Although Nykvist is well-known for his distinctive black-and-white cinematography in many of Ingmar Bergman's films such as Persona (1966) and Die Stunde des Wolfs (1968), his two Oscars victories (Schreie und Flüstern (1972) and Fanny und Alexander (1982)) and one more nomination (Die unerträgliche Leichtigkeit des Seins (1988)) were all for colour films. The latter includes minor black-and-white scenes.
