Jones' first husband was an officer in the Merchant Marines. The couple had son Denny in 1945, followed by Tim in 1947. Her second husband was screenwriter Bill Davenport.

She was originally cast to play Becky Thatcher in Die Abenteuer von Tom Sawyer und Huckleberry Finn (1938), but after a growth spurt, the studio thought she was too tall for the role and recast her as Mary Sawyer.

The daughter of actress and persistent stage mother Freda Jones, and sister of Margaret Jones, Marvin Jones, and Macon Jones, Marcia developed personal and emotional problems later in life, which triggered a severe alcohol problem. She later received a degree in religious science and conquered her dependency.

Was in three Oscar Best Picture nominees: Der Champ (1931), Imitation of Life (1934), and Das Leben des Emile Zola (1937); the last of these won Best Picture.
