He served with the British Royal Artillery in India and as a nurse with the US army during the Spanish-American War. After returning to civilian life, he moved to Iowa and tried his hand at farming. He soon found the stage more appealing to him than the cornfields of Iowa and returned to the theater.

After the advent of talkies, his poor health (hemophilia) forced him to cut back on his work in motion pictures. In 1931 he disappeared from his Hollywood home and was found some 36 hours later, wandering in a confused state near Ventura, CA.

Began his professional life as a barrister. Entered films as an actor with Vitagraph in 1914.

In 1926, The Los Angeles Examiner selected him to appear as a member of the 'All American Screen Players Team,' along with Estelle Taylor, Monte Blue, Norma Talmadge, Ricardo Cortez, Eleanor Boardman, Marion Davies, Patsy Ruth Miller, Sydney Chaplin, Ronald Colman, Noah Beery, George Beranger, Julia Faye, William Boyd, Edmund Lowe and Victor McLaglen.
