Leading French producer Michael Gentile’s Paris-based outfit The Film is about to start shooting Julie Delpy’s next directorial outing, “The Barbarians,” and Laurence Arné’s “Les Hennedricks” starring Dany Boon.

Delpy’s comeback to French filmmaking since “Lolo,” “The Barbarians” is a satirical comedy unfolding in a small town in Brittany which is preparing to welcome Ukrainian refugees after voting unanimously to greet them in exchange for subsidies from the government. But instead of seeing Ukrainians come into town, they see Syrian refugees, causing some tensions among locals and testing their liberal beliefs. Delpy will star in the film opposite Sandrine Kiberlain (“Mademoiselle Chambon”), Laurent Lafitte (“Elle”) and Ziad Bakri (“The Weekend Away”), India Hair (“Angry Annie”), Mathieu Demy (“The Bureau”) and Delpy’s father Albert Delpy.

It would be a massive understatement to call the works of filmmaker Quentin Dupieux “weird.” After all, this is the man who made a movie about a malevolent tire as his big breakthrough. Rubber certainly put him on the map, but interestingly, his latest film Deerskin is what may finally endear him to a larger crowd. To be sure, this is still a very odd flick, but it’s powered by a strong lead performance, a low-key charm, and a slow burn to its unusual nature. Filmmaker and actress Julie Delpy knows what people expect of her. The star and co-writer of Richard Linklater’s “Before” trilogy and the director of such bubbly romantic dramedies as “2 Days in Paris” and its sequel “2 Days in New York” may have made her acting debut for no less than Jean-Luc Godard, but she’s been kept in a certain kind of industry bubble for the last two decades.

She’s done with that now. For her latest directorial outing, passion project “My Zoe,” Delpy moves away from romances and chatty comedies into something both wholly unexpected and more personal than anything else she’s ever made. When Delpy describes the feature, a thriller debuting in Tiff’s filmmaker-centric Platform section this week, she uses the kind of descriptors that wouldn’t fit anything else she’s made during her three-decade-long career. Words like “harsh,” “unforgiving,” and “not very kind.

Five years after Julie Delpy introduced her neurotic character Marion and her oddball family in 2 Days in Paris, the actress/writer/director reunites several of the same characters in the romantic comedy 2 Days in New York, opening in Austin this week.

Unfortunately Delpy's real-life mother Marie Pillet, who played Marion's mom in the first film, passed away in 2009. However, Delpy's father Albert Delpy returns as Marion's eccentric father Jeannot, with Alexia Landeau along as Marion's boyfriend-stealing sister Rose. Ex-boyfriend Manu (Alexandre Nahon) also makes an appearance, but he's less suave and more buffoonish than in the first film, and even fat family cat Jean-Luc makes a cameo.

I really wanted to like this movie.

I like Julie Delpy.

I like that she took an unexpected Johnny Depp-like career turn upon first becoming successful: she decided not to let her stunning looks lull her into a guaranteed successful, complacent career.

She moved to a foreign country, mastered English, and didn’t just say she was going to direct, she really did direct and wrote a successful screenplay (Before Sunset). And she proved a triple threat: writing directing, and starring in 2 Days in Paris which was a nicely paced, accurately funny depiction of the Franco-American culture clash.

Understandably, I had high expectations for her follow up. Hence, the fall was steep.

Chicago – Julie Delpy’s “2 Days in New York” is an amenable screwball comedy with some jokes that definitely fall flat and some awkward emotional beats in the final act but a likable tone that allows for easy passage over the screenwriting rough spots. Ms. Delpy is still charming and co-star Chris Rock is more effective here than he typically is in film. It’s just a likable little movie without pretension to be anything more.

This week, a film that was a wonderful surprise rather than the big disappointment that was “Moonrise Kingdom.” I went to see Julie Delpy’s “2 Days in New York” on a whim: the employee at the ticket desk at the Odeon Covent Garden actually tried to talk me out of it. She thought I would prefer “Jeff Who Lives At Home”: although she hadn’t seen it, she had seen “2 Days in New York” and didn’t like it. A batch of five new movie posters arrived over the last couple of days that I never got around to posting so I thought I'd take the time now to share. The films included Lionsgate's new dark comic actioner Dredd starring Karl Urban, the unnecessary Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D, Julie Delpy's 2 Days in New York, the "found footage" cop drama End of Watch and, finally, a poster for the 3-D re-release of Finding Nemo. It might sound like hyperbole, but it's true: writer, actress and director Julie Delpy deserves to be among the first names that come to mind in the comedy-of-manners canon, among the likes of Woody Allen, Whit Stillman and Noah Baumbach. An unlikely sequel to the already underrated "2 Days In Paris," Delpy's latest, "2 Days In New York," picks up with her hyper-neurotic Marion character who has broken up with Jack (Adam Goldberg from the first film) and now lives in New York with their child and her new American boyfriend Mingus (Chris Rock). But when her eccentric father (played by Albert Delpy, her real-life father), her sister Rose and an ex-boyfriend decide to come visit and stay in the couple's cramped New York apartment, their cultural and language barriers make for a hilarious clash of personalities and personal spaces.

If there’s one thing I learned from Julie Delpy’s wonderfully eccentric dramedy, it’s that Parisians are as neurotic as New Yorkers. Who knew? Director Delpy follows up on her 2007 2 Days in Paris (which I have not seen, but will now make a point of hunting down) with the continuing misadventures of her Marion, living in the Big Apple with her young son... and sharing quarters with new American boyfriend Mingus (Chris Rock [Grown Ups], who has never been this sweetly appealing onscreen) and his young daughter. Their pleasantly chaotic household is thrown into unpleasant upheaval for a couple of days when her French family comes to visit just as she’s also finishing the preparations for a major exhibition of her photography. You cannot take any of it at face value: Her father, for one, is just a notch below an outrageous stereotype, and several notches above just plain outrageousness.

Having run out of unsuspecting Americans to prank, Sacha Baron Cohen takes the conventional fish-out-of-water route this time, as his Arab tyrant comes to terms with western democracy. But if the story plays it safe, the comedy treads a risky line between lampooning Islamophobia and fuelling it. The high gag rate, animated performance and general broad-spectrum offensiveness help him get away with murder, and worse.

Julie Delpy wrote 2 Days In New York because it struck her, looking around, that most Hollywood romcoms were hilariously awful in their depictions of women her age. That is, women in their late 30s and early 40s. The Anistons and Barrymores who, on screen at least, are still "having the problems of a 25-year-old. Like, should I date him, should I not date him? Should I have sex with him but tell him I don't like him? Ok. I mean, I have friends who are still single, but even they don't ask themselves those kind of questions. Taking place a few years after “2 Days in Paris,” with the events from that film summed up in a puppet show, Jack (played Adam Goldberg) is gone and Marion (Delpy) lives in New York with her boyfriend Mingus (Chris Rock) and their respective children from previous relationships. Both lead artistic New York lives as Marion is about to open a photo exhibit and Mingus is writing for the Village Voice along with hosting two radio shows. Marion's father Jeannot (Albert Delpy) and sister Rose (Alexia Landeau) are coming to New York to spend time as a family following the death of Marion's mother. The promise of foreign customs and crazy old men is fulfilled the second we meet Dad, locked in customs and removing the sausages he strapped to his chest.

The 26th-29th April sees the Sundance London Film and Music festival hit the O2 Arena, which sees the festival – renowned for its programme of independent film – take place in the UK for the first time in its 34-year history.

As a Sundance newbie, I am excited to attend the indie festival. I’ve always heard so many great things about it, especially as a lot of great films initially got noticed at previous Sundance fests (Napoleon Dynamite, Clerks, Reservoir Dogs).

Looking at the line-up, I expect the cream of the crop of forthcoming independent releases.

The Sundance Institute and The O2 announced today the programme of 14 narrative and documentary feature films that will make their UK premieres at the inaugural Sundance London festival, taking place at The O2 from 26-29 April. These films premiered in January at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah – the premier independent film festival in the United States.

“I welcome the opportunity to see how people in the UK experience these films,” said Robert Redford, President and Founder of Sundance Institute. “While they are American productions they speak to universal experiences and global challenges.”

He went on to add, “Sundance London also is the perfect opportunity to continue our long-time commitment to growing a broader international community around new voices and new perspectives.”

Incase you’re not familiar with Sundance, it is a spin-off from the big Us event which takes place in Park City, Utah at the beginning of the year. In a nutshell, Sundance is a four-day festival that will include film screenings, live music performances, discussions, panels and other public cultural programming will be held 26 – 29 April, 2012 at The O2 in London. Robert Redford is due to open the festival with a discussion connecting film and music. ‘An Evening with Robert Redford and T Bone Burnett’ will be moderated by author and screenwriter Nick Hornby.

Magnolia picked up Julie Delpy's 2 Days in New York for domestic distribution, but the film, in which Delpy co-stars opposite Chris Rock, will hit French theaters on March 28 after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival in January. As a result, an international teaser trailer from France has arrived giving you a brief look at the romantic dramedy. The film is a follow-up to Delpy's 2007 feature 2 Days in Paris in which she co-starred opposite Adam Goldberg. That film was actually pretty good, if not a little over-bearing considering there is such a thing as too much Adam Goldberg. Actress/director Julie Delpy turned the set of her movie 2 Days In New York into a family affair by casting her real-life dad as her onscreen father.

In the movie, Delpy's character Marion is paid a visit by her sister Rose and eccentric father Jeannot in the Big Apple, who clash when they meet her boyfriend Marcus, played by funnyman Chris Rock.

And the French beauty admits it didn't take too long to get into character since she got to team up with her theatre director dad Albert Delpy in the film.

But the actress has warned fans not to expect too many similarities, telling New York Magazine, "My dad isn’t like that in real life. It’s a character, he’s not like that at all...Totally fictional from A to Z."...

As most of us anticipated, Magnolia ended up being one of the big players at this year’s Sundance, snatching up films — with stars big, small, and somewhere in-between — left and right. Don’t believe me? Well, the past 24 hours alone have seen them make three acquisitions that could all be in discussion by the end of this year. If you catch my drift.

Park City, Ut – The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures announced today they have acquired North American rights to 2 Days In New York, a delightful and sophisticated follow-up to her 2007 hit, 2 Days in Paris. 2 Days In New York stars Delpy, Chris Rock, Delpy’s real life father Albert Delpy, and was produced by Christophe Mazodier. A witty comedy about relationships, art, and clashing cultures, 2 Days In New York picks up again with Marion (Delpy), now living in New York City with her attentive boyfriend Mingus (Rock), each with a child from a previous relationship. Their idyllic lifestyle is turned upside-down when Marion’s eccentric father comes to stay for a few days, along with Marion’s oversexed sister (Alexia Landeau) and her sleazy boyfriend (Alex Nahon)—and proceed to drive Mingus absolutely crazy. Magnolia will release the film through its Ultra VOD program later this year, with a robust theatrical release in major markets.

Julie Delpy made quite the impression on me in her seminal Sundance film Before Sunrise and its sequel, Before Sunset. She's back at this year's festival, this time as a writer/director of a different sequel, 2 Days in New York. Following the events of 2 Days in Paris, Delpy plays Marion, a single mom who has moved in with her boyfriend Mingus (Chris Rock), who has a child of his own from a previous relationship. Marion is a photographer, and her exhibition is set to happen in the same week her father Jeannot (played by Delpy's real father, Albert Delpy) and sister Rose (Alexia Landeau, who co-wrote this film) fly in to visit from France. Also in tow is Manu (Alexandre Nahon), Rose's impetuous dolt of a boyfriend who used to date Marion.

While the movie features some of the hallmarks of the Before... series, I didn't like this one nearly as much.

It's a sequel, of course, to 2 Days in Paris, but Salon's Andrew O'Hehir, introducing an interview with Julie Delpy and Chris Rock, assures us that "it really doesn't matter whether you've seen the earlier movie. Jack, the American boyfriend played by Adam Goldberg in 2 Days in Paris, has evidently moved on (leaving behind a young son), and Delpy's character, Marion, is now shacking up with a Village Voice journalist and radio host named Mingus, who has a daughter of his own. (Rock even says the character is based on the prominent African-American journalists Nelson George and Elvis Mitchell.) Rock gets some decent laugh lines, but he isn't doing improv or stand-up material here — although he does deliver two monologues to a cardboard cutout of Barack Obama."
