As the Flickers Rhode Island International Film Festival kicked off its 29th edition among 1,500 attendees at the Providence Performing Arts Center on Aug. 5, the event’s leadership, alongside some of the state’s most influential figures in film and politics, were on hand to make a pitch to Hollywood amid a disrupted festival circuit and an industry increasingly looking beyond California for production opportunities.
Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee, in a brief speech ahead of the Riiff opening night presentation, championed the state’s “scenic views, historic architecture and talented workforce that make it a choice spot for the film and TV industry.” Added Providence Mayor Brett Smiley: “As a creative capital,
the arts are what we care about, what we invest in.”

After the long Labor Day weekend filled with friends, family, and fun, it's possible some of us have gotten a little bit behind on our binge-watching. However, there's little time to focus on the past since the first week of September is simply filled to the brim with exciting new shows, seasons, and spinoffs that our watch lists need to be prepared for. Prime Video launched the teen drama...

The arrival of Labor Day weekend means that it's time to bid farewell to another summer season. But before we swap out our beachwear for leaf-peeping gear, it's a good time to take stock of which prestige hopefuls and would-be blockbusters released on the big and small screen between the Memorial Day to Labor Day corridor lived up to their commercial and/or awards potential. If there’s anything that seems to preoccupy the TV work of writer-director Brad Ingelsby more than his native Philadelphia, it’s the wages of sin passed down from parents to children. Ingelsby entered HBO’s roster of auteurs with the 2021 series “Mare of Easttown,” for which Kate Winslet won an Emmy for her portrait of a grief-stricken cop looking into a young woman’s murder. Mare herself was in mourning for her son, who died by suicide before the events of the show; the case’s resolution — spoiler alert for a half-decade-old mystery — hinged on the child of Mare’s best friend and the violent lessons he learned from his father.
With the limited series “Task,” Ingelsby once again returns to Philly’s exurban environs to follow a law enforcement officer in the long aftermath of a loss. But unlike “Mare of Easttown,” “Task” is not a character study dominated by a single protagonist,...

To be Black in Martha’s Vineyard in August is momentous. The first week of the month, folks ferry in for Legacy Week — which honors Historically Black Colleges and Universities — and the African American Film Festival in the historically Black neighborhood of Oak Bluffs. Two blocks away from Inkwell Beach, Oak Bluffs’ waterfront, sits Nashawena Avenue, where Jane C. Edmonds — a civil rights leader and owner of two homes on the street — lives in a 10 bedroom house. In 1966, when she was just 19, her mother hired the island’s only Black...

Created by Julian Fellowes, The Gilded Age is set in the Gilded Age of New York and draws inspiration from several real-life incidents, as well as historical families. One of the families at the center of the show is the new-money Russells. According to Distractify, the Russell family is loosely inspired by the real-life Vanderbilt family.
Further, in HBO’s official podcast for The Gilded Age, Fellowes revealed that George Russell (Morgan Spector) is inspired by the real-life historical figure, Jay Gould, a notorious robber baron. On the other hand, Carrie Coon‘s Bertha Russell is based on Alva Vanderbilt. Keep reading to find out how the Vanderbilts influenced Fellowes’ characterization of the Russells.

When The Gilded Age Season 3 finished, all I could think about was the fact that I could have easily watched another eight episodes to get me through to the return of fall television.
During its first two seasons, the series played out in the fall and winter, and while any time is a good time for The Gilded Age, there was something enjoyable about having it air during the summer.
Without much else to geek out over, save for a few cable goodies and reality television fare, the series was able to build momentum each week, making its third season the most popular one yet.
(Karolina Wojtasik/HBO)
Not only was it popular, but it was also the most cohesive and entertaining from an audience perspective.

Mayor of Kingstown's Mike McLusky isn’t about to lose his crown without a fight, and we have your first look at Season 4 as part of Collider's Exclusive Preview for the Fall TV season. We've teamed up with Paramount+ to bring you the first image of Jeremy Renner and Edie Falco together on screen — a tense face-off that sets the tone for the show’s return on October 26.
The photo captures McLusky in mid-motion, buttoning his jacket as if bracing for a verdict. Across the desk, Falco’s as-yet-unnamed character leans forward in an office stacked with overflowing files, a single desk lamp cutting through the shadows, and barred windows serving as a constant reminder of Kingstown’s grim reality. It’s a room where alliances are made and broken — and neither party looks ready to blink first. It's a dark, grimy atmosphere, and you can tell some serious sh...

The Gilded Age might look like pure period-drama escapism, but behind the silk gowns, glittering ballrooms, and high-society scandals lies one of the most fascinating turning points in American history. Set in the late 1800s, it drops us right into a time when railroads, steel, and oil were minting millionaires overnight and when old-money elites were doing everything they could to keep these flashy newcomers out of their social circles.
Created by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey), the series stars Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, Morgan Spector, and more. The show follows a cast of characters, some invented, others pulled straight from real-life history, as they navigate ambition, rivalry, and the shifting balance of power. From glamorous parties to cutthroat politics and whispered scandals, all of it is set against the backdrop of one of America’s biggest social shake-ups.
Moreover, a lot of these stories are inspired by actual historical figures and events.

Spoiler Alert: The following reveals major plot points from HBO’s The Gilded Age, Season 3 finale, “My Mind is Made Up.”
Peggy Scott has come a long way since Season 1 of HBO’s The Gilded Age, and no one is prouder than Denée Benton, who plays the ambitious writer in the hit period drama.
But even Benton was surprised when she learned of all the beautiful storylines her character would experience in Season 3, as well as the knowledge that she would be starring opposite two powerhouse actresses very closely: a returning Audra McDonald, who plays Peggy’s mom Dorothy Scott, and newly cast Phylicia Rashad as Elizabeth Kirkland, the prickly mother of Peggy’s new love interest Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica).
In conversation with Deadline, Benton said it was “a masterclass” watching McDonald and Rashad go toe-to-toe in many scenes, particularly when the snobby Elizabeth attempts to intimidate the more humble Scott family,...

“The Gilded Age” has reached a new viewership high every week for five weeks in a row now, with Sunday’s Season 3 finale clearing 5 million viewers after three days.
That total comes from a combination of Nielsen’s tally of linear viewers on HBO’s cable channel plus streams on HBO Max, which are measured by Warner Bros. Discovery itself. When accounting for the first three days of availability of all eight episodes of Season 3, the finale achieved an 88% increase from the premiere, which hit a total of 2.7 million viewers back in June.
According to Wbd, Season 3 is 30% ahead of the viewership Season 2 had achieved in the same amount of time. If delayed viewing remains consistent with the season’s success thus far, it will become the most-watched season of the show, which HBO measures based on each title’s first 90 days of availability. Spoiler Alert !!!The article reveals major plot points from Netflix's Fixed
What happens in the new Netflix film Fixed that causes Honey to leave the competition even after winning the title? Genndy Tartakovsky’s dream project, Fixed, has finally landed on Netflix, drawing mixed reviews. While the longtime fans of the animator, known for classics like Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory, praise the 2D animation and nostalgic visual style, not everyone feels the same.
The adult comedy, packed with risqué humor, follows Bull, a slick and quick-witted Staffordshire Bull Terrier who must face the harsh reality of being neutered after his owners grow tired of his relentless humping.
Needless to say, it’s not something that everyone would enjoy, but there are elements that might win viewers over, especially the romantic thread between Bull and Honey and the lingering question of whether they end up together by the end.
