The only director of a Best Picture winner to never have been nominated for an Oscar, for Menschen im Hotel (1932). Additionally, Goulding was the only director of a Best Picture winner to never receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Director in its 85-year history, until Ben Affleck for Argo (2012). Since then, Peter Farrelly and Sian Heder have directed Green Book: Eine besondere Freundschaft (2018) and CODA (2021) respectively, both of which went on to win Best Picture without either filmmaker ever receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Director.

Directed 9 actors to Oscar nominations: Gloria Swanson (Best Actress, The Trespasser (1929)), Nancy Carroll (Best Actress, The Devil's Holiday (1930)), Fay Bainter (Best Actress, White Banners (1938)), Bette Davis (Best Actress, Opfer einer großen Liebe (1939)), Mary Astor (Best Supporting Actress, Vertauschtes Glück (1941)), Joan Fontaine (Best Actress, Jungfräuliche Liebe (1943)), Anne Baxter (Best Supporting Actress, Auf Messers Schneide (1946)), Clifton Webb (Best Supporting Actor, Auf Messers Schneide (1946)), and Edmund Gwenn (Best Supporting Actor, Mister 880 (1950)).
