Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000) – The Test of Time
Image
About a year ago we looked at The Blair Witch Project through the lens of a quarter century’s worth of passing time. While the popularity and success of that movie is undeniable, regardless of how you feel about it, the legacy is somewhat more complicated. It has 4 video games with varying degrees of quality, some cool toys courtesy of McFarlane, more lore than the average 21st century kids cartoon show, a hell of a mocumentary, and a couple sequels. While 2016’s Blair Witch does a good job of mixing in the found footage aspect while paying homage to its predecessor, Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows, which released the year following the first one, is mostly maligned both behind the scenes and with its final product. While it made a decent amount of money and IMDb claims that it has a cult following now, just how does the movie hold up 25 years later?...

Why These Horror Movies Had Huge Gaps Between Critics & Audiences On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
For most people, horror is an acquired taste. The genre explores the darkest, most disturbing parts of ourselves and our psyches, making for stories that can range from grotesque and gory to just downright disturbing. For critics, that may not necessarily be what they look for in a movie, but for horror fans, it is the precise reason they adore the genre. As such, in the ongoing (and endlessly tiresome) culture war between critics and audiences, horror tends to be more divisive than not. Despite the site's questionable operations and easily-manipulated review system, Rotten Tomatoes continues to be the battleground in which this war is waged.

Each case is different: Some films have ardent fandoms behind them, others garner cult followings over time, and some premiere to critical fanfare but simply do not age with audiences. Whatever the case may be, these 12 horror films feature significant enough gaps in their...

'Really, Really Saved Me': Christina Ricci Says Hollywood Rescued Her From 'Not Very Nice' Childhood
Image
Acclaimed actor Christina Ricci is now among the many stars immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame following a decorated film and TV career. Not only has acting given the Yellowjackets star success and fame, but she credits the industry for saving her from a tumultuous childhood.

Speaking with Variety about her Walk of Fame induction, which she called a "profoundly meaningful" moment in her decades-long career, Ricci opened up about her love for acting and what it did for her professionally and personally. Ricci admitted that becoming a film star gave her renewed purpose after a "not very nice" childhood with a family she didn't feel safe around. Having landed key roles in Mermaids, Casper and The Addams Family as a young actor, she showed she could handle the spotlight from an early age. However, she had to overcome the toxicity of home life to deliver on-screen.

'That's Terrifying': Yellowjackets Stars on Callie & Jeff's Season 3 Drama
Image
The following contains spoilers for Yellowjackets Season 3, Episode 4, "12 Angry Girls and 1 Drunk Travis," now streaming on Paramount+ and debuting Sunday, March 1 on Showtime.

Yellowjackets' present storyline features many of the survivors as adults, navigating seemingly normal life while still emotionally burdened by their wrongdoings in the woods. Shauna Shipman experiences the most change from her younger to adult self. And when she begins to unleash her teenage, feral side in the present day, it's her husband Jeff Sadecki and daughter Callie Sadecki that are affected. Jeff remains supportive of Shauna even in her worst moments, while Shauna's relationship with Callie is a bumpier road.

In the Yellowjackets Season 3 premiere, Callie spills pig guts on her high school classmates -- an incident resembling the same rage teenage Shauna had. It's possible that Shauna has unknowingly created a miniature version of herself in Callie, while Jeff is far from the type to...

Yellowjackets has proven that no one is safe with the tragic death of adult Natalie (Juliette Lewis) at the end of Season 2. But in Season 3, Episode 4, entitled “12 Angry Girls and 1 Drunk Travis,” there was another shocking death, and it was one no one saw coming.

V/H/S/2 (2013) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
When V/H/S/2 hit screens in 2013, it emerged as a bold sequel to the original V/H/S, offering another dose of found-footage horror anthology goodness. Like its predecessor, V/H/S/2 thrives on its unique structure: a collection of shorts tied together by an overarching narrative, each directed by some of the most inventive voices in modern horror. With its mix of supernatural scares, visceral gore, and relentless tension, the film aimed to up the ante from the first installment. But does every segment deliver? Let’s revisit V/H/S/2, dissect its stories, and determine which segments truly shine and which fall short.

Before we dive into the segments, let’s discuss a little backstory. The first film achieved success both critically and financially. So naturally there was demand for a sequel. Similar to it’s predecessor, V/H/S/2 is an anthology film. Multiple directors were brought on board to create standalone short films. The shorts...

That 'Yellowjackets' Bonus Episode Would've Made Season 3 a Lot Better
Image
Quick Links'Yellowjackets' Season 3 Skips Over a Pivotal Time PeriodAnother Direction a 'Yellowjackets' Bonus Episode Could GoIs the 'Yellowjackets' Bonus Episode Still Happening?

Fans of Yellowjackets might recall that the second season was an odd nine episodes long, one fewer than the first season and the currently airing third season, both of which run 10 episodes. Following the Season 2 finale, fans were promised a bonus episode that would air between Season 2 and 3 to tie things together. Months passed, then more than a year, almost two, and nothing ever came to fruition. Season 3 debuted, and that bonus episode seems to be lost in television purgatory.

There’s still no confirmation that the mysterious bonus episode will ever see the light of day, and with Season 3 now underway, it’s becoming more and more unlikely. However, it was needed. And in one sense, could potentially still happen.

'Yellowjackets' Season 3 Premiere Breaks Series Record for Showtime
Image
Yellowjackets made its long-awaited return to Paramount+ with Showtime last week, and Season 3 is already smashing records set by its predecessor. Debuting in 2021, the series tells the tale of a New Jersey high school girls' soccer team that crashed in the Canadian wilderness in 1996, and how – for better or worse – that event helped shape their adult lives 25 years later.

Per Variety, the Season 3 premiere of Yellowjackets amassed over 2 million views across Paramount+ and Showtime last weekend, which is a big increase over the Season 2 premiere back in 2023. According to Paramount Global, the first episode, "It Girl," achieved the series' highest streaming viewership ever, boasting an impressive 58% increase over Season 2's "Friends, Romans, Countrymen."

There are many factors in play as to what went into the huge viewership increase for Yellowjackets Season 3, including the fact that when Season 2 debuted, Showtime was on its own back then before being absorbed into Paramount...

Yellowjackets Creators Address 1 Character's Possible Return After Shocking Season 2 Death
Image
Yellowjackets has cemented itself as must-watch TV over the course of its first two critically-acclaimed seasons. This is partly due to its writers’ willingness to kill off major characters in shocking fashion – but that doesn't necessarily mean they’re gone for good.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, series creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson discussed the events of Season 2 –which included cannibalism, and the death of one of the show's main characters. Interestingly, they have not had many opportunities to do so, since upon Yellowjackets' Season 2 release, the Writer's Guild of America went on strike. This caught Lyle and Nickerson on the first day of their Season 3 writers' room, which had to stop immediately, but it also meant that they couldn't engage in promotion of the series. "It was a strange experience to have to quietly watch on the sidelines," explained Lyle.

'Yellowjackets' Season 3 Reviews: Showtime Thriller Returns From the Wilderness
Image
Yellowjackets made its long awaited return to Paramount+ with Showtime today, dropping the first two episodes of Season 3 titled "It Girl" and "Dislocation." After a nearly two-year wait, we finally get to see the fallout of that shocking death in the Season 2 finale, and how it affects the grown up cast going forward. That being said, there's still plenty more to learn from their past, and as the reviews begin to pour in, the question becomes: Was the long wait for Yellowjackets Season 3 worth it?

"Showtime's Yellowjackets returns with more answers, fewer cast members, and fresh dynamics that make it a bloody good start to Season 3," says Megan McLachlan from The Contending. Indeed, there are fewer characters, but there's also the appearance of some new ones this season, like Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank, and Joel McHale, who bring a nice amount of star power to the series following the exit...

'Yellowjackets' Co-Showrunner Says Shocking Season 2 Death Needed To Happen
Image
We're less than two weeks away from the highly-anticipated premiere of Yellowjackets Season 3, but before we get there, co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco is explaining why one of the series' pivotal characters had to die at the end of last season. If you'll recall, the explosive Season 2 finale saw Lisa (Nicole Maines) with a shotgun trained on Juliette Lewis' character of Natalie during Lottie's ritual in the woods. When Misty (Christina Ricci) tries to save the day by injecting Lisa with phenobarbital, Nat jumped in the way and took the shot instead, sacrificing herself and dying.

David Schwimmer Brought His Own Corny Dad Jokes to ‘Goosebumps: The Vanishing,’ Showrunners Say

David Schwimmer brought his own corny dad jokes for his botanist character in “Goosebumps: The Vanishing,” the second season of the Disney+ and Hulu series inspired by R.L. Stine’s iconic stories.

For example, the punny plant joke that makes his teenage kids on the show — Devin (Sam McCarthy) and Cece (Jayden Bartels) — wince the hardest is, “What plant should you watch out for? An ambush.”

Showrunner Rob Letterman told TheWrap in a recent interview, “He did a deep dive on, ‘Ok, botanist. Bad dad jokes. Bad dad plant jokes.'”

Goosebumps The Vanishing TV Review: David Schwimmer leads a fun and scary second season
Image
Plot: Begins with fraternal twins Devin and Cece adjusting to life with their recently divorced dad, Anthony. When the duo discovers a threat stirring, they quickly realize that dark secrets are among them, triggering a chain of events that unravel a profound mystery.

Review: Growing up, I was slightly too old to enjoy Goosebumps. While I was graduating from Christopher Pike novels and R.L. Stine’s Fear Street series to the more mature novels of Stephen King, tons of kids entered the gateway horror of Stine’s fun brand of scary stories to tell in the dark. The anthology series was a hit with kids looking for a good scare, and the big-screen films starring Jack Black amped up the comedy for a big-budget adventure. Disney+ and Hulu’s reboot of the franchise was a successful, scary take on the source material back in 2023, and this year’s sophomore entry is equally good.

The Only Proper Version of 'The Blair Witch Project' Is Nearly Impossible To Watch
Image
The Blair Witch Project, a found-footage horror film written, directed, and edited by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, has become a firm cult classic since its release in 1999. Inspiring filmmakers for decades to come, it made for a lightning-in-a-bottle scenario that will likely never be truly replicated. Starring Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams, the movie follows three film students investigating the local legend of the Blair Witch. Unfortunately, for purists of the genre, viewing The Blair Witch Project in its proper form has been impossible for a long, long time.

Goosebumps: The Vanishing's Blair Witch-Style Episode Teased By Co-Creator & Showrunner
Image
Goosebumps: The Vanishing showrunner Hilary Winston and co-creator Rob Letterman tease an upcoming Blair Witch-style episode. Developed as the second TV show and fourth screen adaptation of the series of enormously popular children's horror novels by R. L. Stine, Goosebumps debuted on Disney+ and Hulu in 2023. The series was developed by Letterman and Nicholas Stoller, and, despite ending season 1 on a cliffhanger, has become an anthology; Goosebumps season 2 will now be known as The Vanishing. It stars David Schwimmer, Jayden Bartels, and Ana Ortiz, among many others, and is set to release on January 10.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Letterman and Winston teased a Goosebumps: The Vanishing episode shot in the style of the cult found-footage horror movie The Blair Witch Project. Discussing their unique approach to filming the season, and their techniques to avoid budgetary constraints, the duo revealed that their limited budget created a need for real-world production value,...

Blair Witch Project Ending Explained: All Your Questions Answered
Image
The Blair Witch Project ending caps off the haunting found-footage movie on a suitable ambiguous and chilling note, but it leaves many questions about what exactly happened. 1999's The Blair Witch Project series was a low-budget independent horror film from co-directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez. The found-footage horror follows three student filmmakers who wander the woods of Burkittsville, Maryland, to investigate the legend of the Blair Witch. In the forests around where the village of Blair once stood, they encounter the Blair Witch — although the movie's Blair Witch monster is never shown in full before the movie ends.

After The Blair Witch Project ending, the trio is never seen again, but a year following their disappearance, the footage they shot is recovered. It's this "real" footage that the movie is made from, and this approach helped spawn further found-footage horrors like Paranormal Activity, Quarantine, and Cloverfield. However, despite the...

10 Best Horror Movies Of The 1990s
Image
The 1990s weren’t the strongest decade for horror movies, but they still gave us some unforgettable classics that ultimately shaped the genre’s future. Struggling to match the creativity of earlier eras, the '90s moved away from the gritty style of the '70s and '80s and tried new approaches. The decade leaned heavily into psychological horror and self-aware storytelling, with standout films like The Silence of the Lambs and Scream redefining the realm of horror.

While there was a fair share of uninspired sequels and repetitive slasher films, the 1990s marked a shift in how audiences experienced fear, giving way to suspense, atmosphere, and clever twists over pure shock value. During the '90s, horror reached more people through mainstream hits, proving it could be both a box office success and win critical praise. Despite its challenges, the era proved to be a key turning point for horror movies,...

Heather Donahue stars as Megan
Heather Donahue in The Blair Witch Project

Few horror films have ever had as much of an impact on audiences, both genre and mainstream, as The Blair Witch Project, the story of three young filmmakers lost in the woods who may or may not fall prey to something supernatural. 25 years on from its first screening, and with a limited edition coming out on Monday (11 November), I caught up with directors Eduárdo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick to ask them why they think it remains firmly rooted in the public consciousness.

“It's a mystery to us!” says Eduardo. “The movie became something that we didn't expect it to become. And you're right: it is crazy that after 25 years, people like you are still interested in talking to us about it. We feel really lucky that we've been a part of it. You know, there's a lot of collaborators that made this movie possible.

Blumhouse's Blair Witch Project: Confirmation & Everything We Know
Image
Blumhouse and Lionsgate are teaming up to produce a new film in the Blair Witch Project franchise, and there are already exciting updates about the upcoming movie. Debuting in 1999, The Blair Witch Project turned Hollywood on its ear when the extremely low-budget indie horror film took the world by storm. The pioneering found footage movie was shot on handheld camcorders and follows a group of young adults as they traverse the Maryland woods in search of the eponymous legend. What made the movie so memorable was that it had audiences guessing about what was real and what was fiction.

Of course, it was all fiction, but The Blair Witch Project quickly became one of the most profitable movies of all time when it earned millions of dollars on a budget that was reportedly below one million. Though the gimmick of found footage wasn't originated by Blair Witch, it helped kick...

The Blair Witch Project creators have not been consulted about the Blumhouse reimagining
Image
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the release of the 1999 hit The Blair Witch Project (watch it Here) and to mark the occasion, Lionsgate announced that they’re developing a reimagining of the film with Blumhouse Productions. Lionsgate and Blumhouse have made a multi-picture pact that will see Blumhouse producing new takes on horror classics from the Lionsgate library, and The Blair Witch Project is the first project on that slate. That announcement was made several months ago, and now, during a conversation with Film Stories, Blair Witch creators Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick let it be known that no one at Lionsgate or Blumhouse has consulted them about the reimagining.

Sanchez and Myrick had their own ideas for how to expand the world of The Blair Witch Project, but Joe Berlinger’s Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 was made without their participation. They later spent years trying...

Blair Witch Project Creators Respond To Lack Of Involvement In Upcoming Reboot: "Studios Are Not Your Friends"
Image
The Blair Witch Project creators Dan Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez have responded to their lack of involvement in the upcoming reboot currently in development. At CinemaCon in April 2024, Blumhouse's Blair Witch Project was announced, aiming to be a "new take" on the franchise. As of writing, no concrete details have been revealed, save for the lack of involvement of Myrick, Sanchez, and everyone else who helped craft the 1999 original found footage horror movie. It's also unclear when the forthcoming horror reboot is going to be released.

Speaking with Film Stories, Myrick and Sanchez expressed disappointment in not being involved with Blumhouse's upcoming Blair Witch Project movie. They explained how they have ideas on how the series could continue, with both calling it "bittersweet" to see the franchise they crafted evolve without them. They also explained how Lionsgate has constantly been making follow-ups that were "moderately successful," but they think their...

Could ‘Terrifier 3’ Be a ‘Halloween’ and ‘Blair Witch Project’ Game Changer? Being Unrated Is a Turning Point
Image
Damien Leone’s “Terrifier 3” (Iconic/Cineverse) grossed about $27 million in the U.S./Canada in its first week. That will make it easily #1, helped by the second-week collapse of “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Warner Bros.), which will end up #4 with around $10 million.

The slasher/horror sequel will ultimately earn a massive profit. With a reported production and marketing cost of around $5 million and additional revenues, “Terrifier 3” investors could easily see profits far exceeding $50 million.

Apart from its cost, other elements leading up to the slasher film’s success are unusual. As with any sleeper hit, its successes will be examined by studios to see if they can be replicated.

If “Terrifier 3” does lead to major changes, it will follow the lead of John Carpenter’s “Halloween” (1978) and Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez’s “The Blair Witch Project” (1999). And not just in terms of its impact on the horror genre.

Bruce Willis Predicted One Of The Biggest Horror Movies Of All Time On The Set Of Pulp Fiction
Image
What does "Pulp Fiction" have to do with low-budget horror movies? Well, the film's $8 million budget might seem like a fairly significant amount of money, but it's not the kind of figure you'd expect for a film starring Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, and Uma Thurman. Of course, at the time those actors weren't the bonafide megastars they'd become, or, in Travolta's case, king of the 0% Rotten Tomatoes score. Still, $8 million is more the kind of budget you'd expect for a mid-range horror movie, so it's impressive Quentin Tarantino managed to make $212 million from his off-beat postmodern pastiche.

That's not the only connection between "Pulp Fiction" and horror, either. Aside from the film's often striking depictions of violence, there's a surprising link between one of its stars and an ultra low-budget horror movie that debuted the same decade as Tarantino's film.

Bruce Willis made "Pulp Fiction" profitable before shooting even began,...

V/H/S – Ranking the 7 Anthology Horror Films
Image
One of the most unique franchises to emerge in the last fifteen years, V/H/S feels like an indefinite horror franchise. After enough of the filmmakers broke through in the mainstream, other emerging voices have been eager to add their names to the franchise. Like Punk Goes Pop or And1 Mixtape for horror, the series has become a scouting ground for the next great horror filmmakers. With the arrival of V/H/S/Beyond, we’re ranking the films of the franchise. Within each, we also do a mini-ranking of the shorts, so keep an eye out for your favorite shorts.

7. V/H/S: Viral (2014)

While there are moments of Viral that stand out to this day, the overall style and stories rarely live up to the premise. Outside of this franchise, some segments would feel like a great little horror entry, but when the footage does not make sense as something that might come from a VHS,...

“There was a certain backlash”: If Not for True Horror Fans, One Complaint about The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield Could’ve Sank Both the Movies
Image
The horror genre has continued to remain a crucial part of the filmmaking industry. Looking back at two of the most iconic films –The Blair Witch Project (1999) and Cloverfield (2008), they had one particular factor in common: both these movies were filmed with found-footage technique.

A still from The Blair Witch Project (1999) | Haxan Films

It is a part of the filmmaking technique where the story is presented as if it was recorded by the characters in the story. Although these movies garnered critical and commercial success, the filmmaking technique ended up troubling audiences, which could have easily sunk their reception.

The Blair Witch Project Made Audiences Sick

Released in 1999, The Blair Witch Project left an indelible mark on the horror genre with its low-budget, found-footage approach. It heavily utilized shaky camerawork to create a sense of realism and fear.

A Ghostly Bones Episode Was Inspired By The Blair Witch Project
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The 1999 summer movie season was one for the history books. It saw the release of the first "Star Wars" film in well over a decade, "Austin Powers" went from VHS success to bonafide blockbuster, and an unknown director named M. Night Shyamalan came out of nowhere to deliver the second-highest grossing title of the year. "The Sixth Sense" would've been that year's definitive work of horror, too, had it not been for "The Blair Witch Project." Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez's shoestring-budgeted phenomenon, which premiered just a few weeks before young Haley Joel Osment saw dead people, was inescapable. Heather Donahue's terrified, teary-eyed confession to her camera in the film instantly became a widely-recognized piece of iconography alongside the movie's maddening final shot, both of which would soon be referenced and parodied in virtually equal measure.
