- From 1949 onwards, Lier appeared in a number of films, mostly playing smaller roles.
- From 1950 to 1952 he played in Berlin at the Theater am Kurfürstendamm, and in 1951/52 also at the Tribüne in Berlin.
- In 1953 he moved to the Bavarian State Theater, where he was again a member from 1959 to 1961. He worked primarily at the Munich Kammerspiele, where he remained until 1983.
- He first attracted attention as Sergeant Jaletzki in the first part "Das Tagebuch des Jürgen Wilms" of the early multi-part series "Am grünen Strand der Spree" (1960). In the following years, he mostly played small-time crooks, fraudsters or other shady and devious characters, and soon became the ideal cast in popular crime series.
