The Name in itself

I am not sure if anyone mentioned this but the lead's name was the first thing I picked up on... Malison, some might think its a combination of Melissa and Allison or Malory and Allison, but it comes from old latin (as if it could be anything else) Maledicere meaning to speak badly of a man or a male figure. However in the 13th century after Malison became gender neutral, and was being used more often, it took on a new meaning, in today's webster, the word Malison means CURSE, TO CURSE or CURSED.

So using it as a First Name, was creatively a good idea, I can see how it might have been overlooked by the audience, specially since Malison is not something one hears in a day to day conversation, besides it has largely been supplanted by its younger cousin MALEDICTION.

The Hexecutioners review

A murky horror picture in which two young women are despatched to a remote, creepy old house to assist its occupant in a mercy killing. Once there, they find that things are not quite what they seem. Weak and unfocused, with a very slow build to a confusing climax. The lead character will lose most viewers' sympathies early on when she abandons her pet cat in the countryside.

Confusing

This film starts off fairly straightforward. Euthanasia has been legalized and two young, attractive women, who carry out this work, have been assigned a job at a large creepy mansion. It reveals that this place and it's owners are involved in some sort of dark Himalayan (I think) cult and it all gets very weird and hard to follow. Visually it's OK so rather try and understand the plot I just went along that. Strange film, I wouldn't waste my time trying to understand it with a second viewing.

What a bore. What was it about anyway?

Alright, so this movie started out kind of good. Had a creepy moment in the beginning. Unfortunately this early moment was the best (and scariest) thing about the whole movie.

A shame, because this movie had potential. Sort of. But it's taken in the wrong direction, and just wasted. To be honest, for it to be better the whole plot should have developed in another direction. Meaning, you know, different plot.

It has decent acting, looks decent, but it's just too boring. Boring, and just doesn't add up. Being boring is the worst thing a movie can be, because movies exist solely to entertain.

So, to sum up, slow, boring, and almost nothing happens in this "horror" movie. Better luck next time.

2 girls work for a company who assists family's in helping there loved ones commit suicide or is it murder.

So I watched this movie with a guarded reviewers mind because I was fed words like boring and having no point. Well those who felt that way in my opinion were 50% on point because the movie was definitely not boring. The movie starts off with a couple quick scares that were pretty creepy in the first 10 mins. Liv Collins plays the lead and has one of those faces that is very recognizable but you have no idea where you've seen her before, and Sarah Power who has been in some very popular movies American Pie being one of them, Shows us she has a lot of hidden talent along with her Beautiful looks. The acting, writing and score was all above average and quite enjoyable. Every character thru the first half had a witty dialogue that was lightly comedic at times. The pace of the movie was also fine and had pretty good mystery injected into the storyline. And that's where it all starts to crumble bringing me back to the other 50% of having no point or a very unfulfilling storyline. A sky burial was something I heard of but never really did any investigating on the ritual, it's pretty disturbing and knowing that some tribes or abarrigian people still carryout this Tibetan style burial is mind blowing, The problem with this movie was the fact we really don't get the right information as to why this is even taking place along with other characters popping up saying a few words and then disappearing. It's also unclear as to why a character can go from being frightened by everything in their surroundings and then a minute later wants to explore every creepy room they come too. Too many other characters were a mystery and remained that way confusing the watcher even more. I give it a 4/10 I wouldn't highly recommend this movie but it was OK to watch a good original idea and good film quality but the actions of some of the characters and story line was completely Horrific and not in the good way👎.

Count the candles whilst you wait for something to happen.

A film that you would think would be asking questions on the morality of euthanasia, as this is the employment of the main characters, but no, it doesn't. It does start off doing so when we hear the brooding sermonising of Walter Bardon as the bible bellowing Mr Poole. Once Malison's out of the way we soon realise this becomes just a ghost story set around the ending of an old mans life by euthansia. Nothing really wrong with the opening scenes where we are introduced to the main characters: Liv Collins as Malison, a poverty stricken, conscientious novice who fouls up on her debut assignment in her new employment. And Sarah Power as Olivier, a professionally detatched, tough, badd-ass with 3 years service who gets partnered up with Malison on her next assignment to get her over her inept start. The competant acting arises some optimism for the rest of the film, but sadly this soon disolves when the ghosts start appearing and disappearing without doing much else but appear then disappear. This is where counting candles may become a suitable alternative to watching the lack of any worthwile action. In fact the most creepy creep around is the house steward, the son of the doomed owner, another well acted role. The final scenes, the expected demise of the owner of the house, rise to something which we would have hoped would have been the norm for the middle part. It is right out of Edgar Allan Poe territory, before the film loses it's way with a couple of more deaths, one not surprising but gruesome, and one surprising but less gruesome. The film rounds off with a rather pointless ending.

Monotonous movie with a lack of story...

Given the movie's cover, I must admit that I was immediately lured in. The promise of a horror movie is always something that gets my attention. I hadn't heard about this movie prior to finding it. I didn't read the synopsis, I just picked it up and decided to give it a go.

Somewhat of a mistake on my side. Because this movie was horribly boring and pointless. The movie started out rather well, but then it fell into a seemingly endless spiral and never recovered, and the movie just kept getting more and more boring as it progressed.

So boring that I turned it off with only about 10 minutes remaining. I was ready to call it quits at 1 hour into the ordeal, but decided against it in the slight hope that the movie would improve. It didn't!

"The Hexecutioners" offers nothing of any interest at any level. Well, aside from it actually having fairly adequate acting performances from a rather small and limited crew of performing actors and actresses. Just a shame that they had absolutely nothing to work with in terms of script and storyline.

My rating of 3 out of 10 is solely based on the production level of the movie, because that was rather good. Everything else in the movie, not so good.

This movie is not one that I could or would recommend that you waste your time, money or effort on. I did, and I regret it horribly.

Loses its way

The story centres on two young women recruited into a euthanasia company; Malison, (Liv Collins) a timid girl who does it because she needs the money; and Olivia, a cynical street-wise woman who, well, just does it. The job in hand just happens to be at the usual creepy Gothic mansion, overseen by the usual creepy keeper, Edgar, (Tim Burd) who instructs the women that the death must be carried out to a strict ritual.

It should be said that there is no problem with the acting which is superb, even by the minor characters, but some of the CGI is not so good and then there is the supernatural element when faceless figures appear and then there is the little girl. Also, some things do not add up. For instance, rooms which are pitch black suddenly have lots of lit candles - how does that happen? The ending, for me anyway, did not make much sense, but by then I was losing interest. A pity because it could have been different.

Smart and unusual

I like this film, because it is a good surprise to me; I mean the scheme, the plot, that you won't see anywhere. That's what I expect the most in a film: being surprised. But the horror element was too much for my taste, I quite did not follow everything and the overall result is not my cup of tea. However, I repeat, this plot remains interesting, and it's a shame that is seems to be so underrated. I still don't know if I could recommend it to someone else, because this kind of scheme doesn't fit to everyone. But you can try, precisely for the offbeat story that this film proposes. Good effort and "courage" from the producers anyway.

That was not what I expected

This movie starts like any other cheap, akward and clumsy b-horror movie could. Things move along and then after some time the people making this film apparently start taking drugs and everything goes weird. All reason and sense are thrown out of the window and you start asking questions - like "What the hell was that?" Or "Who is that and where did he come from?" Or even "Did somebody change the channel, this doesn't seem like the same movie anymore?".

Well yes, it's artsy and strange - a little bit boring. But is it any good? That's a difficult question. I'd say it's pretty well made, acting is ok. But what is it, it's clearly not a simple horror movie but more of an art movie - and for one of those I'd say it's decent. But I didn't start watching a freaking art movie, so I'm not happy.

Hopelessly scattered good ideas are treated poorly in both writing and execution

Even within the first fragment of the runtime we're greeted with numerous examples of characters, situations, and dialogue so outrageously far-fetched, or plainly humorous in tone that one may reasonably suppose Tony Burgess had written his screenplay as a horror-comedy. In the very least, portions may have been written that way, and then were not rewritten when the plan changed. Regardless, that makes it all the more awkward that director Jesse Thomas Cook treated the material very seriously as a straight horror flick; I guess he wasn't in on the joke. Actually, the joke's on us, as viewers, because within the first fifteen minutes and change protagonist Malison is supposed to be made sympathetic, and then in a few short moments, that sympathy is dashed. Before it is, Cook gives us a scene that changes tone halfway through, and in that same scene it comes across that either lead Liv Collins lacked the acting chops to manage the part, or Cook lacked the directorial skills to bring the character's unsteady emotions to bear. Seeing as Cook's direction is already in question otherwise, I'll suppose that it's his fault, and not Collins'.

How is it that I came across 'The hexecutioners?' Why did I make a special note to check it out? I assume all in the usual way of stumbling across it, and being enticed by the premise. Unfortunately, the premise is about as good as it gets. There are good ideas throughout in most every regard, including in the plot. By and large, however, the presentation is also gawkily, gracelessly forthright and unsubtle in most every regard, lacking the measured and nuanced approach that would allow those ideas to take root and have what we can only assume was the intended impact. This applies to Cook's direction, to the scene writing and mostly downright awful dialogue, and to the narrative and unconvincing characterizations. It applies to the somewhat bare-faced production values, to the imbalanced audio mix, to the sound effects and their use, and even to Steph Copeland's original music. Within individual scenes, let alone from one to the next, it sometimes comes across that Cook lost track of what he was doing, and the editing doesn't help. In fairness, the same might be true of Burgess, even after he presumably had time to proofread his screenplay. Scenes often play out with such hopelessly clunky tawdriness that the intended effect is fully lost.

For good measure, there's also perfectly gratuitous nudity, a kiss that serves no purpose whatsoever, and abundant select imagery that's heedlessly straightforward. At the same time as all this, the plot development is curiously slothful, and scattered. I repeat that there were good ideas on hand, but it sadly comes across that Burgess was not the right person to shape them into a screenplay, and Cook was not the right person to bring them to fruition. What value the picture might claim is helplessly diffuse, leading to very piecemeal appreciation of odds and ends that aren't meaningfully brought together - as in, "Hmm, that's a nice touch," and "There, that could have been something, too," and "I see what could have been done with this." I'm inclined to believe that the end result reflects earnest intent and effort, but the capability simply was not there. I can at least appreciate that the cast is making an effort, and some instances of acting intermittently come off better than others, but under all the stated conditions, the actors can only do so much. I guess the production design and art direction are swell, and even the consideration for lighting, but how far does that get us?

I feel a little bad being so critical. I want to like 'The hexecutioners' more than I do. For that to happen, however, would have required that the worthy ideas herein had been assembled in a cogent, cohesive form. And that's simply not the case. The movie makes a poor first impression, and my favor only ever continued to slide downward, with all points of potential being like rocks in a stream around which the water of the sorry tableau flows. In no time the viewing experience becomes a chore, and we can "watch" without actively engaging. That's probably the preferred method, when all is said and done, so we don't think too hard about what a mess the sum total is. I suppose I'm glad for those who get more out of this feature than I do, but I just don't know how they do it. My recommendation, regrettably, is to just avoid 'The hexecutioners' altogether, with hope that at some point those involved might better demonstrate their skill.

Well produced with an interesting story

I don't know why the low rating on here. Perhaps it needed too much thinking about for the average slasher movie fan.

The story is intriguing as it starts out quite normal and soon descends in to darkness with wonderful acting by all the main cast, and real through from the production team in putting all together - in a very atmospheric visual experience.

This is the kind of movie you have to watch properly - then you really get drawn in to the world of the characters and the unfolding sinister experience.

This film is worth so much more than the 4 rating on here.

THE HEXECUTIONERS' SONG

Nifty little Horror-Thriller bout a couple of professional euthanists who get in over their heads when a client pays extra for "special dispensations" that include ritual sacrifice.

You've seen all these images before, but seldom so satisfyingly assembled and the wonderful soundtrack sounds like sackbuts blaring from some remote Himalayan mountain monastery of Satanists.

A welcome surprise.
