Channel 4 & Australia’s Sbs Board ‘Titanic In Colour’ Doc From Woodcut Media
Image
Exclusive: The sinking of the Titanic continues to fascinate filmmakers and audiences, and a new two-part doc about the tragic ship has pre-sold into the UK and Australia.

Channel 4 and Sbs have both boarded Titanic in Colour, which comes from the British indie behind World’s Most Evil Killers and Mandela, My Dad and Me maker Woodcut Media.

The doc will feature little-known stories such as the impact of the Titanic’s sinking in 1912 on the UK port city of Southampton and the last trauma of those who survived. It will feature interviews with relatives of passengers.

Through extensive research and colorization techniques, the doc will also bring to life the lavish interiors of the ship, artefacts and clothing from passengers and many of the larger-than-life people who built, sailed on and ultimately survived the sinking.

The Titanic set off on its maiden voyage from the UK to New York City,...

Channel 4, BBC Select Pick Up Woodcut Media’s Factual Series on Royal Etiquette
Image
Woodcut Media have sold their upcoming series “A Royal Guide To” to U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 and U.S. streaming service BBC Select.

Viewers will learn how to hold their tea cups and perfect the “Duchess slant” in the new series, which looks at some of the more obscure (and sometimes bizarre) protocols and etiquette followed by the British royal family. These include christening royal babies in holy water imported from the River Jordan and princes being required to wear shorts until the age of eight.

The series will also examine the historical origins of some of these customs and why they continue to endure.

The 6-part series, which will air in the U.K. later this year, uses archive footage, including from Getty’s royal archives, and insider interviews. BBC Select has not yet announced a U.S. release date.

Woodcut Media’s Kate Beal, Sarah Freethy and...

Image
BBC One renews “Staged”; Tencent strikes European deals; U.K. Producers’ Guild launches diversity plan; India’s PVR adds former IMAX chief; and Channel 4 orders royal documentary series.

U.K. broadcaster BBC has ordered a second season of comedy “Staged,” created by Simon Evans and Phin Glynn, and starring Michael Sheen (“Good Omens”) and David Tennant (“Des”) from Infinity Hill and Gcb Films.

Shot during lockdown, the first season starred Tennant and Sheen as two actors whose West End play has been put on hold due to Covid-19, but whose director has persuaded them to carry on rehearsing online. The new series sees the pair attempt to navigate their new normal at home with their increasingly exasperated families, while simultaneously trying to tackle the world of virtual Hollywood.

Following on from the surprise appearances in season one of Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson, this season will have more celebrity guests.

Tonight we finally reached the first live show of The X Factor 2015 - so it was a pretty important episode tonight to say the least!

We saw some spectacular performances, as well as that Adele rendition - yes, we're trying to block it out too. Plus there was Rita's hair, which drew a fair few comparisons.

Digital Spy was watching along, and rounded up the best Twitter reactions of the evening.

A lot of people were missing Dermot:

Don't get me wrong I love olly and caroline but I miss dermot. He was so smooth when it came to presenting. #XFactor

James Coburn, Steve McQueen, Tom Adams, and William Russell in Gesprengte Ketten (1963)
Oscar Winners’ Bump Will Come Via DVD This Year – Not the Box Office
James Coburn, Steve McQueen, Tom Adams, and William Russell in Gesprengte Ketten (1963)
The Oscar-winning movies will get a bump this year, but it will come via DVD and downloads more than at the box office. That’s in part because this year’s Academy Awards are coming about a month later than normal — pushed to stay clear of the Winter Olympics. By now, many of the Best Picture nominees are already out on DVD, or will be soon. “This actually might work a little better for the studios, at least for some titles,” said Tom Adams, a home entertainment analyst at Ihs, told TheWrap, “because their return on a DVD purchase is better than.

Brad Pitt in World War Z (2013)
Would You Pay $50 For A Movie Ticket?
Brad Pitt in World War Z (2013)
New York — So this was the deal: For $50, you got to see Brad Pitt's hotly anticipated zombie thriller "World War Z" before all your friends. You also got 3D glasses to keep, popcorn and sodas, a poster, the DVD when it comes out, and an intimate dinner with Brad.

Just kidding! No dinner with Brad.

But hundreds of fans did pay $50 for the other stuff last week in a small-scale marketing experiment in five theaters – and the studio, Paramount Pictures, says it worked well. With all the recent talk about future movie ticket prices climbing into the stratosphere, is it a harbinger of things to come?

Before you scoff, it's worth noting that premium pricing happens all the time: in Broadway theaters, where you could get second-row seats for Tom Hanks in "Lucky Guy" this week if you paid $300 a pop, or at concerts, where you could pay well over $1,000 for,...

Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone (1961)
How A Broadcast TV Channel Cornered The Cable Movie Market
Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone (1961)
New York -- Want to watch "Avatar" or "The Avengers," the two highest-grossing movies so far in the 21st century, on TV? How about "The Social Network," "Ted," "Snow White and the Huntsman," "The Amazing Spider-Man" or any of the "Twilight" or "Transformer" movies?

Unless you subscribe to a premium movie channel like HBO or Showtime, you have only one option: FX.

Over the past decade, the basic cable network, founded in 1994 by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., has pursued an ambitious strategy of movie acquisitions, effectively cornering the market for the TV broadcast of blockbuster movies. FX bought the rights to a dozen of the 20 top-grossing movies of 2009, 10 of the top 20 of 2010, 12 of the top 20 of 2011 and 11 of the top 20 so far in 2012.

Film is by far the biggest programming category on FX, occupying 57 percent of the channel's broadcasting time, according to a recent report by Ihs Screen Digest.

Christian Bale in The Dark Knight (2008)
Stream Works: Hollywood Searches for a Netflix Alternative
Christian Bale in The Dark Knight (2008)
Hollywood is pushing back against the streaming behemoth Netflix, placing new restrictions on its content and dabbling with new alternatives like Facebook. In the past week, two premium channels restricted the online rental service’s immediate access to current TV programming. During the same period, Warner Bros. expanded its Facebook streaming test to five additional titles, even though apparently less than 100,000 people rented “The Dark Knight” during the studio’s inaugural test. “What you’re starting to see is just another aspect of a general pullback that has been going on,” said Tom Adams,...

Doctor Who complete reviews: Warriors Of The Deep
If The Five Doctors was the perfect party, then Warriors Of The Deep is the bleary morning after where the whole world's in a spin.

This shouldn't be the case – it's got not one but Two! returning monsters from the Pertwee years. The Silurians and Sea Devils have joined in force to reclaim the planet which they think is rightfully theirs via a futuristic sea base in the near future. Now that sounds like a great story – especially if you're coming to Doctor Who afresh and bought the Beneath The Surface DVD set. What emerges though isn't so much a damp squib, more a floody disaster.

It's telling that this is another season opener written by Johnny Byrne, especially when you consider that Arc Of Infinity was a load of pants – well-made pants admittedly, but still pants. Warriors Of The Deep goes one worse by being badly realised on screen,...
