"The Ballad of Serenity" was used by NASA as the wake-up song for McArthur's husband, astronaut Bob Behnken (Robert L. Behnken), and the other crew-members of STS-130 (a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station) on February 12, 2010. This was the theme song for the TV show Firefly: Der Aufbruch der Serenity (2002), written by Joss Whedon and performed by Sonny Rhodes.

McArthur has flown one Space Shuttle mission, STS-125. She is famous as the last person to handle the Hubble Space Telescope.
