He was the first wrestler to defeat Hulk Hogan via submission. He defeated him via Torture Rack on an episode of "WCW Monday Nitro" (1995) in 1997 to win the World Heavyweight Title his last time.

In 1995, he took a huge pay cut to return to WCW. Steve Borden was the one who made the initial push to bring Luger back. However Eric Bischoff really had no interest in bringing him back but ultimately decided to make a low-ball offer of $125,000 (about one third of what he previously was making with WCW). Unhappy with his status in the WWE, Luger surprisingly accepted the offer. Eric Bischoff soon realized that Luger was vastly underpaid and renegotiated the contract.
