He was killed while attempting to land his aircraft (an AT-6D Texan) at Merced Army Air Corps Field (Merced, California) during the final 30 minutes of his basic training.

His movie career was apparently driven by his father, who would not allow him to socialize with the other kids and allegedly abused him in an attempt to prevent the boy from growing out of his role.

Regular cast member of "Our Gang" shorts between 1927 and 1933. Acquired the nickname "Wheezer" from his first day on the set, when he "ran around the studio so much he began to wheeze".

Brother of Dickie Hutchins.

When Wheezer's contract was up for renewal in 1933. His parents walked out of Hal Roach's office demanding a higher scale. Thus Wheezer missed the last 4 episodes of the 1932 season as the gang introduced the new leader Dickie Moore. Subsequently the following year undernourished and approaching his tween years Wheezer looked ridiculous wearing a beanie. Roach terminated his contract.
