‘Sight’ Review: Angel Studios’ Snooze-Inducing Biopic Might Have Been Better If It Was Preachier
Image
As absurd as it is to say about a film that ends with an onscreen Qr code imploring viewers to “Pay It Forward,” “Sight” probably would be better if it was preachier. At the very least, it would be more memorable.

The latest project from Angel Studios, “Sight” certainly looks and feels like the type of cheap contemporary Christian cinema that both its production company and its director specialize in. But whenever the movie looks like it might go full Christian medical drama a la the inexplicably Oscar-nominated “Breakthrough,” it always pulls back from launching into a sermon. Sure, there’s a kindly nun and an unbearable syrupy sweet church scene, but by the end of “Sight,” it’s not particularly clear how devout main character Ming Wang is to Christianity, or if he’s even a believer in the first place.

The lack of aggressive shilling for the world...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Most Important Moment Features One Word
Image
This article contains spoilers for all of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the show titled after her are both cultural icons. Buffy is one of those series that most sci-fi, fantasy, and horror fans have some kind of awareness of even if they have never watched an episode. It kick-started the careers of Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg, and David Boreanaz as Angel.

The series was also stuffed to the brim with memorable moments, from the hilarious (Buffy trying to mime staking a vampire in “Hush”), to the kick-ass (Buffy taking out the Judge with a rocket launcher in “Innocence”), to the gut-wrenching (Buffy finding Joyce in “The Body”). But there is one moment that stands out above all the others and embodies what the show is about.

It is the making of the character of Buffy, it is a mission statement for the show,...

Don’t-Miss Indies: What to Watch in October

Special announcement: as a special culinary bonus, all ten of this month’s Don’t-Miss Indies are, in fact, pumpkin spiced. Go ahead and lick your laptop or smartphone glass to confirm. No? Hm. Looks like that WordPress update hasn’t pushed through yet. Regardless, the spirit of Autumnal renewal (picaresque decay?) presently fills the October air, heralding the onset of Awards Season and its bountiful horn full of cinematic goodies. Starting here…

Silent Night Trailer Teases John Woo’s Dialogue-Free Action Epic
Image
Action legend John Woo's new film, Silent Night, is a dialogue-free action movie that follows a grieving father seeking revenge for his son's death in the underworld. The lack of dialogue in Silent Night allows the visuals, music, and action to convey the story and emotions of the characters. Lead star Joel Kinnaman sees the absence of dialogue as a challenge that requires him to rely on his acting skills and portray emotions solely through his eyes and actions.

Seminal movie director John Woo is back in the first trailer for his dialogue-free action outing, Silent Night. Coming courtesy of Lionsgate, Silent Night is all set to be led by The Suicide Squad star Joel Kinnaman, with the movie all about action as it takes a dialogue-free approach to the story of a grieving father who goes into the underworld to avenge his young son's death. Check out the...

John Woo's Silent Night Trailer Teases The Dialogue-Free Christmas Action Movie
Image
If you're wondering why the last 20 years has felt like something was missing, it's because John Woo hasn't given us a Hollywood action flick since 2003's "Paycheck." The legendary Chinese filmmaker is responsible for some of the greatest films of all time and remains the patron saint of Gun Fu. Woo has been continuing to make films in China, with his most recent, 2017's "Manhunt" a return to form in the same vein as "The Killer." But if you've been missing heroic Hollywood bloodshed like "Face/Off" or "Hard Target," now is the time to rejoice as Woo is back with "Silent Night," a dialogue-free Christmas action film starring Joel Kinnaman of "The Killing," "Suicide Squad," and "For All Mankind" fame. This is the perfect time for Woo's return, as films like "Nobody" and the "John Wick" franchise owe their existence to his filmography. In fact, "John Wick" producers Basil Iwanyk...

Shameless Season 11 Episode 12 Review: Father Frank, Full of Grace
William H. Macy, Steve Howey, Cameron Monaghan, Shanola Hampton, Jeremy Allen White, Ethan Cutkosky, and Emma Kenney in Shameless: Nicht ganz nüchtern (2011)
Saying goodbye to Shameless was always going to be tough, but I was oddly ready to end my time watching the Gallaghers by the end of Shameless Season 11 Episode 12.

For a series finale, the first half of the episode didn't feel like it brought much to a close. There wasn't much closure at all when you think about it.

The episode played out more like the series finale of Orange Is the New Black in that life goes on because what can you possibly change for the characters?

Frank's death was inevitable. It's a miracle he awoke after his overdose, but it hit me harder than I thought it would.

If you watch Shameless online, you know Frank has never been an upstanding man. He would trick his family without a second thought, and his suicide letter was pretty telling about the way he thought about everyone in his orbit before his passing.

Shameless Series Finale Review: Father Frank, Full of Grace
William H. Macy, Steve Howey, Cameron Monaghan, Shanola Hampton, Jeremy Allen White, Ethan Cutkosky, and Emma Kenney in Shameless: Nicht ganz nüchtern (2011)
This Shameless review contains spoilers.

Shameless Season 11 Episode 12

“We’re still here. We’re surviving, right?”

Most people would likely not argue that Shameless’s best years are behind it. Showtime, its cable network, even briefly had a reputation for bleeding series dry long after they should have ended. However, even the most egregious examples of this like Weeds, Californication, and Dexter still pale in comparison to Shameless‘s episode count and none of them ever lost their series’ lead. It’s fair to say that Shameless is not as good as when it started or even how it was a few seasons back, but it’s always remained true to itself. It hasn’t resorted to radical time jumps or a revolving door of new premises and locations as a way to inject steroids into a withering corpse.

Shameless set out to depict the flawed lives of a lower-class...
