Is a certified Paramedic/Firefighter working for Walker County Fire Department as a Medic in Georgia. He used to work for the Detroit Fire Department prior to relocating. (2011)

(As of 2012) His father Stephen J. Kovalcik works as the fire chief for the city of Greenville, South Carolina and formerly worked as the fire chief for the city of Sterling Heights, Michigan. His mother Virginia Kovalcik is the police lieutenant with the Shelby Township Police Department (promoted from sergeant, she is the township's first female lieutenant). His older brother Chris Kovalcik, also a hockey player, is a firefighter/paramedic with the Asheville, NC Fire Department.

Graduated from Armada High School in Armada, Michigan in 2002.

Graduated from the same small-town high school as famed sports announcer Dick Enberg.

Has played hockey most all of his life. Played for the Ontario Hockey League's Saginaw Spirit, Junior A hockey with the Detroit Belle Tire Lightning out of Fraser, amateur hockey for the Fraser Falcons, the Michigan Jaguars, and Junior B hockey for Motor City Chiefs, among others. He was playing junior hockey in Boston for the American Hockey League's Lowell Lock Monsters when the movie opportunity for Miracle - Das Wunder von Lake Placid (2004) came up in the fall of 2002. Kovalcik began skating when he was 3 years old and played hockey when he was 5 years old in the novice program out of Fraser.

Played a year of junior high football in Armada, Michigan. In high school he was on the equestrian team and the powder puff cheerleading team.

Son-in-law of Khalood Bojanowski and Jerry Bojanowski. Brother-in-law of Jojo Bojanowski.
