Follows a group of feline humanoids called the Thundercats, who have fled their destroyed home planet, Thundera, to seek refuge on the distant planet Third Earth (our earth in the far future) as they make new friends and enemies.

Lion-O is haunted by the recurring nightmares of Thunderians being killed on Thundera while he fled to the safety of Third Earth with Jaga and the other ThunderCats. Jaga later tells Lion-O that 3 more Thundercats have, in fact, survived and are also living on Third Earth. The ThunderCats decide to search for the 3 new Thunderians, but Mumm-Ra has plans as well and takes the new Thunderians as his prisoners to Fire Rock Mountain. Lion-O loses the Sword of Omens in an avalanche while Panthro battles the Fist-Pounder with the ThunderTank as the ThunderCats close in on rescuing the Thunderians from Fire Rock Mountain, but they'll need supernatural help if they are to pass through the Thundranium gasses to reach them.

Mumma-ra learns about Excalibur, the greatest sword ever created. He changes into King Arthur, and asks the Lady of the Lake for Excalibur. He meets with the Thundercats, who greet him as a potential ally. Soon "Arthur" challenges Lion-O to a duel, which he foolishly accepts. They will all learn which sword is stronger, the Sword of Omens, or Excalibur.

The Thundercats capture the Lunataks and exile them to Exile Isle, an asteroid in deep space far from Third Earth. There the villains soon meet up with the Captain Cracker and hatch a plan of escape.

Wise Jaga leads a group of nobles, the Thundercats, as they escape their home planet of THUNDERA with direction to the Third Earth of a small solar system.
