He began to credit himself as Paul Wesley in 2005 because he thought his birthname was too hard to pronounce. He asked his family's permission before changing it.

In 2021 Paul Wesley co-founded a bourbon company with his ex-costar of the Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder. The brand is Brother's Bond Bourbon. The brand has won multiple awards & high praise reviews from publications like Rolling Stone Magazine, Cigar & Spirits Magazine (cover 2 years in a row), Food and Beverage Magazine, The Spirit Business, and The Hollywood Reporter just to name a few. The company uses regenerative agriculture to give back to the planet & make their bourbon.

Paul's passion was playing hockey until he was about 14 years old and was pushed into performing. Paul became interested in acting when enrolled in a summer arts program in third grade.

Paul attended Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, New Jersey and Marlboro High School for a period during his high school years.
