Who knew Vince Vaugh could pull this off?...

Wow! That pretty much summarizes this entire movie.

This movie was quite an unexpecting surprise. And I dare say that this was without a doubt the best movie that I have seen Vince Vaughn in, and he was just phenomenal in this role.

The storyline in "Brawl in Cell Block 99" was quite good, and it grabbed my interest from the very beginning. The movie didn't let go until the very end, so you will be entertained from start till end.

There was a good flow to the storyline, which really helped to speed the movie along and make for a good, wholeheartedly movie experience.

They had a great ensemble of cast, which included Don Johnson and Udo Kier as well, aside from Vince Vaughn.

The special effects in "Brawl in Cell Block 99" were adequate, but the prosthetics especially the faces were horribly fake. And it was painstakingly clear that it was prosthetics being used. But luckily, this is the type of movie that is not overly dependent on having bedazzling special effects to function as an entertaining movie.

The ending, however, was sort of a slap in the face, to be blunt - pardon the pun. But, a good and entertaining movie movie nonetheless.

Good Lord, This Is A Rough Movie To Watch

First of all, if you are squeamish (even a little) DO NOT watch this movie. But if you've got the stomach for an extremely violent (and sometimes depressing) movie this might be worth your time.

Vince Vaughn does an excellent job. In fact, the acting in the whole movie is surprisingly good for a grindhouse-style flick. This is about a man in a bad, bad position, who bad things happen to, and who in turn does some very bad things. But if you can handle this type of movie you will be entertained.

The action is gritty to the point of being potentially sickening. I was disturbed, and yet I wish more movies took this approach to action. The fight scenes are not comic bookish like so many movies, rather they are brutal and somehow realistic. Honestly they were the best thing about this movie.

Don't expect a brawl in the sense that a whole cell block starts fighting riot style. This is more of a Bronson-esque "one man out for revenge" style of movie.

The only negative I noticed is that there were a few unbelievable parts regarding the prison system, but they were needed to drive the plot along in the direction it went. Viewers should really just suppress their disbelief (and gag reflexes) and just strap themselves in for the ride.

Recommended for anyone that can handle the darkness and appreciate the brutally gritty craziness that is this movie.

Vince Vaughn Hardcore!

I was pretty much blown away by "Brawl in cell block 99". I was a big fan of S.Craig Zahler who Directed the film Bone Tomahawk. This film is better in many ways. I'm hooked on his genius.

To say the film is violent is an understatement but nothing any hardcore thriller/Horror fan hasn't seen before. This film delivers the violence, however, with a purpose and is almost just given the narrative. Zahler turns the protagonist into an antihero. With superb zeal.

I am a fan of Vince Vaughn and this film is a testament to his terrific range and ability as a great American actor. In fact, I think it's his finest performance to date. In the spirit of not divulging any spoilers, I will just give potential viewers my opinion of the film as a whole.

Supporting cast of Don Johnson, Udo Kier and Jennifer Carpenter are outstanding! Direction was phenomenal as it guides the viewer through the story line with such ease, in a hard to tell plot.

Nothing is gratuitous or overdone. It's simply a great story with simple plot, done in a purposeful way. For a film with 132 mins.runtime it goes very quickly. A testament to a great movie.

I have become a huge fans of S. Craig Zahler and can't wait to see his next film.

Fans of violent Thrillera told in a relevant way with great dialog, do not miss this film!!

Once again..,Bravo Vince Vaughn for a spectacular performance! It's hard to believe, after seeing this film, he spent most of his career in comedic roles.

Bold & Brutal!

1. Bone Tomahawk

2. Dragged Across Concrete

3. Brawl in Cell Block 99

But as my rating suggests I think it's pretty great, and just like the other two I will watch this one again.

I was afraid I wasn't gonna be able to take Vince Vaughn seriously in this type of role but I did. I certainly took him a lot more seriously than I did in the second season of True Detective. I personally like his performance in Dragged Across Concrete more but he was still really good in this. And I never thought I would find him intimidating.

Also, casting Don Johnson as the sadistic warden was genius!

And now I want to check out more grindhouse movies!

Who says there is no such thing as time travel....?

Because writer/director Zahler has taken his audience back to an era when films were simpler, direct, and, above all, unrelenting in their pursuit of a single theme or idea.

He has manufactured a true guilty pleasure -- a film about a man making bad choices that is driven by brilliant characterizations, raw Adrenalin, and a compelling narrative that makes you watch no matter how much you know you should look away.

In the grand tradition of Charles Bronson and Clint Eastwood, Vaughn, an actor once relegated to romantic comedies, does "the" physical role of his career and it is a barn burner.

There is no pretense at class. This is 1960s grindhouse from start to finish and if you have any doubts just listen to the closing music at the 2:05 mark --- a brisk orchestral piece that sounds more fitting to a vaudeville act than a melodrama. Zahler ends the show by signalling that he was messing with your head, overloading your senses, all along -- and moreover he was doing it deliberately and knowingly.

Don Johnson, an actor who continues to win SEXIEST MAN ALIVE awards for merely showing up at the ceremony, wanted to try something different and succeeded - his cigar-smoking, sadistic warden is a masterpiece. Unforgettable.

A hard film to review, a difficult film to classify, and an impossible film to ignore. The closest analog in this era would be the highly stylized, and highly violent, films from South Korea that glorify the individual over the system.

Highly recommended.

More frightful than most horror movies. A very surrealistic, brutal n engrossing movie.

I saw this for the first time recently. This movie was on my radar for a long time.

Having enjoyed S. Craig Zahler's Bone Tomahawk, Asylum Blackout n Dragged Across Street, i had huge expectations n this movie went beyond my expectations.

This movie is very engrossing n shockingly brutal.

This one has some witty dialogues n some humor.

Vince Vaughn gave a terrific performance n his character is amazeballs.

"Pretend like u r talking to god".

"He doesn't smell like nachos".

BRAWL = WTF! Give me MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me allay any fears this movie is lame, as stated by a couple reviewers here. Their opinions here are extremely inaccurate. With that being said....

Vince Vaughn is a shining star in this brutally violent, perfectly paced story, with a descent into a hell only his character can navigate. The movie is rare in that it's not slow, boring or overdone. Each piece is compartmentalized on purpose, to guide the audience to the climax. There isn't a big list of elite A list actors, huge musical score, tons of CGI, no. What you have here is director's genius, visualizing the journey from A-Z in a way that will captivate you. You will not want the movie to end.

I do think this is a turning point for Vaughn, as I only usually see him in romantic movies or comedies. He's truly found his spirit here and I hope it leads him to similar roles. He plays it in a way you've never seen him. Try to imagine Tom Hanks playing a man without a care. It's that hard to wrap your head around.

Don Johnson shines as a degenerate warden and the small cast of characters scattered throughout the movie play key roles in the makeup of the plot; all done to perfection.

Trust me y'all, you DON'T want to miss this one, it will have you begging more for more, guaranteed! So much face smashing destruction is actually a delight. I will not spoil a single thing, go see it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where were you all my life Craig Zahler?

Why was this movie in my watchlist for so long, shame on me. This film was my introduction to this director/writer, and I love his style.

This is a violent movie, but with a lot of personality and humour along the way. Vince Vaughn does a great job portraying a sociopath pushed into an impossible situation.

The pacing, the structure of the story, the dialog, the action, all superb. This movie is a journey all right, and an expertly shot one at that.

Absolutely brutal, b-movie-grit action/revenge flick

Hits hard like "The Boys Next Door" meets "Walking Tall". The film is extremely unrealistic(in many ways), but Vaughn is solid. He sells this character. The fight scenes are choreographed quite well, and are far more realistic than the settings and timeline. It's a real strength for the film. You feel every punch and Vaughns strength really manifests itself on the screen. Kudo's to the director/choreographers. Plenty of action throughout - also enough playful sarcasm to keep it from being too heavy handed.

Put your brain on hold and just watch Vince kick some butt. Have yourself a cigar, a beer, and don't read too much into it.

Budget constraints are probably the main cause of the films' shortcomings, so I'm not docking-it too much for that. I don't want to raise expectations too high, but if its just the action/revenge junkies that like it 7/10 like me -I understand. Skull-crushing madness. Hard R!!!! The filmmakers must've gone through an "albeit different" hell(as the main character) getting this an R rating. Id say Id love to see an unrated version, but really, this was plenty. Nice to see Vince in a better non-comedic leading role. He still didn't get enough backstory/wife-time. A little more background dialog, along with shaping up some sets, and this could've been interplanetary B greatness.. as it is.. also slightly underwritten and a little unpolished.. 7/10.. guilty pleasure niche flick..

This is gonna go cult-status among some action fans, gore fans, and in particular, revenge fans.

Vaughn's size sells every superhero aspect. Almost a little m.night "unbreakable vibe" too, only nowhere near as good camera-work, or story. I assume many of those faults will be excused because the film knows exactly what it is, unabashed and prideful B-actioner with at least a smidgen of heart to keep it together.

Better than most films of this guild. I dig the "what makes a man tough" thing.. that works here.. Tough guys are born of harsh histories and fearlessness... that aspect is realistic. My marginal recommendation is turned high if u fit the bill for this type of thing. Better than Stallone's "Lock-Up" or "Escape" - Not by much though - 69 out of 100.. Most of the "you'll like this if you liked" films mentioned in the description, but add-on 2008's "Escapist" and the same years' "Felon", both a touch better. For 1.50/nt at the redbox, it's a worthwhile view, but absolutely NOT for kids(or even teens?), and seriously consider whether you wanna invite the wife. Hardcore B-Movie.

BRUTAL.

How on earth did this get such high praise?

I watched this movie constantly repeating that question to myself, I can't believe i was fooled by a reviewer here that actually stated this was the best movie They'd seen all year. There are scenes that are so bad i couldn't tell if they've intentionally been put in there for comedic effect or they were intended to be serious. One such scene is when the main character Bradley (played by Vaughn) dives into a body of water only to re emerge seconds later bone dry. It was honestly like an amateur teenager had directed it and spent the entire budget on Vaughn's fee. By the end they couldn't even be bothered to use any special effects and opted to use crash test dummies. It takes more than shocking violence to make a movie, i've seen it being compared to a Tarantino flick but at least his movies have substance and great quotable dialogue. Fans of B-movies may enjoy but for me it was so bad it became comical.

A strong and violent film about former boxer that loses his job and becomes drug smuggler resulting in fateful consequences.

Bradley Thomas's (Vince Vaughn) life is falling apart: his marriage to Lauren Thomas (Jennifer Carpenter) is hanging by a thread and he has been fired from his job as a car mechanic. His only option to get his life back on track is to work as a drug dealer for an old friend (Marc Blucas). At first, this decision improves his life in several ways, however his dangerous way of life will soon have harsh consequences. Series of events land him in prison and he is given ultimatum to right his wrong decisions all aspects of what he decide have their consequences only he can choose what he thinks is right or wrong and try to avenge his wrong choices. You never know what might be lurking in the next dark corner !.

A year after the release of his successful first film: ¨Bone Tomahawk¨, S. Craig Zahler writes and directs this powerful, violent and frenetic prison drama that combines melancholy, marital love and the protagonist's sense of responsibility with shocking scenes of fights, blood and broken bones. The picture turns out to be an exhilarating experience with many memorable, as well as disturbing, loathing sequences , including a really shocking finale .

American actor Vince Vaugh plays Bradley Thomas, a decent and patriotic man who is forced to immerse himself in the world of crime and drug trafficking to support his pregnant wife -well played by Jennifer Carpenter-. In the film, one of his drug smuggling jobs goes wrong, and a shootout ensues between his accomplices and the police that ends with Bradley in prison. Along with them, Don Johnson as the Chief prison warden, Marc Blucas, Udo Kier, Clark Johnson, Dion Mucciacito, Willie C. Carpenter, among others, complete the cast of this feature film.

The motion picture was compellingly written and directed by S. Craig Zahler. Craig is a western expert , in fact he is the author of the western novel A Congregation of Jackals, which was nominated for both major western writing awards, The Spur and The Peacemaker. And his dark western script The Brigands of Rattleborge won the #1 top position on the Black List for best unproduced screenplay. Zahler is a prestigious writer, such as The Incident, Puppet Master : The Littlest Reich , Dragged Across Concrete , Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Bone Tomahawk. His films usually begin grounded in the real-world and slowly transform into surrealistic tales with hyper-stylized depictions of violence. Often works with Don Johnson, Udo Kier, Jennifer Carpenter, Fred Melamed, and Vince Vaughn ; per Johnson, the group refer to themselves as "The Zahler Players". And he has directed some nice films such as Dragged Across Concrete (2018) , Tomahawk (2015) and Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017). Rating : 6.5/10 . Worthwhile watching for Vince Vaughn fans. The unusual subject and offbeat very violent and gory scenes making this a recipe not for all tastes.

S. Craig Zahler is 2/2

S. Craig Zahler is proving himself to be a director worth paying attention to. I became a fan after seeing Bone Tomahawk, and have read several of his novels including Mean Business on North Ganson Street and Wraiths of the Broken Land. Also, his incredible un-produced screenplay The Brigands of Rattleborge.

BRAWL is very similar to Bone Tomahawk in terms of pacing, story structure and tone. A slow descent into a hellish situation.

I don't agree with people who say he is a "second-rate Tarantino." Tarantino does homage. Even Robert Rodriguez, in his attempts to do exploitation films, call too much attention to themselves and end up bordering on spoof, whereas BRAWL just simply is an exploitation film.

Perhaps some of Zahler's dialogue works better on the page than spoken, but I still think he is a great writer.

The low-key style of the film, with the every-man type of character Vaughn plays who gets mixed up in a serious situation makes this movie seem like a combination of Nicolas Winding Refn's PUSHER II and Cassavettes' KILLING OF A Chinese BOOKIE.

There are even some subtle hints of ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13.

My only real gripes are that some of the dialogue exchanges are kind of stilted, and the staging of characters in some scenes seems too stiff and unnatural.

I like that the themes, such as privatization of prisons, are beneath the surface and not drilled into the audiences' head.

Its not a perfect movie, I hope Zahler continues to branch out but its a cool throwback movie that isn't trying to play it safe or cater to a wide audience and knows what type of movie it wants to be.

This is a one of a kind movie.

The amount of times I didn't know what would happen. What choices the characters would make, what tragedies would occur. It wasn't readable at all.

And through this chaotic beautiful journey of a movie. These questions occurred constantly. I was constantly asking what would happen next. And even when it felt like I knew what would happen, I would question how, and what events would transpire.

Beautiful movie. I probably won't re-watch it for a while, unless I can share it with someone that hasn't seen it yet.

I kinda want to give it an 8/10 because it's not perfect, but we don't live in a perfect reality, and this movie IMO deserves higher than its current average rating.

Slow movie picks up speed like a freight train and the punches come in the same way

Incredibly violent movie that you wouldn't want your kids watching until they turn 30. Having said that - this is a gripping prison yarn with Vince Vaughan coming out of the comedy movies to give a great "serious actor" performance. He's done it before in the early days but this is something different again.

So this is no Shawshank but what it lacks in good characters, and story line, it makes up for in the shear horror of circumstance. Yes - worse than Shawshank! This movie is almost in the horror genre - in fact if you loved Vince in Wedding Crashers but hated Hostel, this movie is not for you...don't even think of watching it.

Vince Vaughn getting back to his comedic roots

When I saw Vaughn's shaved head and cross tattoo on the back of it that looks like he drew on himself, I burst out laughing and looked forward to his hilarity shining through. He did not disappoint. Him playing a redneck tough guy had me in stitches. The funniest aspect was when he would speak in a southern drawl in one scene, then switch to a midwestern accent in the next. Pure comedic genius. Too bad this wasn't a comedy because I laughed 99 times!
