He spent a lot of time in Europe doing crime films and television in the 1950's and 1960's playing stock American characters, cops usually, in particular England, on shows like No Hiding Place and The Saint. And it was in Europe where he met and worked with Orson Welles to play the lead in Mr Arkadin (Confidential Report).

Best known as the lead character in Orson Welles's experimental Film Noir "Mr. Arkadin".

Supporting actor and vocalist of American parentage, who plied his trade in Britain.

He left the acting profession for a number of years, but returned to it in the late 1970s.
