In 1963 Bernard enlisted in the French navy as a trainee engineer, graduating first in his class one year later. During his naval service, Giraudeau served on helicopter carrier Jeanne d'Arc from 1964-1965, and again from 1965-1966. Subsequently, Giraudeau served on the frigate Duquesne and on the conventional aircraft carrier Clemenceau before leaving the navy to begin his career as an actor.

Bernard met actress Anny Duperey while acting in the same play. Giraudeau and Duperey married and had two children: son Gaël and daughter Sara.

Bernard and wife Anny Duperey acted together in 5 productions, _La nuit des Césars (1976 TV Series)_, Der Superboß (1982), Amnesty International - Schreiben gegen das Vergessen (1991), Meurtres à domicile (1982), and _La face de l'ogre (1988 TV Movie)_.

Bernard enlisted as a French Navy sailor in 1963, at the age of 15, and completed two around the world cruises before his service ended.

Bernard and wife Anny Duperey were supporters of Lionel Jospin for the 2002 French presidential campaign. Jospin lost to Jacques Chirac and retired from politics.
