In 1944 he played the leading male role in Der Rächer mit der Maske (1944), which featured the first female incarnation of the masked avenger. Thirteen years later he was cast in the defining version Zorro (1957) as Zorro/Diego's father, Don Alejandro de la Vega.

Although he appeared in hundreds of films over his long career, he is best remembered as Guy Williams' stately father in the Walt Disney Zorro (1957) series.
