Black Doves season 1 ending, explained, and how it sets up season 2
Image
The Black Doves season 1 finale, “In the Bleak Midwinter,” ties up all the loose storylines in a neat bow on top of a Christmas present.

After Sam (Ben Whishaw) is kidnapped by the Clarks at the end of episode 5, he wakes up in the same room as Kai-Min Chen (Isabella Wei) and Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy). The Clarks are holding them hostage. Helen Webb (Keira Knightley) has a plan, though, because she’s seen the tape and knows what really happened!

Who killed the Chinese Ambassador?

On the tape that Jason Davies (Andrew Koji) hid for Helen Webb to find in the jewelry, it reveals that Trent Clark, the son and heir to the Clark family, who are basically shadow-controlling the British government, killed Ambassador Chen (Andy Cheung) on accident. He was at Kai-Ming’s apartment to bring her heroin, but the Chinse ambassador confronted Trent about supplying his daughter. In the scuffle,...

Bagman: supernatural horror film starring Sam Claflin gets a digital and VOD release this Friday
Image
Two years ago, it was announced that Sam Claflin, who may be best known for playing Oswald Mosley on Peaky Blinders, Finnick Odair in the Hunger Games franchise, and Billy Dunne in Daisy Jones & the Six, had signed on to star in the supernatural thriller Bagman, from Hunger Games‘ home studio Lionsgate. The finished film received a theatrical release at the end of September, but it seems that few movie-goers noticed. Maybe Bagman will catch more attention now that horror fans will have the chance to watch it in their comfort of their own homes, as the film is set to receive a digital and VOD release this Friday, October 18th. It’s available for pre-order on Amazon, going for the price of $14.99.

Colm McCarthy, who previously directed The Girl With All the Gifts, the Krypton pilot, and the entirety of Peaky Blinders season 2, took the helm of Bagman,...

10 Deleted Scenes That Fix Confusing Movie Moments
Image
Nine times out of ten, if a director has chosen to delete a specific scene from the film they're working on, it's for good reason. Other times, it comes at a cost. Pacing is a critical component of any movie, but sometimes, to increase the pace, filmmakers drop scenes that provide essential explanations for events transpiring in the film. It's in cases like these that deleting scenes can lead to confusing movie moments.

Thankfully, there's a solution to that in today's marketplace. It's called the home media market. True, deleted scenes aren't experiencing quite the Renaissance today that they did earlier this century. However, for those parties interested enough in searching them out, they're still often readily available in one form or another, and watching them might clarify some of your favorite films. Here are ten instances where deleted scenes went a long way toward explaining the otherwise unexplainable.

Sigourney Weaver 'Wasn't Thrilled about All the Guns' in the Aliens Script
Image
Aliens saw Ellen Ripley's transformation from Nostromo survivor to the franchise's battleborne heroine. Sigourney Weaver recalled she was so eager to film that sequel, until she read director James Cameron's script.

Ridley Scott's Alien offered the perfect premise for a sci-fi horror flick: a rogue Xenomorph stalks space truckers in cramped spaces. That film ended with one survivor flushing out the Xenomorph out of the airlock without firing a single bullet. Aliens cemented Ellen Ripley as one of pop culture's strongest protagonists; the sequel saw her team up with battle-tested marines to fend off hordes of Xenomorphs, this time with military-grade weapons. While speaking at a Venice Film Festival masterclass, Weaver revealed (via Variety) that the inclusion of guns was her main objection to the Aliens script. She reconsidered after director James Cameron revealed her character arc in the movie.

Aliens Expanded
Image
Alright, sweethearts, you heard the man and you know the drill. There have been plenty of documentaries about Aliens before, as anyone who has owned the beloved 1986 sci-fi sequel from James Cameron on its various formats can attest (some hardcore fans still insist the 1992 LaserDisc Special Edition release has never been bettered). But there has never been any documentary quite as extensive, expansive or exhaustive as Aliens Expanded, a title that lives heartily up to its name due to a near-five-hour runtime — not quite as long as an unusually long hypersleep, but not far off. It comes from writer-director Ian Nathan, who has literally written the book on the film.

As with 2019’s Memory: The Origins Of Alien, about Ridley Scott’s original film (also featuring contributions from Nathan), this aims to be the definitive take on a definitive genre classic. With a runtime like that, it is fair to...

The Star Trek Next Generation Character That Was Originally Drastically Different
Image
Yaphet Kotto as Jean-Luc Picard? Wesley Snipes as Geordi? Jenny Agutter as Dr. Crusher?

Gene Roddenberry considered all of these actors for Star Trek: The Next Generation before casting Patrick Stewart, LeVar Burton, and Gates McFadden. However, the most surprising alternate idea for a Tng character involved Tasha Yar, the ill-fated security chief aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.

The Tale of Macha Hernandez

The Tng series bible, released before the show premiered as a guide for writers and actors, describes Yar in terms similar, if not completely one-to-one, with the character we know from the series. “Born at a ‘failed’ Earth colony of renegades and other violent undesirables, she escaped to Earth in her teens and discovered Starfleet, which she still ‘worships’ today as the complete opposite of all the ugliness she once knew,” the description explains.

Portrayed by Denise Crosby, Tasha Yar did show great loyalty to Picard and the Enterprise,...

Dune's Sardaukar & 9 Other Deadly Armies From Science Fiction Movies
Image
Science fiction houses some of the most creative and unique concepts and designs in film, especially when it comes to the idea of war and conquest. Whether it's alien invasion movies or space exploration that takes heroes to new worlds, many films and franchises showcase mighty, advanced militaries, both alien and futurist humans. These can make for some fun and exciting sci-fi war stories and often bring out the best in special effects and CGI.

Considering how many sci-fi franchises make use of themes like dictatorship, rebellion, and exploration, advanced militaries are key to survival in these universes. While some are elite units of grand, heroic armies, others are shown to be the foot soldiers of tyrants and invaders. All the same, these are a popular staple of science fiction, with the likes of Dennis Villeneuve's Dune recently showing some of the best of these fictitious fighting forces.

Alien: Romulus' Timeline Is Perfectly Placed To Finally Explain A 38-Year-Old Mystery
Image
Alien: Romulus may resolve a major franchise mystery by explaining Gorman's use of the term "Xenomorph" in Aliens. The upcoming movie could clarify that "Xenomorph" is a catch-all term for aliens, dispelling confusion among fans. While focusing on survival horror, Alien: Romulus has the opportunity to address this long-standing misunderstanding within the series.

While Alien: Romulus has a plot of its own to focus on, the movie’s place in the series timeline means it could answer one major franchise mystery. 2024’s upcoming Alien: Romulus is almost guaranteed to annoy some longtime fans of the sci-fi horror franchise since the Alien movies are hardly known for their consistent lore. Both 2004’s Alien Vs Predator and 2012’s Prometheus offered conflicting, contradictory backstories for the original movie’s Weyland-Yutani Corporation, and there is no guarantee that Alien: Romulus will confirm either of these origin stories as part of the franchise’s knotty,...

Famous Movie Sequels That Changed Genres
Image
Movie sequels are expected to be more of the same. This was especially true when it came to the sequel's genre. If the preceding movie was a romantic-comedy, it stands to reason that any follow-ups would stick to the rom-com formula. This unspoken rule didn't stop certain movie sequels from changing genres.

A sequel changing genres was either a sign of its franchise's desperation to stay relevant and chase trends, or a genuine attempt by the filmmakers to do something new and daring. Not all sequels that changed genre succeed, but they still deserve credit and attention for coming up with the most unexpected ideas.

Spoilers ahead.

‘The Son’ (2022) Movie Review: Not an action film
Image
The Sonis a drama movie written and directed by Florian Zeller, based on his own play.. Starring Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern.

Excellent acting in an “actor’s film”.

Storyline

A successful attorney, with a new wife and a baby, accepts taking care of his adolescent son from a previous marriage after his ex wife tells him she is worried about the boy´s random behavior.

Movie Review El Hijo (2022)

Excellent, well directed, good screenplay… one really had to have a bad day, a truly bad day to want to face two hours of skin deep feelings with the emotional problems of a son, worried parents and a drama that is great for actors to act in, but you will be wanting to be (truly) wanting to watch this.

Around here we usually say that we judge a movie, not the subject and we try to focus on the artistic virtues of the art,...

‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Review (Netflix) – Second Opinion
Image
Stars: Sarah Yarkin, Elsie Fisher, Mark Burnham, Jacob Latimore, Moe Dunford, Olwen Fouere, Jessica Allain, Nell Hudson, Alice Krige, William Hope, Jolyon Coy, Sam Douglas, John Larroquette | Written by Chris Thomas Devlin | Directed by David Blue Garcia

The original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a movie that was based on the build-up of tension, until it became unbearable for the audience, with an explosion of violence that many don’t forget. Made in 1974, it has had sequels, been remade in many forms through the years and Netflix are the latest to give an attempt to revamp the series with a follow up to the original. The question is, does it live up to the original?

After 50 years since the events of the first film, a group of young friends decide to buy up the town Texas town near where Leatherface’s attacks took place. When some of the locals fight...

‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Review (Netflix)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is an odd one. There’s about four different timelines despite not that many movies, and although the quality has actually been good (for the most part), none have really got close to the sheer sense of terror that the first movie delivered. As always though, I was very much excited to see the latest movie.

This one is a direct sequel to the original movie and not linked to any other sequels that came before it. A new timeline altogether set in present-day almost fifty years after the original as Leatherface is once again disrupted by a new group of young friends and is soon getting to...

Mark Burnham in Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
He's Back! Full Trailer for Netflix's 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' Movie
Mark Burnham in Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
"50 years I've been waiting for this night... just to see him again." Netflix has fired up the gnarly official trailer for their new Texas Chain Saw Massacre film. It's officially titled Texas Chainsaw Massacre and will be streaming on Netflix starting this February. After nearly 50 years of hiding, Leatherface returns to terrorize a group of idealistic young friends that accidentally disrupt his carefully shielded world in a remote Texas town. Much like last year's Ghostbusters, this skips everything else and it plays as a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper's original 1974 Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Leatherface only gets angry when people come home. This sequel stars Elsie Fisher, Sarah Yarkin, Mark Burnham, Moe Dunford, Olwen Fouéré, Alice Krige, Jacob Latimore, Nell Hudson, Jessica Allain, Sam Douglas, William Hope, Jolyon Coy. Damn this looks brutal! The bus scene is going to be insane. Lots of blood and gore in here - watch out.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre Producer Fede Alvarez Kills Off Those Bad Test Screening Rumors
Image
Don't Breathe and Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez was busy promoting the upcoming Don't Breathe 2, directed by the original's co-writer Rodo Sayagues when he was asked about the supposedly terrible test screening of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot. The film picks up from where Tobe Hooper's iconic 1974 slasher, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, left. Texas Chainsaw Massacre has had a tumultuous production, with directors Andy and Ryan Tohill (The Dig) quitting after just one week into filming over creative differences with Legendary Pictures. David Blue Garcia (Tejano) was then hired to take over the directorial duties. The previously shot footage was discarded, and Garcia had to start from scratch. Although, Chris Thomas Devlin's original script is still used.

The troublesome production combined with a disgruntled netizen who attended an early test screening has resulted in rumors raising doubts about Texas Chainsaw Massacre's quality. Fede Alvarez, who recently attended https://www.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre Reboot Gets an R-Rating and an Official Title
Image
The upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot has officially been rated R. While this news is not exactly surprising, given the gritty nature of the horrific crimes committed by Leatherface and his family in every installment of the series, it can still be considered good news for fans concerned that it just might have gone PG-13. Per the MPAA, the movie is officially rated R for "strong bloody horror violence and gore, and language."

This news also seems to confirm that the official title for the reboot/sequel is simply Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It's a similar approach to the Halloween franchise, which titled the 2018 movie as simply Halloween as well, even though it served as a sequel to the original movie. That is also going to be the case with the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which will only acknowledge the first TCM movie and none of the other sequels. Like Halloween,...

New Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movie Is a Legacy Sequel That Follows Old Man Leatherface
Image
Leatherface is finally coming back this year and horror fans have reason to be excited. As reported by https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3656136/texas-chainsaw-massacre-fede-alvarez-confirms-new-movie-sequel-old-man-leatherface-exclusive/|Bloody Disgusting, producer Fede Alvarez has confirmed that the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot is actually a direct sequel to the original 1974 horror classic directed by Tobe Hooper. As Alravez tells it, this time around we are going to see what old man Leatherface looks like.

Horror fans will know Fede Alvarez from his work on movies such as Don't Breathe and 2013's Evil Dead. The filmmaker recently spoke with the outlet and, while he couldn't dive too deep into specifics, explained that they have indeed made a direct sequel. This means they are likely ignoring the events of previous sequels in the franchise, much like what was done with 2018's Halloween. And that worked out pretty well. Here's what Alvarez had to say about it.

"It is a direct sequel,...

How The Sandman Audible Series Is Helping Neil Gaiman Shape the Netflix TV Show
Image
Author and comic book creator Neil Gaiman is celebrating the adaptation of his classic graphic novel series The Sandman into a critically acclaimed audible series with a formidable cast of voice talent, including James McAvoy, Michael Sheen, Riz Ahmed, Justin Vivian Bond, Arthur Darvill, Kat Dennings, Taron Egerton, William Hope, Josie Lawrence, Miriam Margolyes, Samantha Morton, Bebe Neuwirth, and Andy Serkis. In an interview with Collider, Gaiman revealed that the response to the audio series, which hews very closely to the source material, allows him to test what changes can and should be made to the narrative for the upcoming live-action Netflix adaptation of The Sandman.

"In a scientific experiment, this would be the control [group]. It's like, "Okay, here's the one where we're not going to change anything. We're going to adapt it, but we're going to keep it the same." This allows Allan Heinberg and David Goyer and I...

The Sandman Audible Original Review: the Dreaming Comes to Audiobook
Neil Gaiman at an event for Der Sternwanderer (2007)
Screen adaptations of Neil Gaiman’s celebrated graphic novels have been teased since the 90s, with various talent attached but none as yet managing to materialize in physical form. While a TV series for Netflix is in pre-production with Wonder Woman writer Allan Heinberg showrunning and David Goyer and Gaiman exec producing, an audio book has arrived from Audible boasting super-high production values and a starry cast. More like a radio play than a straight up reading of the text, this adaptation works surprisingly well and stays very faithful to the books, adding in physical descriptions of characters where necessary.

The narrator for Audible’s The Sandman is Gaiman himself, describing his creations so listeners can imagine their own panels – it means the series works as well for people who have never read the graphic novels and conjure their own visions of The Endless, as people who know the visuals...

The Sandman Audible Cast Gets High Praise from Creator Neil Gaiman
Image
The Sandman remains one of seminal author Neil Gaiman's best works, and with the Audible take on the story now available, Gaiman has been discussing the portrayal of the ethereal main character, voiced in the project by Split and X-Men: First Class star James McAvoy.

"We had to start recording before we had a Morpheus. But once we did cast James, he wasn't available until I think March, so we were going to record everything without him and then put him in. Then that ended up getting delayed, because the day they were meant to go into the studio, the world went into lockdown. So we wound up having to get recording equipment over to his place, and Dirk had to direct him over Zoom. Having said that, all these episodes that I'd heard in rough form with other people playing Morpheus hadn't worked."

Neil Gaiman then went...
