When originally cast as "Todd Manning" on Liebe, Lüge, Leidenschaft (1968), he was only supposed to play a minor, supporting character in the infamous fraternity gang rape storyline. The character was supposed to be written out at the conclusion of that storyline. However, his portrayal quickly won over fans, who wrote to the producers asking that his character be kept on the show, permanently. As a result, he was offered a longterm contract and the character of "Todd Manning" became one of the series' major arch villains.

One of the things I really like about Franco is he really is different when talking to different characters in his life. Todd on _One Life to Live_ did this to some extent, too. When Todd would talk to Viki (Erika Slezak) he wouldn't leave a dangling participle. Then when Todd was speaking with Dorian (Robin Strasser) it was this sort of snarky thing, and then between Blair (Kassie Wesley DePaiva) and Tea (Florencia Lozano) there were adjustments. I think in that way it's like real life. People don't talk to their grandmother in the same way they talk to their friends, or whomever.
