Had a surprise number one hit record in the UK in 1975 with "Whispering Grass", a duet with his It Ain't Half Hot Mum (1974) co-star Don Estelle.

In 1984 he auditioned, unsuccessfully, to be the voice of the Speaking Clock in the UK; Brian Cobby got the job.

Worked as a teacher and a miner before becoming an actor in 1961.
