Thai Musical ‘Dream!’ Lands Distribution Deal as the Thailand Creative Cultural Agency Readies Its Cannes Debut (Exclusive)
Image
Hollywood Thailand has inked a theatrical distribution deal with Commercial Films Siam for “Dream!,” an English-language musical that will hit cinemas across Thailand and the Southeast Asia region in December.

The production, directed by Paul Spurrier, marks the first Thai musical in over 50 years and is the first Thai film produced entirely in English. The project spent five years in development, six months in workshops and casting, and nine months filming across eight Thai provinces.

The musical features 10-year-old Amata “Manao” Masmalai in her breakout role as Lek, a young girl on a magical journey across Thailand to find a new family.

“We auditioned more than 200 young actors for the role of Lek,” said producer David Cluck. “What we found in Manao was something rare — honesty, emotional depth and natural musicality. She anchors the film with extraordinary grace.”

The film features an original orchestral score by Mickey Wongsathapornpat, played by the Siam Sinfonietta Youth Orchestra,...

Nick Cheung and Ethan Juan in Go for Broke (2024)
Film Review: Go for Broke (2024) by Marc Ma
Nick Cheung and Ethan Juan in Go for Broke (2024)
While the films we see from Mainland China in festivals mostly follow arthouse social/family drama paths, the ones we see outside of the circuit, mostly in various streamers and occasionally in distribution, are almost always of the crime/action variety and quite frequently, of dubious quality. “Go For Broke”, a Chinese/Hong Kong production by Marc Ma, checks both these last two boxes.

Ryan Gosling's Brutal 'Only God Forgives' is Streaming Now on Peacock
Image
Watching Ryan Gosling in Only God Forgives will quickly wash away all the fuzzy bright-pink memories of the actor singing Im Just Ken in Barbie, and now director Nicolas Winding Refn's critically panned 2013 action film is available to stream on Peacock. Loaded with some of the most brutal action scenes ever included in a film, Only God Forgives is a wonderfully evocative sensory experience, in large part thanks to its unforgettably bright and colorful cinematography.

For those who havent seen the movie, Julian (Gosling) runs a Thai boxing club in the bowels of Bangkok, but he is secretly a drug dealer working alongside his brother, Billy (Tom Burke), for their ruthless mother, who is portrayed by the Oscar-nominated Kristin Scott Thomas. After Billy savagely murders an underage prostitute, a veteran police lieutenant named Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm) allows the girls grieving father to take his revenge, which ends in Billy being justifiably murdered.

‘Art of Eight Limbs’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Sahajak Boonthanakit, Nicholas Hammond, Ludi Lin, Vithaya Pansringarm, Suradet Dongthaisong | Written by H. Daniel Gross, Ryan C. Jaeger, Louis Spiegler | Directed by Robert Grasmere

No, Art of Eight Limbs isn’t about an octopus that can paint portraits. It’s the latest knockoff of Enter the Dragon, a film that came out fifty-one years ago and still hasn’t been equalled despite a near-endless stream of films utilizing its mix of international espionage, crime, and martial arts tournaments.

Somewhere in Myanmar, a pair of Russian agents arrive at the encampment of General Thiha looking to buy some Vx Nerve Gas. They show they have the cash, and Thiha’s men show them the gas is the real thing by killing the town drunk as they watch. The CIA are quite familiar with The General and aren’t surprised to find out he’s involved. They alert Nick Buckley, one...

Ludi Lin in Art of Eight Limbs (2024)
Mortal Kombat’s Ludi Lin infiltrates a martial arts tournament in the trailer for Art of Eight Limbs, which is now available on Digital
Ludi Lin in Art of Eight Limbs (2024)
Tiger Style Media is partnering with Paramount‘s Republic Pictures for old-school-style martial arts double feature releases. The first two of the four films released this month are Art of Eight Limbs and The Lockdown. Art of Eight Limbs stars Ludi Lin, who plays Liu Kang in 2021’s Mortal Kombat and the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2. The trailer will likely give viewers some déjà vu as the plot of infiltrating a martial arts tournament led by a criminal comes straight from Bruce Lee’s famous film Enter the Dragon. However, mix it in with some Muay Thai action and it’s a cocktail for some martial arts mayhem.

The official synopsis reads,

“In this action-packed thriller from a producer of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Ludi Lin stars as a CIA data analyst and part-time kickboxer. Sent on a mission to Myanmar, he must infiltrate a martial arts tournament...

Image
"We look forward to seeing you fight." Republic Pictures via Paramount has unveiled the official trailer for Art of Eight Limbs - the title is just another term for Muay Thai Boxing. The martial arts action movie is playing in select theaters now before it's on VOD later this month. A small release that we've barely heard about. Four canisters of deadly Vx nerve gas have fallen into the hands of an arms dealer in Myanmar. A CIA data analyst goes undercover to infiltrate a martial arts tournament that masks an auction of the deadly nerve gas, where he finds himself as the last hope against a time-ticking global threat. Can he pull off a win and save the world? Chinese-Canadian actor Ludi Lin (who played Liu Kang in the recent 2021 Mortal Kombat movie) stars as the CIA analyst. ‘Kitty the Killer’ Review
Image
Stars: Ploypailin Thangprapaporn, Denkhun Ngamnet, Somchai Kemglad, Nara Aniwat, Sutina Laoamnuaichai, Vithaya Pansringarm, Keetapat Pongrue | Written by Sorawi Alapach, Teerat Vanavongtanate | Directed by Lee Thongkham

I can’t say I have a vast knowledge, or much knowledge at all of Thai action films, but I was excited to check this latest one out – Kitty the Killer.

Now, of course, action movies have never gone away. They’ve been around forever but it feels like ever since John Wick, the revenge action film has been more popular than ever, and therefore, more and more are getting made. And Kitty the Killer has some similarities with John Wick and plenty of other popular action movies.

There is a revenge story here (although no dog this time), and there is a ‘Guardian’ of the killer (or killers) – another thing that has been popularized lately, see Killing Eve, The Kingsman, etc., and there are plenty of fight scenes.

11 Years Later: The Horrific Cycles of Violence in ‘Only God Forgives’ Starring Ryan Gosling
Image
Traditionally, movie theater walkouts are usually associated with the horror genre, with infamous cases ranging from 1973’s The Exorcist (particularly during the crucifix masturbation scene) and even Lars Von Trier’s controversial serial killer memoir, The House That Jack Built.

That being said, there are exceptions to this rule, as some movies manage to terrorize audiences into leaving the theater regardless of genre. One memorable example of this is Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2013 revenge thriller Only God Forgives, a film so brutal and inaccessible that quite a few critics ended up treating it like a snuff film from hell back when it was first released. However, I’ve come to learn that horror fans have a knack for seeing beyond the blood and guts when judging the value of a story, and that’s why I’d like to make a case for Winding’s near-impenetrable experiment as an excellent horror-adjacent experience.

Nassim Lyes
Mayhem! Review: Xavier Gens’s Revenge-Fueled Action Thriller Packs a Generic Punch
Nassim Lyes
The original title for Xavier Gens’s Mayhem! was Farang, a word that describes the main character’s status in Thailand. A martial artist and ex-con, Sam (Nassim Lyes) is also a foreigner, and a Westerner at that, having fled his native France. The title change is understandable, meant to reach the broader audience that might take interest in the film’s bloody revenge story, though it risks setting the wrong expectations. After all, long stretches of Mayhem! pass with little in the way of actual mayhem, especially in its first hour.

The film, written by Gens and Magali Rossito, initially focuses on Sam’s daily life after he’s released on day parole and does an honest day’s work at a construction site. But trouble soon finds Sam, and after a brief chase and scuffle that leaves one man dead, Mayhem! essentially hits reset and jumps forward five years.

Film Review: Kitty The Killer (2023) by Lee Thongkham
Image
As we have mentioned many times, the epicenter of Asian action movies has long since moved from Hong Kong towards the Asean countries. Thai Lee Thongkham proves the fact once more with “Kitty the Killer”, a movie that implements the whole girls-with-weapons concept through an approach that also includes much comedy and a certain level of sensualism.

Kitty The Killer is screening at New York Asian Film Festival

The Agency is a secret society formed by a clan of men known as the Guardians, who have trained girls as assassins, in order for their killings to retain balance in the world. The girl assassins are all codenamed Kitty and they stay in the shadows, working in all parts of society, as schoolgirls, housewives, store and office clerks and everything in between. Essentially, they hide in plain sight until their Guardian calls them to do their killing. As the movie starts,...

The Cave (2005)
Ron Howard's Thai Cave Rescue Movie, Thirteen Lives, Is Coming To Theaters And Streaming In August
The Cave (2005)
At this point, it feels like there have already been 13 movies made about the 2018 Thai cave rescue, with "The Cave," "The Rescue," and now Ron Howard's "Thirteen Lives" flooding the market — not unlike the cave system where 12 boys and their soccer coach were once trapped and in need of rescue. "Thirteen Lives," however, boasts what is perhaps the most impressive cast list, including but not limited to Colin Farrell, Viggo Mortensen, Joel Edgerton, and Vithaya Pansringarm (the man who put the "God" in Nicolas Winding Refn's "Only God Forgives.")

"Thirteen Lives" was originally on the calendar for April 2022,...

Film Review: The Last Executioner (2014) by Tom Waller
Image
After his feature “Mindfulness and Murder” (2011), Thai director Tom Waller found his next project in the form of an obituary in a local newspaper. The announcement was about the death of Chavoret Jaruboon, something of a celebrity in Waller’s home country, since he was the last executioner carrying out death sentences via firing squad. When Thailand’s government abolished death by firing squad in 2003, Jaruboon also resigned. Since his formal appointment to the position in 1984, he had been responsible for 55 executions, all of which were carried out with him shooting the prisoner with a mounted machine gun. In the years until his death, he was a regular guest on TV shows and wrote books about his time as executioner.

Interestingly, the study of former executioners such as Jaruboon provides many noteworthy aspects for the discussion about the necessity of capital punishment in general. In an article about Albert Pierrepoint,...

Die letzten Amerikaner (1981)
Official US Trailer for Jungle Action Thriller 'The Prey' from Cambodia
Die letzten Amerikaner (1981)
"Now I am the tiger, and you are the prey." Dark Star Pictures has released the official US trailer for an action thriller titled The Prey, set in Cambodia, made by an Italian filmmaker (who has lived and worked in both London and Cambodia for nearly a decade). This originally premiered in 2018 at the Busan Film Festival, and also played at the London Film Festival, and at Fantasia last year. After years of tracking down international criminals, a trip to a remote jungle prison will force undercover Chinese cop Xin to become human prey to fight for his freedom - and to save his own life. Starring newcomer Gu Shangwei as Xin, along with Vithaya Pansringarm, Byron Bishop, Sahajak Boonthanakit, Nophand Boonyai, and Rous Mony. This looks badass! Yes, it's the same action thriller formula we've seen before – the hunted becomes the hunter of the bad guys – but it still looks pretty cool.

Film Review: The Last Executioner (2014) by Tom Waller
The films depicts the story of Chavoret, starting in the 60’s, when he was a guitar player in a rock n roll band, to the woman he met and fall in love with, and to the family he had with her, and the job he got in the prison in order to support them. Then, his initial transfer to the death squad, although as an assistant and not an executioner yet, and his final appointment as main executioner, particularly due to his family’s financial problems, since this line of work included a raise of 2000 baht. Lastly, his discharge from the prison, the books he wrote and his efforts to find solace from the guilt he suffered from the 55 executions he performed, to his death due to cancer.

In his tumultuous life as correctional officer, four are the events that stand out, with the first three being...

Tokyo Film Review: ‘Motel Acacia’
Bradley Liew
“Motel Acacia” takes place in America, but not any version of America that Americans will recognize. “Re-elect Roberts!” announces a garish campaign billboard bearing the face of a generic white politician. “We are great again!” Well, it’s easy to guess who that’s referring to and to extrapolate what alternate reality “Motel Acacia” has in mind. This is America as seen from abroad, America as a scary place where ugly white racists don’t just build walls to keep undocumented aliens out; they sacrifice oblivious immigrants to a menacing tree demon.

A what? Tree demons aren’t really a thing in the United States, but they’re a fertile part of Filipino folklore, and given that “Motel Acacia” is actually an Asian co-production from Philippines-based director Bradley Liew (“Singing in Graveyards”), that explains how such a monster would find its way into a movie set in the Northern U.

Film Review: Samui Song (2017) by Pen-ek Ratanaruang
Pen-ek Ratanaruang is a name already recognized and respected inside Asian cinema culture. His filmography has gone from less to more, and lately, his level has remained at a very appreciable level. Samui Song is the new film that he directs after “Headshot” from 2011, and “Samui Song” maintains the good stylized quality that film had. It has been 6 years of patient waiting for us to see a new movie of his, but to be honest, it was worth it.

“Samui Song” screened at San Diego Asian Film Festival

Pen-ek Ratanaruang is sometimes known for mixing different genres, like in “6ixtynin9” or in Last “Life in the Universe”, where he mixes drama with comedy. Here, Pen-ek Ratanaruang is more focused and tells the story in a stylized noirish way with some thriller elements, as it occurred with his previous film “Headshot”.

Exclusive: Fledgling UK firm Lightbulb Film Distribution has picked up Busan and London Film Festival survival-thriller The Prey, which has been described as Cambodia’s first $1M-budgeted action movie.

Lightbulb acquired the foreign-language title last week from Raven Banner at their first market, the Efm in Berlin. Set in the Cambodian jungle, the well-received genre pic is writer-director Jimmy Henderson’s follow-up to Jailbreak, Netflix’s first Cambodian acquisition.

Gu Shang Wei and Vithaya Pansringarm (Only God Forgives) lead cast with fight choreography handled by Lucy and Doctor Strange stunt performer Jean-Paul Ly. In The Prey, undercover Chinese cop Xin is on a secret international mission when a surprise raid puts him in a remote jungle prison where the visitors are wealthy thrill seekers and prisoners are pawns in a high stakes game of human hunting human.

Film Review: The Prey (2018) by Jimmy Henderson
Jimmy Henderson, the man who brought us the exuberant “Jailbreak” is back with “The Prey”, a movie that – as an old advert used to claim – “it does what it says on the tin”; it has in facts all the ingredients of the classic action movie that the fans of the genre expect. “The Prey” had its World Premiere at Busan International Film Festival, was screened at the BFI London Film Festival and is now doing the Festival run and it is expected to have a good commercial future life.

Newcomer Gu Shang Wei plays Xin, an undercover Interpol operative who is investigating a phone scam that is spreading in China and seems to be based in Phnom Penh. When Cambodian Police raids the operation’s headquarter and arrest everybody, Xin has to go along with it in order to keep his cover. The bunch of arrested criminals are sent to...
