Could Timothy Olyphant be Star Wars' best hope for future awards seasons?
Image
Many fans were angered by the fact that none of the main actors from Andor were recognized by the Television Academy for their work when this year's Emmy nomations were released; only Forest Whitaker receive a nomination for the second season.

Whitaker received a nomination for his guest work on the series. Another actor received a nomination a few years back in the same category. As the Emmys are approaching it is important to look back at his work and nomination.

Timothy Olyphant was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2021 for his season 2 appearance in the Mandalorian. His was nominated for appearing in the episode, the Marshall. It was the second episode of the season.

It was a worthy performance of a nomination. Olyphant brought a lot of humor and high stakes to the role of Cobb Vanth, the Marshall of Mos Espa, who Din Djarin...

Chadwick Boseman's 'Gods of Egypt' Surges on Streaming Charts
Image
While Chadwick Boseman is remembered by fans for his brilliant portrayal of King T’Challa in Marvel Studios’ Black Panther, the actor left behind numerous movies that are worth watching. Before he stepped into the suit, he did films like 42, Marshall, and more that shine a light on important historical figures, and he always played well in an ensemble cast. One of his movies is now quietly climbing the streaming charts.

2016's Gods of Egypt has broken out on the Netflix streaming charts days after it landed on the platform. At the time of writing, the movie is sitting at #9 on the charts and could see a spike in the coming days. This is big for the movie as it was discarded at the box office when it first came to theaters 9 years ago.

What Is 'Gods of Egypt' About?

Directed by Alex Proyas, the mind behind...

Angry Blonde: Eminem’s ‘The Marshall Mathers LP’ at 25
Image
“You see, I’m just Marshall Mathers/I’m just a regular guy, I don’t know why all the fuss about me/Nobody ever gave a fuck before, all they did was doubt me/Now everybody wanna run they mouth and try to take shots at me.” These lines, which make up the chorus of “Marshall Mathers,” sung by Marshall Mathers on the 11th track of The Marshall Mathers LP, serve as the key to understanding the album. It’s the song that perfectly encapsulates its overall ethos. Marshall Mathers is just a normal guy—or at least he thinks so. All the hubbub surrounding him baffles him. These people never cared about him before, but now, for some reason, they do. How dare they.

This anger proves any critique wrong, perceived by the rapper as righteous throughout The Marshall Mathers LP. It drips off every carefully lobbed insult,...

Diane Warren Remains Resilient After 16th Oscar Loss for Best Original Song: ‘I’ll Be Back’
Image
Diane Warren was denied an Oscar for the 16th time Sunday, after losing in the Best Original Song category to Emilia Pérez‘s “El Mal.” Warren, who was nominated for The Six Triple Eight‘s “The Journey,” wasn’t deterred by the loss, she told Variety. “I’m consistent as fuck,” Warren said. “You know, it is what it is. I’m happy to be here.”

Warren said she believed she had a fair chance at the 97th Oscars. H.E.R., an Oscar-winning artist, performed “The Journey,” and the Netflix-distributed...

‘Emilia Pérez’ wins Oscar for Best Original Song, blocking Diane Warren for the 16th time
Image
The Oscar winner for Best Original Song, as predicted by Gold Derby's odds, was "El Mal" from Emilia Pérez. It was written by Camille and Clément Ducol, who also composed the film's score, and the film's director, Jacques Audiard. It's the first Oscar win for all three songwriters. Unfortunately, that meant a 16th loss for Diane Warren, who was nominated for penning "The Journey" from The Six Triple Eight and to date still hasn't won a competitive Oscar.

This year's Oscar race started at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards last fall, and it was a good night for Emilia Pérez, which won Best Music Themed Film, Biopic, or Musical; Best Song — Onscreen Performance (for Zoe Saldaña singing "El Mal"); and Best Score — Feature Film. However, "El Mal" didn't win Best Song - Feature Film. That was Warren for "The Journey," while "Never Too Late" was named the best song from a documentary.

The late Chadwick Boseman is largely known for portraying Black Panther in the MCU, but he also lit up the big screen embodying titanic figures in American history. From James Brown in Get On Up to Thurgood Marshall in Marshall, Boseman gave new life to the important stories of trailblazers and, in turn, cemented himself as one of Hollywood's best and brightest with an Oscar nomination and a bevy of other accolades. Before becoming a household name though, he first took on a defining role as a game-changer in the realm of baseball, sports, and society as a whole — Jackie Robinson. Now, 42 is coming to Max on February 1 just in time for a rewatch before MLB Spring Training begins.

Diane Warren has a 16th chance to score that elusive Oscar
Image
With her nomination this year for “The Journey” from the Netflix historical drama The Six Triple Eight, Diane Warren has now contended 16 times at the Oscars, including the last eight years in a row, for Best Original Song. But the veteran artist — who has a Grammy, an Emmy, and two Golden Globes in her trophy case — has yet to score a competitive Oscar. Could this be her year?

Warren does, however, have an Honorary Oscar, which she collected in 2022 for her impressive body of work. That made her the first and currently only songwriter to receive that recognition from the Motion Picture Academy.

Her 15 previous nominations are as follows:

“Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” from Mannequin (1987)

Lost to: “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing

‘Little Prince’ Chinese Adaptation in the Works From Stars Collective, Shanghai’s El Pajaro (Exclusive)
Image
In a major push into animation, media tech investment firm Stars Collective is partnering with Shanghai-based El Pajaro Pictures to develop, produce and distribute a fresh take on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved classic “The Little Prince.”

“The Little Prince” weaves a poetic tale of a young prince who travels from planet to planet, meeting eccentric characters that offer allegorical insights into human nature. Narrated by a stranded aviator, the story unfolds as the prince recounts his adventures and his quest to understand life’s deeper truths.

The novella has inspired several adaptations. The 1974 live-action musical, directed by Stanley Donen, captured its whimsy, while Mark Osborne’s 2015 animated feature blended CGI and stop-motion and proved there’s still magic in the property, pulling in $97 million worldwide, including $24 million from China. The original 1943 book has been translated into over 300 languages with more than 200 million copies sold globally.

The new adaptation aims...

Redemption Or Retribution: Director Smriti Mundhra On Oscar-Shortlisted Death Row Doc ‘I Am Ready, Warden’
Image
“I am ready to go. I am ready, Warden.” These were the last words of death row inmate John Henry Ramirez shortly before his execution in the Polunsky Unit of the Department of Criminal Justice in Livingston, Texas. This final statement became the foundation for filmmaker Smriti Mundhra’s documentary — and the title of the film — I Am Ready, Warden.

The short, from MTV Documentary Films, recounts the emotionally charged story of Ramirez, who was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in 2008. His victim was Pablo Castro, a convenience store employee in Corpus Christi, Texas. After stabbing Castro almost three dozen times in a botched robbery, Ramirez fled to Mexico; it took four years before he was apprehended and extradited. On death row, Ramirez sought to turn his life around; he studied the Bible and expressed deep remorse for his crime. Jan Trujillo, a devout Bible teacher – and strong...

Jussie Smollett’s Conviction Overturned in Alleged Hate Crime Hoax
Image
Jussie Smollett’s conviction in an alleged hate crime hoax was overturned on Thursday by the Illinois Supreme Court.

The “Empire” actor was convicted in December 2021 of five felony counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly staging a hate crime against himself in 2019 and was sentenced to 150 days in county jail, plus 30 months of probation and $130,000 in restitution. This came after the original charges against him were dropped in March 2019, but the case was picked back up when the state conducted an independent inquiry with a special prosecutor. In December 2023, a state appellate court rejected his bid for an appeal and it was ruled that he would have to complete his full sentence, six days of which he served before being freed pending appeal. Earlier this year, the Illinois Supreme Court agreed to hear his appeal.

In an opinion released on Thursday, the Illinois Supreme Court found that the special prosecutor...

‘Grotesquerie’ Episodes 5-6 Recap: Did Lois Kill The Serial Killer?
Image
After watching the first six episodes of Grotesquerie, I am certain that either Detective Lois Tryon is hallucinating about the titular serial killer or the murderer is none other than the shady priest, Charlie Mayhew. A third scenario could be that the series is executed so poorly that it makes most of the scenes look tacky, almost like everything is happening in a dream. Anyway, coming back to our weekly recap, the fifth episode picked up from where last week’s episode had ended. Lois and Sister Megan Duval gave a lift to a blood-soaked woman named Andrea, who requested they drop her off at a nearby motel where she was staying. Now, this motel in itself seemed quite strange. The episode failed to explain why so many unusual things were happening around this motel and how it was linked to the Grotesquerie killer, so maybe the creators aren’t...

Josh Gad Has One Big Regret About Voicing Olaf In Disney's Frozen
Image
When Josh Gad joined the voice cast of Disney's animated movie "Frozen," which came out in 2013, he probably didn't think that he was about to become part of one of the biggest pop culture juggernauts in recent history. Both the original and its 2019 sequel, "Frozen II," made buckets of money at the box office, while the first movie also scored an Academy Award for best original song (thanks to the inescapable earworm "Let It Go"). Plus, Gad's character Olaf, a living snowman who wants to experience summer, became a breakout success on his own. So does Gad have any regrets about his "Frozen" experience? Yes, actually. He wishes he'd changed his voice a little more for the character.

"If I could do it all over again, I would not have lent that snowman my voice. I would've created a different voice," Gad said while participating in an interview at Fan Expo Canada,...

‘Cabrini’ Producer Jonathan Sanger Says the Film Is More Than a Religious Story
Image
When Oscar-winning producer Jonathan Sanger was first pitched “Cabrini,” the story of the first American saint, he wasn’t quite sure he was right for the project.

“I said, ‘I think it’s a great idea. I think you should make the movie. I don’t really think I’m the right guy to produce this,’” Sanger recalls of his early conversation with executive producer J. Eustace Wolfington. “I tend to like to make stories about real people, that most people who watch these stories can relate to. And I don’t know how to relate to a saint.”

Wolfington wouldn’t take no for an answer, telling Sanger he was missing the point: Francesca Cabrini may have become a saint, but her powerful story of overcoming adversity as both a woman and an Italian immigrant takes place far before her posthumous canonization in 1946.

“The more I learned about her,...

Portal A announces nine-project slate for $500,000 Moonshots venture
Image
Portal A has revealed nine projects it is developing as part of its $500,000 investment in experimental content. The digital-savvy production company is backing an eclectic mix of digital programs through the Moonshots program it introduced this past February.

Several of the projects in the Portal A slate will utilize emerging technologies like AI and short-form video. Nightmare Fuel, for example, is a TikTok series that will combine horror stories with AI-generated audio and visuals.

By embracing experimentation, Portal A’s Moonshots unit is taking the company “back to its innovative roots,” according to Portal A Director of Original Projects Jacob Motz. As the leader of the Moonshots program, Motz is looking to recapture the core values of a company that once produced global video game contests, upside-down cooking tutorials and shot-for-shot remakes of Abba music videos. (Portal A also produced the year-end Rewind videos alongside YouTube.)

10 Actors Who Have Only Delivered 1 Outstanding Performance In Their Careers
Image
Actors with one outstanding performance can make a lasting impact, showcasing the profound influence of a singular role on their legacy. For example, Kate Hudson's portrayal of Penny Lane in Almost Famous exemplifies her acting prowess and arguably remains her best movie role to this day. Another example is Hayden Christensen's performance in Shattered Glass, which stands out among his other roles and remains his best movie role.

Actors who have only delivered one outstanding performance in their movie careers are a testament to the unpredictability of artistic journeys in the film industry. An actor having just one exemplary performance under their belt doesn't necessarily mean that they're bad at what they do, quite the contrary. It just means that they haven't outdone themselves in that particular role, the reason for which can boil down to a number of factors in the highly collaborative world of filmmaking.

Black Panther Figure Celebrates Chadwick Boseman's Original MCU Suit
Image
Sideshow Collectibles honored Chadwick Boseman with a 1/6 scale figure of Black Panther in his original MCU suit.

Sideshow's Black Panther Legacy collection introduced a new toy with Black Panther's original on-screen suit, spotlighting the black and silver design as seen in 2016's Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther. The meticulously crafted figure is loaded with accessories, including a shield, spear, interchangeable hands, and the Wakandan warrior mask from T’Challa's combat training sequences. It also recreates the likeness of the late actor when unmasked. Liar Liar Gave Jim Carrey A Second Sneaky Role That You Probably Missed
Image
Tom Shadyac's 1997 comedy film "Liar Liar" had a light supernatural concept: Fletcher Reed, a typical Hollywood Workholic Dad constantly lies to his family and clients in order to succeed in life. As a lawyer, lying is handy. As a father, however, lying gets him in trouble with his five-year-old son, Max (Justin Cooper). As such, the child makes a birthday wish, longing that his dad cannot lie for just one day. The wish comes true.

What follows is a comedic showcase for star Jim Carrey to put his talents for physical comedy on display. The actor hilariously mugs and thrashes about in agony as Fletcher's newfound truthfulness gets him in various amounts of trouble. In one case, he cannot lie to exonerate a dishonest client. In another, he says openly lascivious things to a woman on the elevator. He gets slapped in the face and even arrested for his comments.

New York to Increase State Film Incentive to $700 Million
Image
New York is poised to dramatically increase its film tax incentive from $420 million a year to $700 million, as it looks to stave off competition from New Jersey and Georgia.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced an agreement Thursday night on a $229 billion budget, after weeks of negotiations with state lawmakers.

Among many other provisions, the budget will increase the size of the film tax credit program, as well as raise the credit percentage from 25% to 30%, bringing it in line with rival states. The program will also be extended to 2034, according to a source familiar with the conceptual agreement.

The agreement with lawmakers will allow productions to receive a tax credit on above-the-line costs — salaries for actors, directors, writers and producers. The state previously offered credit only for below-the-line costs. The above-the-line costs will be capped, though it is not yet certain at what level.

Hochul first proposed the increase in February. The...
