Born William Laurence Cumpanas of Croatian descent, Bill Cable (aka Stoner) was a standout football player for North Hollywood High School as an offensive tackle, and became a varsity captain in his senior year. He continued playing football after enrolling at the University of Nevada, but eventually stopped after a serious head injury. In October 1996, Cable was involved in a motorcycle accident in Laurel Canyon in which he sustained a fractured vertebra in his neck, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. Cable died of these injuries on March 7, 1998, at the age of 51. His funeral was attended by Paul Reubens (Pee-wee Herman). Cable was cremated. The William Laurence Cumpanas Fund was established after his death, supporting the Croatian Sons CFU Lodge 170 in Merrillville, Indiana.

Of Croatian descent, Bill Cable was born William Cumpanas and used the nickname Stoner during his modeling career in the 1970s when he had a non-sex role in the Rip Colt short, "Cooling It" in 1973. Paralyzed from the chest down in an October 1996 motorcycle accident, "His mother Violet stayed by his side, at times alternat(ely) full of despair, hope, resignation and faith... (providing) a sense of stability and undying love for her son... she described how Billy worried about her in spite of his own grave condition and the attending pride in which she so often spoke of him, her "little Dalmatinac." Stoner succumbed to his injuries on March 7, 1998 and The William L. Cumpanas Memorial Fund, with an initial endowment sum of $10,000, was established within the ranks of the Croatian Fraternal Union Scholarship Foundation, Inc.

Following his 1996 motorcycle accident, Cassandra Peterson (AKA Elvira) provided financial support for his care.
