- Received the 1957 'Supporting or Featured Actor (Dramatic)' Tony Award for his performance in Graham Greene's "The Potting Shed".
- English-born character actor who played figures of authority. Easily his best performance was as the hate-driven former Confederate Major Tetley, leading the lynch mob in 'The Ox-Bow Incident' (1943).
- Was in four Oscar Best Picture nominees: Menschen im Hotel (1932), The White Parade (1934), Ritt zum Ox-Bow (1943) and Die Schlangengrube (1948), with only the first of these winning.
- Survived by his widow, Ruth, and a son, Richard.
