Her trademark role was as the voice of Aurora in the Disney Classic "Sleeping Beauty".

Living in her hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee, she is involved with Child Help, which is an organization for abused children. She also continues to sing in her home and works with young musical students.

A character in Kevin Lima's Verwünscht (2007) is named Mary Ilene Caselotti. This is a reference to Mary Costa, Ilene Woods (who voiced the title character in Cinderella (1950)), and Adriana Caselotti (who voiced the title character in Schneewittchen und die sieben Zwerge (1937)).

She has appeared in two films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: Dornröschen und der Prinz (1959) & Einer flog über das Kuckucksnest (1975).

Is a lifelong Democrat.

She was awarded the 2020 National Medal of the Arts in Washington D.C. She is an opera singer.

Of all the operatic roles I’ve performed, Sleeping Beauty is special to me because it’s the one that keeps me close to young people.
