Father of actress Pamela Simpson (1905-2002).

Lean, white-haired and austere-looking Scottish supporting actor in Hollywood, often seen as servants, lawyers, doctors and clergymen.

Character actor said to have been a favorite of the film star George Arliss. He appeared in some seven of the latter's pictures, among scores of others from 1915 to 1948.

Appeared in seven Best Picture Oscar nominees: Disraeli (1929), Die Rothschilds (1934), David Copperfield (1935), Meuterei auf der Bounty (1935), Unter Piratenflagge (1935), Die Abenteuer des Robin Hood (1938) and Gefundene Jahre (1942). Mutiny on the Bounty won Best Picture of 1935.
