‘Bystanders’ Director Mary Beth McAndrews on the Power of Her Female-Directed Rape Revenge Film: ‘No More Male Gaze’
Image
Mary Beth McAndrews is determined to make art that wakes people up.

“There’s always been strong women in horror, incredible female characters,” she says. “I think what’s shifting in the horror of the last decade is more and more women are being given budgets by people to make movies that are much more of a sledgehammer, rather than a delicate little way to needle it, subtextually talk about women’s issues. Now we’re coming in with sledgehammers and saying, ‘It’s time, you’ve got to listen. We’re going to shove glass in your eyes and say no more male gaze.'”

McAndrews is smashing onto the scene with her directorial debut “Bystanders,” now available on VOD via Dread. The film is about Abby (Brandi Botkin), a young woman who visits a frat party with her friends, who are drugged, raped and chased by men. Yet...

Insidious: The Last Key (2018)
10 Best Horror Movies of 2018 You've Already Missed
Insidious: The Last Key (2018)
We're barely past the midpoint and it's already been a great year for horror movies. A Quiet Place pleased critics and genre aficionados in droves, Hereditary left audiences shocked and gasping, Upgrade delivered unprecedented ultraviolence, and Annihilation found an unlikely yet enthralling intersect between fantasy and body horror. We've also seen solid sequels in Insidious: The Last Key, The First Purge, and Hellraiser: Judgment. And the best may be yet to come, with The Nun, The Predator, and Halloween all coming down the pike when it comes to 2018 horror Movies.

Sure, there have been some disappointments as well but there've also been some incredible genre offerings that have fallen through the cracks. If you're one of those cinephiles who complains there's nothing new or original horror movies being produced these days, you simply aren't looking hard enough.

But hey, that's what I'm here for: To separate the wheat from the...

Imagine 2018: Méliès D'Argent Competition Titles Announced
In the world of European genre cinema the big awards that recognize the best of the region are the Méliès, awarded by the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation. More of a prestige award for the moment, winning any of the Méliès each year brings clout to the filmmaker and draws the attention of producers and financiers looking to back up exciting filmmakers and their projects in the years to come.    Perusing the list I myself would have a lot of catching up to do, seeing less than half of the eleven titles that make up this year's d'argent list. I could speak to the quality of films like Hagazussa, The Lodgers, November and Tiere. If the others are anywhere close to the quality of...

The Lodgers movie review: home is where the haunting is
MaryAnn’s quick take… Cursed twins who speak in faux-byronic enigmas, a crumbling manse full of dead birds and velvet drapes, and strained psychosexual nonsense. There’s nothing eerie here, just the puerile and misjudged. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

(learn more about this)

It’s her from up at the big house,” they sneer at the grocery in the village. The year is 1920-ish, the setting is rural Ireland, “her” is Rachel (Charlotte Vega: American Assassin), and the big house is the crumbling manse she lives in — if you can call it living dum dum Dum — with her twin brother, Edward (Bill Milner: Dunkirk). The house is all dead birds and velvet drapes — very goth, much spook — and there the cursed twins speak in faux-byronic...

FrightFest Glasgow 2018: The Lodgers Review
Author: Ben Robins

Gothic romance, tortured siblings and a needlessly huge-’n’-haunted manor house hidden right out in the sticks; you can bet your lucky stars it’s another period-set Irish horror. And although Brian O’Malley’s sumptuously shot The Lodgers compounds plenty of the old-school genre nuts-and-bolts, with some slick effects work and solid performances, it’s far from the sort of spirit-stalking shake-up a lot of the horror crowd might well be hoping for.

Finding some sort of new ground in the Anglo-Irish conflicts of early 1920s Ireland, there’s a decent-enough central dynamic in a pair of outcast twins; orphans hidden away in a grubby old mansion off the beaten track, governed by a couple of omni-present, omni-pissed-off local ghosts. And when Charlotte Vega’s Rachel finally starts to rebel, hanging out with a local soldier and giving the finger to white-sheet mum-and-dad, the necessary...

Review: The Lodgers Offers Nudity And Ghosts, But Few Scares
I’m a sucker for gothic horror, with its inky shadows that coat the corners of dilapidated mansions, its repressed sexuality that busts out in dramatic gasps, its ghosts who break hearts and snap minds (and sometimes spines). So, I expected to love The Lodgers, a gothic horror tale about the suffering siblings trapped in a haunted home with a dark history. Sadly, the script by David Turpin feels like a lazy check-list of the genre (creepy house, maudlin children, incestuous overtones, mysterious ghosts). And the direction by Brian O’Malley does nothing to elevate that basic approach.

How Many Records Will Black Panther Break in Its 2nd Weekend?
While early projections put Marvel's Black Panther between the $100M and $120M range for its opening weekend, the blockbuster doubled its lower projection for the three-day weekend ($201.7M) and nearly doubled the high end of the projection for the President's Day four-day holiday weekend ($235M). The movie will have a bit more competition this weekend, going up against the Warner Bros. comedy Game Night, Paramount's sci-fi thriller Annihilation and Orion Pictures' Every Day, although none of those movies are expected to put up much of a fight, and it's possible that Black Panther could set yet another box office record in its second frame.

Black Panther couldn't manage to break the all-time opening weekend record of $247.9M set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but there is still an outside chance it could break another one of Star Wars: The Force Awakens' many box office records, with an impressive second-weekend.

Black Panther Smashes Box Office Records with a Whopping $192.3M
Marvel's highly-anticipated Black Panther was already one of the most highly-anticipated movies of 2018, with many expecting it to break box office records left and right over the President's Day holiday weekend. Early box office projections put the movie's opening weekend between $100 million and $120 million, but the movie managed to far exceed those expectations with a whopping $192.3 million, breaking the all-time February opening weekend record of $132.4 million set by 20th Century Fox's R- rated Deadpool last year. The estimate was also high enough to earn the fifth highest debut of all time, behind The Avengers ($207.4M), Jurassic World ($208.8M), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220M) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247.9M).

Black Panther had already been making headlines for the past few weeks for a number of different reasons, one being the 100% Fresh rating it scored on Rotten Tomatoes when the first wave of reviews surfaced, although it...

How Many Box Office Records Will Black Panther Break This Weekend?
Marvel brings its highly-anticipated Black Panther to theaters this weekend, and while a mid-February release is a bit early for an McU movie, the hype is just as big as any other Marvel movie, perhaps even bigger. The movie made headlines last week when it scored 100% on Rotten Tomatoes after the first wave of reviews come in, but it has come down to Earth a bit since then, with a 97% (106 Fresh reviews out of 109), and now the big question is can it actually break box office records this month? If it matches our projection of $136.4 million, then, yes, it can.

Back in January, box office analysts predicted anywhere between a $100 million and $120 million opening weekend for Black Panther, but that was before the impressive 100% Rt score and the extended Super Bowl TV spot was released, which certainly helped add to the growing buzz swirling around the movie. It's not uncommon...

New Trailer For The Eerie Gothic Irish Horror Thriller The Lodgers
We've got an eerie new trailer for you to check out for a wickedly creepy gothic haunted house horror thriller called The Lodgers. The story is set in the 1920s and centers on twins who live together in an old gothic haunted mansion filled with dark and malevolent spirits that terrorize them.

I love watching horror movies like this, and I really like what I'm seeing in this trailer. The movie has a similar tone to films like The Others, Crimson Peak, and The Woman in Black, all of which I liked. Here's the synopsis:

A gothic ghost story about orphaned twins Edward and Rachel who share a crumbling manor in 1920s rural Ireland. But they are not alone. They share the house with unseen entities who control them with three absolute rules. As separate fates draw them apart, the twins must face the terrible truth about their family’s ghostly tormentors.
