He attended UCLA, where he staged a theater department talent show featuring Carol Burnett, a freshman who had partnered with him in an acting-class scene.

In 1956, after Army service, he joined the staff of Globe Photos, eventually becoming West Coast bureau chief. He oversaw photography of celebrities at movie premieres, awards ceremonies, parties and nightclubs.
