‘The Squad: Home Run’ (2023) Ending Explained & Movie Summary: Does Niels Get His Revenge?
Image
Is there anything the French don’t do well? If you’ve seen Benjamin Rocher’s sequel to the 2015 action-drama The Squad, I bet you’d agree it’s time we gave French action flicks, and rap music too, for that matter, a fair shot at wooing us. Steadily bolstered by the slapstick elements that add an extra dosage of warmth to the uniquely emotional narrative, The Squad: Home Run revives the adorably quirky cop Niels Cartier’s amusing shenanigans one more time. Here’s how Cartier’s bizarre hunt for his wife’s killers goes down in The Squad: Home Run.

Spoilers Ahead

What Happens in the Film?

Don’t get me wrong; losing a loved one to a freak explosion is traumatizing. But it’s not an easy job to keep a straight face when the unabashedly trope-y narrative of The Squad: Home Run takes a wilted page...

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken Shares Its Monstrously Good Main Theme [Exclusive]
Image
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken brings a new kind of monster into the DreamWorks universe. The unique spin on popular mythology portrays krakens as anything but the hungry ship-eaters they are understood to be, with the titular Ruby Gillman and her family simply doing their best to live some semblance of a normal life on land. The film joyfully subverts expectations and, in true DreamWorks fashion, boasts enough heart and humor to be enjoyable for the whole family.

The film aims to blend sweeping mythological concepts with the reality of being a teenager, and smoothly accomplishes its goal with the help of music by Grammy-winning composer Stephanie Economou. Economou is known for work on a range of projects including Jupiter’s Legacy and Manhunt, but thanks to a long history of collaboration with composer Harry Gregson-Williams has also worked on beloved films like The Martian and the live-action Mulan. ‘Suicide Squad’ Breakout Daniela Melchior Will Appear In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’
Image
Exclusive: The Suicide Squad breakout Daniela Melchior will have a small role in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, we can confirm.

But as director James Gunn confirmed late last year, the actress won’t be appearing as character Moondragon, which had been speculated online.

Filming recently wrapped on the anticipated threequel, which will star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Sylvester Stallone, Karen Gillan, Elizabeth Debicki and Will Poulter.

And that’s a picture wrap on the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. I love this amazing cast & crew & their beautiful talent & kind souls. I’m a lucky human to have them on the journey with me for nearly a decade. pic.twitter.com/oVQCIfJjuZ

— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) May 7, 2022

Gunn recently teased the involvement of an “unannounced actor” in the film. That person isn’t Melchior. Neither is it Keanu Reeves, per more online speculation.

Dee Bradley Baker and John Cena in Peacemaker (2022)
‘Peacemaker’ Spinoff Centered on Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller in the Works at HBO Max
Dee Bradley Baker and John Cena in Peacemaker (2022)
A “Peacemaker” spinoff centered on Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller is in the works at HBO Max, according to an individual with knowledge of the project. Davis is in talks to reprise the role.

“Watchmen” writer Christal Henry will write and executive produce the series.

Davis previously told Nerd Report that she is ”fascinated by the character,” who serves the DC Universe in a similar capacity as Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Waller is described as “a former congressional aide and government agent who is often placed in charge of the Suicide Squad, a semi-secret government-run group of former super villains working in return for amnesty.”

“Peacemaker” is a continuation of the story that Gunn started telling in his 2021 DC film “The Suicide Squad,” which was his R-rated spin on various DC characters. With this HBO Max series – which Gunn wrote and largely directed – the...

Every Version Of The Suicide Squad In Movies And TV, Ranked
Gary Cooper and Jane Wyatt in Sturm über dem Pazifik (1949)
Task Force X is one of the most volatile teams in comic book history. After all, with all of their lives in the balance, no one has main character immunity.

Peacemaker: The Bravest Main Characters
John Cena
A large part of Peacemaker's success is due to its hilarious and surprisingly endearing cast of characters. Led by a never-better John Cena, the ensemble grounds the show and makes it compelling, not to mention uproarious.

Related: 10 Other Suicide Squad Spin-Offs We'd Like To See In The Dceu After Peacemaker

That doesn't stop them from fulfilling their duty, which only confirms that heroes can come from the most unexpected places.

Updated Feb 22nd, by Ben Hathaway: James Gunn's sequel series to The Suicide Squad finds John Cena's Christopher Smith alive and—mostly—well. Like in the 2021 movie, Peacemaker is recruited by Amanda Waller and her shadowy A.

Peacemaker Episode 8 Review: It’s Cow or Never
Dee Bradley Baker and John Cena in Peacemaker (2022)
This Peacemaker review contains spoilers.

Peacemaker Episode 8

Ever since Peacemaker first premiered on Jan. 13, there’s been an internet group effort to figure out where it stands among other superhero TV shows and Dceu projects in terms of quality. I certainly understand the impulse to rank things, having just eagerly participated in Den of Geek’s own ranking of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But when it comes to Peacemaker, I had little desire to participate in these conversations.

The show has been so novel and enjoyable thus far that it seemed counterproductive to hold it up against the likes of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Doom Patrol, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, or any other current or former DC property. Peacemaker is here. Let’s enjoy it now and think about it later. That impulse to not overanalyze Peacemaker’s position in the superhero canon comes crashing down for me...

James Gunn Explains How The Suicide Squad Spin-Off Can Redeem Peacemaker

John Cena's Peacemaker was easily one of the biggest pleasant surprises in "The Suicide Squad," at least for those of us who knew nothing about the character previously. The team of villains and antiheroes looking for redemption needed to be balanced out with at least one genuine bad guy, which was a role that Peacemaker went above and beyond to fill.

It was always a fascinating choice on director James Gunn's part to pick this specific character to lead his own spin-off series on HBO Max -- long before the rest of the world had even seen Peacemaker in action! -- but in this case,...

The duo are joining as Agent Salmakia and Commander Roke, respectively, both ‘Gallivespian Spies’. In the Philip Pullman story, Gallivespians are tiny humanoids who evolved in their native universe’s earth.

In the books, Gallivespian Spies are described by Pullman thus: “He was striking to look at: he was no taller than Lord Asriel’s hand span, and as slender as a dragonfly, but the rest of Lord Asriel’s captains treated him with profound respect, for he was armed with a poisonous sting in the spurs on his heels. He and his kind, the Gallivespians, had few of the qualities of good spies except, of course, their exceptional smallness: they were so proud and touchy that they would never have remained inconspicuous if they had been of Lord Asriel’s size.

The director's DC outing has already produced one series with John Cena's Christopher Smith soon to be seen again in his Peacemaker series, and there have been a number of other characters rumored to be getting their own spin-offs as a result. When asked whether the rumors about Bloodsport getting his own show were true, Gunn had an interesting response.

"There is a possibility of seeing more #Bloodsport in the near future - something I'd love to see! - but there is nothing currently in development. So this story is false."

While that clearly puts to rest the rumors that a series is already in development,...

5 Ways Jakob Toretto Is John Cena’s Best Role Of 2021 (& 5 Ways It’s Peacemaker)
John Cena
John Cena is the star of 2021, as he has featured in not one, but two blockbuster movies, and he has been the most commended part of each movie. The Suicide Squad dressed the actor up in an outfit, not unlike the wrestling attire he’s used to, as Peacemaker, a ruthless murderer who kills in the name of peace. And F9 saw the former wrestler as the secondary villain with a sordid past.

Both roles show off Cena’s acting abilities in different ways, as one is deadpan and stoic and the other is outgoing and full of quotable one-liners. There are arguments to be made for either of them being his best role of 2021, but the most exciting of all is that they both have a future in their cinematic universes.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead Is Down to Return as Huntress, Will She Be Back in Black Canary?
Image
Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who is currently busy promoting her upcoming Netflix action thriller, Kate, is open to reprising her role as Huntress in the DC Extended Universe. Winstead debuted as Helena Bertinelli, a crossbow-wielding assassin in 2020's Birds of Prey. Winstead's take on the character was praised by most fans, and she was a standout character in the film. But with Birds of Prey underperforming at the box office, plans for a sequel and a Gotham City Sirens movie were put on hold indefinitely.

But recently, HBO Max announced a solo Black Canary movie starring Jurnee Smollet-Bell, leading many to believe that the characters of Birds of Prey may not be done just yet. Speaking to Collider, Winstead talked about the Black Canary movie and expressed her desire to play Huntress again. Here is what she said.

"I love her, too! I'm super excited about the Black Canary movie. I love Jurnee,...

‘The Suicide Squad’: A Discussion About Remakes and Studio Interefernce #ReleaseTheAyerCut
Image
Photo: ‘The Suicide Squad’ In 2016 the original ‘Suicide Squad’ was released in theaters worldwide to general distaste from almost everyone. The film was directed by David Ayer, famous for ‘End of Watch’, ‘Fury’, and ‘Training Day’. There is a resounding stylistic and thematic resonance to the vast majority of Ayer’s filmography - each entry is dark, gritty, based in reality, and hauntingly stark. One thing that is absolutely true about ‘Suicide Squad’ is that it would never be described as any of those adjectives. Okay, maybe I’d call it dark but it's a different kind of dark than ‘End of Watch’ where two police officers are struggling to survive in an LA shoot-out with Ak-47 wielding gang members. It is certainly a different kind of dark than ‘Fury’ where a tank operator finds himself alone in Nazi Germany with only his tank to aid him. And ‘Suicide Squad...

10 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About The Suicide Squad
Sylvester Stallone, Steve Agee, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, David Dastmalchian, Margot Robbie, and Daniela Melchior in The Suicide Squad (2021)
The Suicide Squad might not have performed as expected at the box office, but it’s the most talked-about movie amongst fans of the Dceu. The movie has become an instant classic for its R-rated violence, risk-taking, and turning unknown comic book characters into fan-favorites.

However, that doesn't mean there weren't any complications. There were a few speedbumps along the way as many people were concerned with the idea of creating an R-rated superhero movie with a cast of unknown characters. Between Warner Bros. wanting a PG-13 rating, Joel Kinnaman’s scheduling conflicts, and struggling with King Shark’s design, The Suicide Squad had a fascinating development.

James Gunn
Retro-Cast: If The Suicide Squad Was Made In The 1990s
James Gunn
In some ways, James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is inextricably linked to its time period. From the battle over R-rated comic book movies to the rocky history of the Dceu, from the disastrous process behind 2016's Suicide Squad to James Gunn's brief firing from Disney (to say nothing of the rich history of DC Comics characters it employs), it's a film with a lot of backstory behind it.

Still, imagine what the movie might look like if it were made in the 1990s. Despite how "of its time" it feels, its colorful characters and over-the-top style might not be so out of place in the era of Mystery Men and Tank Girl, and with such a massive cast, it's fun to picture who might have taken on those roles in another time.

The latest twist in a box office full of them came this weekend courtesy of 20th Century Studios’ “Free Guy,” the first movie from Disney in over a year released only in theaters. The film’s lack of availability on streaming, premium or otherwise, almost certainly played a factor in its early success. The question is how much. With a $28.4 million opening, the original comedy starring Ryan Reynolds has edged out the $26.2 million opening by Warner Bros.’ DC Comics hit “The Suicide Squad.”Like everything else at the box office, beating box office expectations has a variety of factors behind it, including the ongoing impact of Covid-19 on the theatrical market. Aside from the fact that “The Suicide Squad” was available on streaming at no extra charge, the expectations for each film were significantly different. “Squad” fell short of its projected $30 million debut despite some major advantages: the DC Comics label,...

9 Things About The Suicide Squad That Made No Sense
James Gunn
The over-the-top nature of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad obviously requires audiences to suspend their disbelief. This generally applies to the violence on hand, as the movie largely adheres to the concept of having an internal logic that was in play during Task Force X’s mission in Corto Maltese.

However, the movie still ventured into nonsensical territory, most of which was never explained. These plot holes relate to the characters’ decisions, the failure of the story to acknowledge the Dceu’s continuity, and things happening without prior setups. While the likes of Bloodsport and Harley Quinn have won over fans with their roles in the story, it’s hard to overlook the things that leave viewers scratching their heads.

The Suicide Squad hit theaters and HBO Max, and it ended up as one of the best-received Dceu movies since Man of Steel launched the new franchise. And part of the love might be because of its loyalty to the comics.

One of the biggest complaints about Dceu movies is that they veer too much from the DC Comics that adapt. Before the film's release, James Gunn said on Twitter that he was making The Suicide Squad based on the John Ostrander stories from the 1980s. He succeeded, as this felt more like the old-school Suicide Squad than the 2016 movie, and the critic reviews prove it was the right way to go.

This is doubly impressive considering erratic characters like Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, King Shark, among others, don’t come across as the kind of people who would accept the idea of friendship. Earlier films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Shazam! and others, have also included these issues, and the series still hasn’t gotten around to fixing them. Making movies is not an easy game… Making a movie on little to no budget is even harder. In my time as a reviewer and podcaster I have spoken to countless industry folks about their upcoming project, only for it to never actually see the light of day. Which is why when I come across a super-low budget Brit indie film I get excited to see that another one got made. Which means I am always so willing to at least try the film in an effort to put some respect on it.

Sometimes my willingness to do this yields very positive results when I discover a real gem. Other times… Well I rarely review the ones at the opposite end but there are definitely a few duds. This...
