Mary is a descendant of the writer, William Faulkner.

Mary is also a writer and painter.

One of Mary Faulkner's mentors as a young actress was fellow Arkansan Mary Steenburgen who encouraged Mary to study acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in NYC. Mary took Steenburgen's advice and when she was 20 years old spent the summer in New York City studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse. She later studied acting at Playhouse West in Los Angeles when she was 25.

Mary performed improvisational and sketch comedy at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles.

In 2002, Mary appeared in friend Brad Paisley's music video "Wish You'd Stay" as a bride. The wedding footage used in the video is from her actual wedding.
