She made her film debut in Satyajit Ray's film Kanchenjungha (1962). Initially, Ray approached famous star Asha Parekh to play the role of Monisha, and she wanted to play the role, but the busy actress couldn't take an entire month off to shoot the film, so she had to turn it down.
