Best known for his role as Dr. Watson (opposite Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes) in Sherlock Holmes (1984) which portrayed the character as an intelligent and dynamic man as the stories depict. He was replaced by Edward Hardwicke in Die Wiederkehr von Sherlock Holmes (1986) and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1994).

Father of actor Tom Burke, with whom he appeared on Inspector Lynley (2001) episode, In Pursuit of the Proper Sinner (2004).

Son-in-law of Arthur Calder-Marshall.
