Julian Schnabel’s In the Hand of Dante premiered out of competition at the Venice Film Festival to a warm reception, drawing an ovation that trade tallies placed between eight and nine-and-a-half minutes.
The 153-minute drama stars Oscar Isaac in a dual turn as both novelist Nick Tosches and Dante Alighieri, intercutting a contemporary criminal caper around a purported autograph manuscript of “The Divine Comedy” with scenes from the poet’s life. Festival materials describe a story that moves between centuries as Tosches, enlisted by a mafia figure, pursues authentication with the help of a volatile fixer named Louie.

Julian Schnabel‘s long-gestating offbeat period drama In the Hand of Dante has finally met an audience. The Oscar Isaac-starring film received an enthusiastic welcome at its world premiere in Venice Wednesday night, drawing an eight-minute standing ovation. Having traded his signature smocks and fedora for a black tuxedo and shiny Oxfords, Schnabel bowed gallantly to the crowd and embraced Isaac and his cast throughout the ovation. Supporting star Jason Momoa walked the red carpet in a striking pink suit prior to the screening but snuck out with his entourage before the film played. Momoa and Isaac last walked the Venice carpet together for the world premiere of Dune: Part I in 2021.
In the Hand of Dante is adapted from Nick Tosches’ 2002 novel of the same name, with Schnabel and his wife Louise Kugelberg collaborating on the screenplay. Isaac stars as both the middle ages poet Dante Alighieri and modern-day author Nick Tosches,...

Oscar Isaac scored his second Venice ovation in five days as Julian Schnabel’s literary epic “In the Hand of Dante” premiered to eight minutes of applause on Wednesday night. Isaac also leads Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” which debuted on the Lido Saturday to a rapturous 13-minute reception.
As the credits rolled on “In the Hand of Dante,” in which Isaac plays both the 14th-century poet Dante Alighieri and 21st-century author Nick Tosches, the actor embraced his director and waved to a crowd of adoring fans.
Earlier on the red carpet, Isaac posed for photos with co-star Jason Momoa, who wore a baby pink suit with matching Birkenstocks. Though Momoa walked into Venice’s Sala Grande with his director and cast — including Louis Cancelmi, Franco Nero and Benjamin Clementine — the actor soon made an exit before the film started and was not present for the ovation. Any film festival worth its salt will program a movie or two that’s more rooted in delirium than common sense. If you had to choose the wildest, loopiest big swing of a movie to play at the Venice Film Festival this year, it would likely come down to two choices: “The Testament of Ann Lee,” Mona Fastvold’s 18th-century cult Shaker musical (imagine “The Crucible” set in a “Handmaid’s Tale” world where the women are their own puritan oppressors), and “In the Hand of Dante,” Julian Schnabel’s impossible-to-pigeonhole literary gangster mystery, which might be described as “The Da Vinci Code” retold as a violent underworld fairy tale with 14th-century footnotes. But “The Testament of Ann Lee” is a forbiddingly austere slow-motion ramble. “In the Hand of Dante,” by contrast, is a folly that pulsates with life. Even when it doesn’t add up, it’s the kind...

Every arthouse filmmaker with staggering ambition gets their “Heaven’s Gate,” their “Southland Tales,” their, yes, “Megalopolis,” a movie so boundlessly overachieving that it winds up alienating audiences and, in the worst of cases, derailing their careers.
While I’m not about to declare painter and filmmaker Julian Schnabel’s career as jettisoned to artistic purgatorio, especially after the radiance and wonder of artist-driven portraits like “Basquiat” and “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” and pieces of “At Eternity’s Gate,” his decade-in-the-kiln “In the Hand of Dante,” which itself spans seven hundred years from 14th-century Florence to almost-present-day Venice and New York, is epically miscalculated despite sequences and stretches of grandeur.
This gargantuan shrine to Dante Alighieri, his “Divine Comedy,” and somehow the gangster movie genre, makes a huge misstep in trying to depict in period detail the life and times of Alighieri in the 1300s in chintzily costumed fashion — giving...

It was a bit surprising when Julian Schnabel, who became famous for art made of broken dishes, turned into a filmmaker whose works have such a strong, conventional narrative pull. But after films such as The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and most recently the lovely biographical take on Van Gogh, At Eternity’s Gate, it’s less surprising that his ambitious, captivating and sometimes misfiring extravaganza In the Hand of Dante works much better in the straightforward parts set in the 21st century than in the raggedy, philosophical sections set in the 14th century.
The two parallel stories, both driven by Dante’s Divine Comedy, weave in and out through the film, with the 21st century in black and white and the 14th in color. It is also a film of dual roles, often with actors as characters in both centuries, echoing each other and possibly playing the earlier characters’ reincarnations.

Well, at least it’s pretty to look at.
Julian Schnabel’s pretentious new opus “In the Hand of Dante” stars Oscar Isaac as real-life journalist, novelist and poet Nick Tosches, who gets sucked into a criminal conspiracy to steal a manuscript of “The Divine Comedy,” allegedly written in Dante Alighieri’s own handwriting. In flashbacks, Isaac also plays Dante himself, who struggles to complete his epic trilogy while coming to terms with his exile, his spiritual failings and his loveless marriage. Lots of people get killed. Lots of navels also get gazed.
Tosches wrote the novel “In the Hand of Dante” himself, and Schnabel’s film treats that source material like brazen self-insert fan-fiction.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has reached the Venice Film Festival this year in various ways, from protests to Wednesday night’s world premiere of The Voice of Hind Rajab. It also came up on Wednesday during this afternoon’s press conference for The Hand of Dante when veteran artist and auteur Julian Schnabel declined to address the war directly while dismissing calls that his actors should face a boycott here or anywhere.
“There’s no reason to boycott artists,” Schnabel said flatly. “I selected those actors for their merits as actors and they did an extraordinary job in the film. That’s about it. As far as [the conflict in Gaza], I think we should talk about the movie, rather than this issue.”
Schnabel’s comments come on the heels of a pro-Palestinian group requesting that invitations for Israeli star Gal Gadot and Gerard Butler be rescinded from the festival. Prior to Gadot’s career as an actress,...

After making movies about artists from different eras, including “Basquiat” and Van Gogh biopic “At Eternity’s Gate,” Julian Schnabel criss-crosses between the 14th and 21st centuries in his wildly inventive new film “In the Hand of Dante.” The drama, which premieres out of competition at Venice Film Festival on Sept. 3, follows the parallel lives of two artists who turn out to be the same person.
Schnabel’s long-gestating work is based on the eponymous book by Nick Tosches, which blends crime with literary intrigue and stems from the author’s unbounded passion for Dante Alighieri. “Hand of Dante” follows the life of a character based on Tosches, who comes from a family of New Jersey gangsters. When a handwritten manuscript of Dante’s poem “The Divine Comedy” is found in the Vatican library and makes its way from a priest to a mob boss in New York City, Tosches is asked to verify its authenticity.

The Venice Film Festival has no official market — no Marche du Film, no European Film Market — meaning the deals on the Lido tend to happen quietly, in hotel suites at the Excelsior and over spritzes along the Lungomare. But sellers still see the festival as a prime launchpad, using it to float prestige projects to the right buyers, banking on critical heat to position art house titles that could otherwise vanish in a crowded marketplace.
“It’s a different kind of hustle,” says one veteran European sales agent. “You’re not going to Venice to presell a title and close out your financing in a week. But for the right finished film, it can be the place that generates that first wave of buzz and gets buyers excited so you can close deals in Toronto and beyond.”

Every awards season, movie fans and aspiring pundits across the country become obsessed with the ever-coveted Academy Awards. The longstanding awards show has long been considered the holy grail of the film industry and can often feel like an all-encompassing part of the discourse, particularly around the four acting categories. In the lead-up to Oscar Sunday, many of us debate who will win, and once the ceremony comes and goes, there are still debates over who should have won.
Amidst this hubbub, it's important to remember that the Oscars are but a modicum of what represents the best performances in film. In fact, several of the best actors working today have never been given the honor of an Oscar despite years of treasured performances. The disparity between what Oscar voters love and what history remembers has always been a widening gap, but we can guarantee these 15 omissions from the winner's circle are particularly egregious.

Willem Dafoe reveals that he had one of the best filming experiences working on Martin Scorsese's controversial Oscar-nominated movie. The star, who is famous for playing villainous characters, including the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and Donald Kimball in American Psycho, is often considered one of the best actors working today. His wide-ranging career has led to him being nominated for four Oscars, with his most recent nomination coming in 2019 for At Eternity's Gate.
Dafoe recently played a vampire hunter in Robert Eggers' Nosferatu, which has become a critical and financial success since releasing in theaters in December. Aside from Nosferatu, the actor had two other films out in 2024: Yorgos Lanthimos' Kinds of Kindness with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, where he played deceased detective Wolf Jackson. His next movie, The Legend of Ochi, is scheduled to come out in 2025, but his...

In the realm of music biopics, one simply doesn't get bigger than "Bohemian Rhapsody." Frankly, it's not even close. The film about the story of the band Queen, focused largely on the late lead singer Freddie Mercury, is one of the biggest movies ever made that isn't part of a major franchise. Taking in $910 million at the global box office, it became a straight-up sensation, going on to win several Oscars. Chief amongst them was Rami Malek, who took home Best Actor for his work as Mercury.
To say that Mr. Mercury is a legend would be an understatement. Embodying that sort of distinct personality is no easy task. While the film itself, which is credited to director Bryan Singer even though he was fired from the production late in the game, is largely a mixed bag for many critics and viewers, the general consensus is that Malek was indeed outstanding as Mercury.

Nosferatu star Willem Dafoe is reflecting on his own Count Orlok performance from the 2000 movie Shadow of the Vampire. The upcoming remake, directed by Robert Eggers, who collaborated with Dafoe on The Lighthouse and The Northman, depicts a nightmarish encounter with the eponymous vampire. In the film, Dafoe portrays Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, a source of authority regarding Count Orlok. However, the Nosferatu star famously played a version of this mysterious Transylvanian monster in E. Elias Merhige’s Oscar-nominated Shadow of the Vampire, an imaginary tale of Max Schreck (Dafoe) during the original Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, ahead of the Nosferatu premiere, Dafoe looked back on his Count Orlok portrayal. He expressed a fondness for Shadow of the Vampire and explained how makeup can impact a performance by allowing an actor to see themselves in character. Read some of his comments below:

Niels Arestrup, the French-Danish actor and muse to Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard who appeared in international features including Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and Julian Schnabel’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, has died. He was 75.
Arestrup’s wife, Isabelle Le Nouvel, confirmed his death to Agence France-Presse on Sunday, saying he died “at the end of a courageous fight against illness.”
Arestrup will forever be linked to Audiard and his performances in the filmmaker’s The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005) — playing the criminal father to Romain Duris’ would-be concert pianist — and A Prophet (2009), in which he embodies a terrifying Corsican mob boss who runs his operation from within prison.
Arestrup won best supporting acting César awards, France’s equivalent of the Oscar, for both roles, and the performances solidified his image as an onscreen villain with a piercing blue gaze who is barely holding back the violence within.

The career trajectory of character actor extraordinaire Willem Dafoe is one of the more unusual among contemporary Hollywood stars. From his early days of being routinely cast as a heavy, Dafoe worked his way through the system thanks to the sheer force of his talent, finally being cast as leads, often portraying in detail such real-life figures as actor Max Schreck, artist Vincent Van Gogh and even Jesus Christ.
Among Dafoe’s early bad guy roles were as biker gang leaders in both Kathryn Bigelow‘s “The Loveless” and Walter Hill‘s “Streets of Fire.” But his performance as kindly Sgt. Elias in Oliver Stone‘s “Platoon” changed all that, resulting in his first Academy Award nomination. Three more Oscar nominations followed, and Dafoe has also earned three Golden Globe nominations and four noms from the Screen Actors Guild.

Beetlejuice is back! Oscar-nominated, singular creative visionary Tim Burton and Oscar nominee and star Michael Keaton reunite for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to Burton’s award winning Beetlejuice.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was the opening film at this year’s Venice Film Festival and the sequel had a four minute standing ovation.
“There are so few opportunities to be in something that you can say is 100% original and unique,” said Keaton, who joked about his character’s evolution.
“I think my character has matured,” Keaton said. “As suave and sensitive as he was in the first, I think he’s even more so in this one.”
The early reviews are raving about the movie.
Deadline writes: “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is not clunky. Yes, there are plenty of animation joins that haven’t been smoothed over by CGI. Some of the props look like tat Burton bought in a flea market. But it also has a proper plot,...

In what is shaping up to be a rather thin awards season, could a small but formidable film, written and directed by a filmmaker with three Oscar winners in his family, find its way into contention?
That’s what Falling Forward Films is betting on in acquiring the U.S. distribution rights for Jack Huston’s impressive directorial debut Day of the Fight, a black-and-white indie about a once-renowned boxer — played by Huston’s former Boardwalk Empire costar Michael C. Pitt — as he takes a redemptive journey through his past and present on the day of his first fight since he was released from prison.
Indeed, the upstart distributor has already begun mounting an awards campaign for the film, which also stars Nicolette Robinson, Ron Perlman, John Magaro, Anatol Yusef, Steve Buscemi (another Boardwalk Empire alum) and — coming out of retirement to make a brief but shattering appearance — Oscar winner Joe Pesci.

Willem Dafoe becomes one of Robert Eggers' most frequent collaborators after starring in three of his movies: The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu. Ralph Ineson also appears in three Eggers films, The Witch, The Northman, and Nosferatu, making him another pivotal collaborator. Anya Taylor-Joy could have joined Dafoe and Ineson as a top collaborator but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.
Upon starring in an upcoming 2024 horror movie, Willem Dafoe will officially join an exclusive group of actors that might have also included Anya Taylor-Joy if it wasn't for unfortunate scheduling conflicts. In the last few years, Willem Dafoe's best performances have included Thomas Wake in The Lighthouse and Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Most recently, Dafoe has graced the big screen as the quirky scientist, Dr. Godwin Baxter, in Poor Things. Yet, Dafoe has had a long career, so it's no surprise that he recently earned a very elite label.

Will there be some sort of resurrection, I wondered. “I don’t know how they’re going to do it. They have an idea. I haven’t heard it yet but it’s in [my diary] and I’m going to hear about it pretty soon,...

Heatseeking filmmaker Olmo Schnabel has signed for representation with WME, and with Black Bear for management.
Schnabel’s breakout directorial effort “Pet Shop Days” played both the Venice International Film Festival and SXSW this cycle, scoring distribution from Utopia for a 2024 theatrical release. Starring Jack Irv, Darío Yazbek Bernal, Willem Dafoe and Peter Sarsgaard, the film tells of a drug lord scion on the run from his powerful family. Slumming it in New York in a haze of sex and drugs, he seduces an equally lost young man and pulls him into the city’s underbelly.
The provocative debut also hit festivals in Chicago, Montclair, Morelia, Santa Barbara and Sarasota. Schnabel was also awarded the Leffest Lisboa Film Festival’s Tap Revelation Award.

Franchise animation Kung Fu Panda 4 and creature clash Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire lead a bumper weekend of 16 new films at the UK-Ireland box office.
Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 has the biggest opening of the weekend in 715 sites – a significant jump for the series, after 2008’s Kung Fu Panda (448) and sequels in 2011 (514) and 2016 (585), all through Paramount.
Conversely, the total grosses of each film have dropped, with the first title making £20.4m, followed by £17m and £14.2m for the sequels. All of these were pre-pandemic; number four will look to cross the £10m mark before challenging any of those totals.

Not every good film is necessarily a good time, and vice versa. On the latter front, see “Mothers’ Instinct,” a 1960s-set suburban psychodrama too silly to secure our belief and too reserved to pass muster as go-for-broke camp — but still compulsive enough, twisty enough and finally berserk enough to keep us hooked through all its tonal and narrative lane-changing. As a pair of model homemakers and next-door neighbors whose close friendship is severely undone by sudden tragedy, even stars Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain don’t always seem to be making entirely the same movie: Hathaway’s sly, high-gloss vamping points to a more brittly amusing one than Chastain’s earnest emotional commitment, turning their characters’ escalating picket-fence battle into a compelling tussle for the soul of the script itself. One wins, and not predictably so.
