Mother, Mary, is a sex therapist.

Attended the 2001 Oscar party at the FilmHouse in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he was said to have cheered at every opportunity for his nominated film Chocolat... ein kleiner Biss genügt! (2000) by Lasse Hallström.

Both he and his Summer of the Flying Saucer (2008) co-star Robert Sheehan have played a king of France. O'Conor played King Louis XIII of France in Die drei Musketiere (1993) whereas Sheehan played his son King Louis XIV of France in Young Blades (2005).

Received a scholarship to attend NYU Film School.

Only became serious about acting after attending Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.
