Krysten Ritter's Orphan Black: Echoes Canceled After One Season
Image
Krysten Ritters Orphan Black spin-off series has been canceled by AMC after just one season. Orphan Black: Echoes was expected to draw strong audience numbers based on the success of the original 2013 series starring Tatiana Maslany. However, the 10-episode season drew mixed reviews, and it seems that it didnt perform well enough to be given a second bite of the cherry, according to Deadline.

Orphan Black ran for five seasons between 2013 and 2017. As well as scoring strong viewership, and awards success for Maslany, who finally won an Emmy at the third time of asking in 2016, the series also holds an impressive 93% Tomatometer score and 92% Popcornmeter approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes. Orphan Black: Echoes, however, did not manage to maintain a similar level of praise, only just clinging to a fresh score of 60% from critics and a lowly 47% score from audiences.

The series picks up the story from Orphan Black with a time jump of 37 years.

Orphan Black: Echoes Showrunner Explains Tatiana Maslany's Absence
Image
Fans of Orphan Black may have been expecting to see a special cameo from star Tatiana Maslany in the follow-up series, Orphan Black: Echoes. Ultimately, Maslany did not appear, but her absence was not for a lack of trying.

Per TVLine, Orphan Black: Echoes showrunner Anna Fishko commented on the lack of Maslany cameos in the new series. Fishko confirmed that Maslany was asked to return as a Leda clone in Echoes, and it would have been more substantial than a brief cameo. It was revealed that there were plans to be featured heavily in one episode toward the end of the season, but scheduling conflicts stood in the way of making that happen. If the series gets renewed by AMC, however, Fishko teased that Maslany could still end up coming back in the potential second season.

Orphan Black: Echoes' Big Twist Makes You See Krysten Ritter's Debut In A Whole New Way
Image
Spoilers are ahead for Orphan Black: Echoes, episode 5, "Do I Know You?"

Lucy is revealed to be a copy of Kira's wife, Eleanor, adding a heartbreaking twist to their relationship. Episode 5 of Orphan Black: Echoes reveals the story that the series' present narrative hinges on, allowing viewers to understand Kira's unethical choices. In hindsight, Eleanor's Alzheimer's and Kira's efforts to thwart the disease makes Lucy's debut in the pilot episode even more devastating.

The fifth episode of Orphan Black: Echoes reveals a major twist that casts Krysten Ritter's first scene in the show's pilot in a whole new and completely devastating light. Created by Anna Fishko, Orphan Black: Echoes is a spinoff-meets-sequel that's set thirty-seven years after the events of John Fawcett and Graeme Manson's five-season hit Orphan Black. The original series, which stars Emmy-winning actor Tatiana Maslany as Orphan Black's 17 clone characters, delves into the ethical quandaries...

Orphan Black: Echoes Is A Perfect Reminder To Check Out This Underrated Franchise Sequel Series From 3 Years Ago
Image
Orphan Black: Echoes picks up 37 years later with new characters Lucy and Jules, though it loosely ties into the original series. Orphan Black: The Next Chapter serves as the definitive sequel in the franchise, focusing on the core clones facing new challenges. While Echoes is a stunning spinoff, The Next Chapter continues the show's legacy, especially since it stars Tatiana Maslany.

As Orphan Black: Echoes season 1 releases weekly on AMC, it's the perfect time to revisit an underrated franchise sequel that debuted three years ago. While Echoes may be the only for-tv Orphan Black sequel, it isn't the only follow-up to the five-season sci-fi thriller about the moral and ethical implications of human cloning. The original show centers on Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany), a troubled young woman who discovers that she's one of many genetically identical human clones. Soon enough, Sarah teams with her clone sisters to take on the...

‘Orphan Black: Echoes’ Trailer: Krysten Ritter Runs from Her Past in Chilling Sci-Fi Spinoff Set in 2052
Image
In an amusingly meta instance of sci-fi imitating sci-fi, “Orphan Black” is getting a futuristic sequel series before anyone has time enough to miss the original. That’s either a big mistake or more of a good thing in a booming genre that could almost always do with more feminist entries.

Set in the year 2052, “Orphan Black: Echoes” stars executive producer Krysten Ritter as an amnesiac woman named Lucy who we meet unraveling the insidious impacts of a mysterious procedure she doesn’t remember having. In a classic streaming age mess-around, the IP extension comes just seven years after the Canadian cult hit became a household name in made-for-tv cloning.

“Set in the near future, ‘Orphan Black: Echoes’ takes a deep dive into the exploration of the scientific manipulation of human existence,” AMC teased in a press release accompanying the show’s trailer on May 9. “Echoes” begins airing weekly June...

New ‘Orphan Black’ Series In Works At AMC
Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black (2013)
Good news for fans of Orphan Black. A new Orphan Black series is in early development at AMC, Deadline has learned.

Temple St. Productions, which produced the original series, is on board to produce the series, which we hear is not a reboot or spinoff, but will be a new story set in the Orphan Black universe.

Orphan Black, which helped put BBC America on the original scripted series map as its first homegrown hit, aired for five seasons. It starred Emmy winner Tatiana Maslany as multiple clones in the Peabody Award-winning series that all started on a train platform. A troubled woman, Beth Childs (Maslany), locked eyes with an unknown identical woman, Sarah Manning (Maslany), before jumping to her death. From that day on, they were inextricably linked to a clone conspiracy that came to rule Sarah’s life. The cast also included Ari Millen, Jordan Gavaris, Maria Doyle Kennedy,...

‘Orphan Black’ Review: Final Season Gets the Fun, Frightening and Feminist Farewell It Deserves
Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black (2013)
“Orphan Black” goes into its final season with nothing to prove.

After all, it followed up its rockiest storyline with the Castor clones with an excellent fourth season, it earned universal critical acclaim, and star Tatiana Maslany landed a well-deserved Emmy for her breakout role. That’s not too shabby for a show with a fierce but small viewership. Because of that, the series is free to do exactly what it wants and does so well: let the sestras lead.

With all the clone hijinks and amazing performances by Maslany, it’s sometimes forgotten that “Orphan Black” is one of the most feminist shows on TV, and not just because most of its main characters are female. From the beginning, the show broke down gender stereotypes and featured women in all of the powerful roles, letting them have complex identities independent of their relationship to men.

Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black (2013)
'Orphan Black' Closing Shop on Clone Club Next Season
Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black (2013)
Twelve hours ago Orphan Black co-creator John Fawcett tweeted "The end is near," which many fans took as a sign of the end of Season 4 but today BBC America announced the big news. Orphan Black will return for Season 5 next year which will also be its last. Clone Club is bound to be shocked by the news. The BBC America series launched to rave critical and fan reviews when it began back in 2013. The series stars Tatiana Maslany as a series of clones in what is not only a technical but tremendous acting achievement. Layers have been peeled back each season revealing more clones for Maslany to master as well as depths of conspiracy and betrayal. The series is fantastic at covering both fantastical as well as real-world science, what it means to be family, sexuality, gender, and more. Co-creators Fawcett and Graeme Manson released a shared statement: “We are excited to deliver an epic conclusion to the tale of Sarah and her clone sisters. The past four seasons have been a phenomenal adventure, and we are eternally grateful to our loyal fans who have loved the twists and thrills of our weird little show. We are thankful to our partners at Temple Street, and to BBC America and Space for their support and giving us the opportunity to end on a high.” “When we embarked upon this journey with John and Graeme, we knew we had something special on our hands, but didn’t imagine how deeply it would resonate with audiences and the worldwide acclaim it would receive. We are truly in awe of Tatiana, who, each season, pulls off the impossible and brings each clone and their unique personalities to life in an extraordinarily captivating way,” said David Fortier and Ivan Schneeberg, Executive Producers of Orphan Black and Co-Presidents of Boat Rocker Studios. “We are so proud of the cast and crew, who will be on this final ride with us as we draw the Orphan Black story to a close, and extremely thankful to our partners at BBC America and Space for their continued support, as well as the legions of fans who have made these five seasons possible." Orphan Black received a Peabody Award in 2014, and Maslany received a 2015 Emmy nomination for Best Actress, two Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Actress, a TCA Award for Individual Achievement, a Young Hollywood Award, a Gracie Award, two Canadian Screen Awards and Golden Globe, SAG and People’s Choice nominations. Here's hoping more wise up to her outstanding talent. While Maslany fills out a significant portion of the cast, she's joined by the talented Jordan Gavaris, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Kristian Bruun, Skyler Wexler, Kevin Hanchard, Ari Millen, Evelyne Brochu and Josh Vokey. I'm gutted to hear next season will be the last, but I'm also thankful the show will be able to go out on its own terms and have time to wrap up the story in a satisfying way. And frankly, it also gives fans time to come to terms with the end, something not a lot of fan-favorite shows get the opportunity to do these days. Temple Street will be producing ten episodes for BBC America (and Space in Canada) for Season 5. Season 4's finale airs tonight, Thursday, June 16th at 10/9c.

"Orphan Black" Season 3 Finale Recap & Review - "History Yet to Be Written"
As the world of "Orphan Black" expanded this season to host a cavalcade of new antagonists, including a male set of clones, the focus remained on Tatiana Maslany and the various female clones she portrayed. This decision was certainly to the benefit of the series which otherwise could have gotten tangled up in its own mythology and easily lost sight of what made the show great in the first place. "Orphan Black" chose to focus much more on the former than the latter and most of the...

Recap & Review: "Orphan Black" Season 3, Episode 6 - "Certain Agony of the Battlefield"
If you picked this week to get on board with "Orphan Black", you picked a good one. In what is easily the best episode of the third season, we get huge stakes, big character shifts, dream sequences, answers to a few mysteries, and an explosion to top it all off. Helena (Tatiana Maslany) gets the least to do in the episode but the decision she comes to is an important one. After abandoning Sarah at the Castor camp last week to ensure her own escape, she makes the only choice she really could and comes back for Sarah. Luckily for Sarah, it's not a moment too soon. Sarah is run through the emotional ringer in this episode and experiences two separate, very intense, dream sequences, each offering dramatic insight into what continues to drive her emotionally. We've started to accept it as a given that Sarah is tenacious and will...

Orphan Black, Season 3, Episode 2, “Transitory Sacrifices of Crisis”

Written by Aubrey Nealon

Directed by John Fawcett

Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on BBC America

After the underwhelming season three premiere, “Transitory Sacrifices of Crisis” is encouraging, moving what appears to be the crucial arc for the season, the introduction of Project Castor and the CastorClones, towards more interesting territory. While the two main CastorClones featured this week remain Bad Moustache Clone and Fauxhawk Clone, they’re given names and briefly, motivation. Seth (Bmc) is sick, a short circuit in his brain causing searing pain and Rudy (Fc) is protective of his brother, certain Seth will be put down if they return to base as they’ve been ordered. It’s not much, but this is far more characterization than Ari Millen has been given to work with either last season or in the season three premiere (aside from Creepy Cult Clone,...
