At the beginning of their careers Oskar, Max and Viktor created a superstar clown trio called The Busters. Their clownery personified little islands of freedom in the midst of a motionless swamp of resignation during the communist regime of the former Czechoslovakia. An explosive disagreement, however, led to the three clowns breaking up. As it turns out, the clowns, beloved by the nation, can't stand each other. Now, after thirty years in exile, Oskar (Didier Flamand) returns to end his artistic career in Prague. The meeting with his former friends leads to an unavoidable confrontation with now morbidly obese Viktor (Jirí Lábus) and terminally ill Max (Oldrich Kaiser). Even after all this time the question remains the same: who will have the last laugh?

August Fools is a romantic comedy set against the political background of the Cold War. Elsa (Kati Outinen), a middle-aged hat maker and part-time clairvoyant, is apparently in total control of her life - until the man she once loved and lost walks in through the door of her Helsinki hat shop in 1962. Jan (Miroslav Etzler), a Czech jazz musician, is in town to perform at the "International Festival of Peace and Friendship of the Youth of the World." For more than two decades Elsa believed the man was dead. Elsa initially wants to stay away from Jan - and especially from the Festival, which for her is just another attempt by the International Communists to brainwash the good, unsuspecting citizens of Western countries, such as Finland. But Jan is persistent, persuasive and charming. As Elsa eventually overcomes her fear of love and commitment, she realizes there is only one solution if the two of them want to be together for more than the seven days of the Festival.

A small-time hustler Jarda Kuchar (Petr Ctvrtnícek) every summer rents his apartment only to escape to a remote lake in the middle of nowhere. For three months each year he is the big-city-weary hotshot in a former holiday resort, especially for a local villager named Kamil Hospes (Josef Polásek), with whom Jarda runs a picturesque pub, the Tropicana. The regulars consist of a pair of odd-ball brothers, Jirka and Peter, and a caretaker of the local transformer, Pepa Vrtilek. However, this season will be different: a local legend - a monster of a catfish called Lojza - has appeared! Ever the opportunist, Jarda sees a chance to improve his income: by inviting all the fishermen to a grand "fish out". Jarda secretly calls "The Successful Fisherman" magazine to attract the fishing public. "The public" in this case is represented by a father/son duo with a secret ambition to be on the cover of the magazine, no matter what! But this is only the beginning of Jarda's problems. A surprise visit from his 20-year-old daughter Pavla, whom Jarda avoided for three years, is under way...
