- A Canadian cultural icon, he was an actor, writer, director, producer, critic, and teacher. He was a major influence on the arts in Canada, especially theatre. He was an actor on radio, stage, film, and television; and wrote more than 100 plays, documentaries, musicals, and librettos.
- After the war, he returned to CBC radio as a producer. He founded many theatre centers and festivals, including the Stratford Festival and the National Theatre School. He taught English and theatre at York University (Toronto).
- He was one of three sons of Scottish-born actress and theater director Dora Mavor Moore, and English-born Francis John Moore, an Anglican theologian. His grandfather was economist James Mavor. Mavor started acting on radio when he was fourteen. He graduated from the University of Toronto. During World War II, he served in the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Canada, and later on the Allied Intelligence Committee in London.
