swank.

Cobra Kai Bosses Detail Failed Hilary Swank Cameo Bid
Hilary Swank
Netflix’s martial-arts saga Cobra Kai wrapped filming on its sixth and final season in February, but its creators have only now confirmed that they tried—and failed—to secure a cameo from two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank, who played Julie Pierce in 1994’s The Next Karate Kid. Showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg told reporters they reached out before scripting began, hoping to fold Pierce into a brief “one- or two-episode arc” that would mirror Elisabeth Shue’s earlier return as Ali Mills.

Heald later explained that Swank’s representatives “respectfully passed” on even taking a meeting, a response the trio admitted was “a little disappointing”. Swank’s decision was driven partly by the recent birth of her twins and overlapping work on Showtime’s Yellowjackets, leaving her unable to commit to the Vancouver-based shoot.

Absent the cameo, the 15-episode send-off will still unspool in trilogy fashion:...

Ralph Macchio Had One Big Request For Karate Kid: Legends
Image
"Karate Kid: Legends" is a whole lot of movie. More specifically , this "Karate Kid" legacy sequel is two different movies awkwardly stitched together. Directed by John Entwistle, "Legends" serves as a sequel to both the 1984 "The Karate Kid" and the 2010 reboot/remake of the same name starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.

In "Legends," the new "karate kid" is not actually a complete underdog; in fact, he has a lot of experience in kung fu. Ben Wang stars as Li Fong, who moves from the big city to a smaller place, gets a crush on a girl, and makes an enemy out of her violent karate-enthusiast ex-boyfriend. Except, there's more to this movie than that, and that includes a bizarre subplot about Li coaching his new girlfriend's dad to utilize kung fu in a boxing match.

Of course, Li also enters a karate tournament himself because it wouldn't be a "Karate Kid" movie without one.

How Cobra Kai's Creators Wanted Hilary Swank's Julie Pierce To Return
Image
"Cobra Kai" did the two things every legacy sequel needs to do — it effectively rebooted the franchise with a fresh new cast that grew to be as memorable and likable as the original, fitting both the archetypes of the original cast while being new and unique characters. Miguel Díaz (Xolo Maridueña) and Robbie Keane (Tanner Buchanan) started off as sort of reverse Daniel and Johnny, but they ended up becoming so much more in the course of the show.

And yet, the show also managed to be a rather incredible continuation of the original "Karate Kid" trilogy. Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) became a much more nuanced character, a flawed individual with insecurities and who grows over time, while Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) turned from a simplistic antagonist, a teen bully, into a complex three-dimensional character who made mistakes and tries to be better slowly. Indeed, "Cobra Kai" shone when it came to reintroducing villains,...

Not only was he removed from the convention because he violently bit co-star Alicia Hannah-Kim. Kove was accused of sexual misconduct in the past, but the investigation did not have an official resolution.

Martin Kove Accused Of Sexual Harassment In 2024 On ‘Cobra Kai’ Set; Sony Investigated, Actor Says “It Wasn’t True Then & It Isn’t True Now”
Image
Exclusive: Cobra Kai and Karate Kid actor Martin Kove’s bite attack on a co-star at a recent fan convention wasn’t the first time he has been accused of misconduct, it turns out — though the actor denies anything inappropriate ever occurred.

An incident last year on the Atlanta set of Cobra Kai’s final season led to an investigation by series producer Sony Pictures Television over Kove’s behavior, I’ve learned.

Specifically, the probe emerged from an April 2024 sexual harassment complaint against Kove from an extra on the Netflix series created by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald.

While the matter did not involve physical contact from Kove, it was said to be “leering” and verbally overt enough that the actress went to the studio with her concerns about the septuagenarian actor and how uncomfortable he made her. Sony conducted an initial review of the allegations on...
