Passed away 15 days after the passing of his sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver. With his death, Jean Kennedy Smith remains the last surviving child of the American political dynasty that was created by the marriage of Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Kennedy.

Died on the same date (9 years apart) of the same cancer type (glioblastoma) as old friend and fellow legislator Senator John McCain.

Resided in Hyannis, Massachusetts.

As the senior U.S. Senator from Massachusetts since 1962. He was first elected to the Senate on 6 November 1962 after a special election was held.

After accidentally driving his car off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, resulting in the drowning death of Mary Jo Kopechne, he was convicted of leaving the scene of an accident (18 July 1969).

For all my years in public life, I have believed that America must sail toward the shores of liberty and justice for all. There is no end to that journey, only the next great voyage. We know the future will outlast all of us, but I believe that all of us will live on in the future we make.
