- Her early credits are often confused with those of Carol Hughes, who at one time was also billed as "Kay Hughes." Carol eventually changed her stage name to "Carol Hughes" to end the confusion. Kay made her film debut with Broadway-Melodie 1936 (1935).
- Did several westerns in the late 1930s, three with "Mesquiteer" cowboy Robert Livingston and two with Gene Autry. Kay was Autry's fourth leading lady to give him an on-screen kiss.
- Always wanted to be a dancer but a life-threatening infection, which had surgeons taking pieces of six ribs out of her over a series of operations, had her focus on acting. Ironically, her very first film role was as a dancer in the musical Broadway-Melodie 1936 (1935). It was very difficult and painful for her.
