He started the 2009 Formula One season as a test driver for Renault, but was given his race debut at the European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain, following the departure of Nelson Piquet Jr. from the team. He went on to race for Renault until the end of the 2009 Formula One season, appearing in a total of seven Grands Prix.

Between 2016 and 2020, he was a full-time driver for the Haas F1 Team. His best result with the team was finishing in fourth place at the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix.

Between 2012 and 2015, he was a full-time driver for Lotus in Formula One. During his time with the team, he was on the podium a total of ten times, having finished in third place on eight occasions and in second place on two occasions. He also recorded one fastest lap at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix.

Sunday, November 29, 2020. The Sakhir Circuit in Bahrain. On the third corner of the first lap, Romain Grosjean's car veered off the track after colliding with Russian Daniil Kvyat and hit the safety barriers at 220 km/h.

After 27 seconds, Grosjean clambered out with the fire roaring behind him and his race helmet singed. He was conscious and stable and then taken by helicopter to a military hospital.

Late on Sunday, F1 posted a video of a smiling Grosjean speaking from his hospital bed.

"Just wanted to say I am OK," Grosjean said. "Thank you very much for all the messages."

Romain Grosjean suffered burns to the back sides of both hands. He was subsequently transported by helicopter to the Bahrain Defence Force Hospital for further assessment and treatment. He was discharged from hospital after three days, on December 2, 2020.
