Is this movie kind of dumb? Yes. But did I enjoy it? Honestly- yes. Obviously the whole trope that two good friends would jeopardize said friendship over a random guy is ridiculously overdone and stupid, but as long as you don't take it seriously you'll have a solid time. It's not witty humor- it's largely slapstick comedy. If that's not your thing, then skip it. But if you're looking for something dumb but entertaining, give it a shot.
Why did William H. Macy direct this movie?
One of the most esteemed actors around has branched into direction in recent years. His first movie, "Rudderless", was an equally uninspired waste of time, but at least the basic premise of that movie wasn't immediately familiar.
"The Layover" is about two female friends, one a goody-two-shoes, the other an alleged bad girl, who make an impromptu decision to go on a vacation together. On the plane they meet some guy and immediately start competing with each other for him. On the cover, this guy is a dead ringer for "True Blood" Aussie actor Ryan Kwanten, who probably would have been better in the role. The guy they get (Matt Barr) never really conveys anything other than token eye candy, but then, neither does Kate Upton as Meg, the bad girl. She's not as bad an actress as you might expect from someone who is famous only for her looks. But she doesn't really make an impression in this movie aside from that, and nor can you believe her as someone who makes her living as a salesgirl.
It mightn't surprise you that the movie isn't funny, unless you know that it was written by David Hornsby and Lance Krall, who were so hilarious on "Joe Schmo".
Two seasoned comedy writers and a great actor at the helm. How did they add up to something this forgettable?

This so called movie is so freaking lame and bad. A comedy that couldn't make me laugh even once
Alexandria Daddario and Kate Upton are obviously having a blast in the occasionally funny raunchy comedy. And they both come through in the eye candy department as well. They'll have you wondering which of them you'd choose if you were the lucky guy they were smitten with. It's light and fluffy. And watchable, of course, Kate and Alexandria would be.
I am guessing the main reason to watch this movie is the cast, and it delivers. Everything you would expect to be there, is there - in full.
Dialogue is a bit stilted, but then again: to be expected. Acting and story also not amongst the strengths of this flick.
All in all: one of the breast movies of 2017.

- WissenswertesWas meant to be the first feature length film for Lea Michele since New Year's Eve (2009) but she had to drop out of the project due to her commitments with Scream Queens (2015). Michele was ultimately replaced by Alexandra Daddario.
- PatzerThe scene when the airplane takes off initially is a Boeing 737, a single aisle aircraft. The actors are sitting in a single aisle aircraft. The next time you see the plane in flight, it is a Boeing 787, a wide body aircraft with twin aisles. Following scenes show the actors in a single aisle aircraft.
