After serving sixteen years at her majesty's pleasure Bulla is out on the streets again, but things start to go wrong from the moment he steps out when he finds out he's lost everything on the outside world.

Returning to Reading after boyfriend Sasha has dumped him Simon recalls how, when he undertook to compile a family tree as a school project, he discovered that his parents never actually got married and the 'wedding photo' was a doctored version of Princess Diana's wedding shoot. The truth was that both parents inadvertently stood the other up but they decide they will finally make it legal and Simon has designed a bridal gown for his mother to put Princess Diana's to shame. After the wedding sister Ashlene announces that she too is an unmarried mother and Aunty Hayley accidentally gets into bed with the groom.

In 1998 Simon and Kylie form a pop band called E-male and hunky music teacher Mr. Carr offers to manage them. To Simon's surprise, when his Dad invites taciturn new neighbour Ross Kemp to dinner, he brings his significant other, who happens to be Mr. Carr. The two men have a big bust-up but Mr.Carr still takes Simon and Kylie to Birmingham for the Eurovision Song Contest. The boys get locked in a toilet and are rescued by contest winner Dana International, with whom they also appear, by accident, on stage. Simon grabs a plume from Dana's costume and years later it's still on his Mum's hat, though when he meets Dana again in the street she is not keen to reacquaint herself with him.

Simon recalls the gardening frenzy of 1998 when, inspired by television programme, 'Ground Force',everyone wanted a water feature, including him. To raise the money for one he and Kylie work as Saturday boys in Monsieur Antoine's boutique, where they excel, until Aunty Hayley comes in for a bra fitting, which ends up taking place in the shop window. Inspired by hunky Tiger, Reba's personal trainer, the boys make their own fitness video, which leads to friction between Reba and Ashlene and the creation, by default, of Simon's very own water feature. Still, he gets to duet with Elaine Paige.

Simon ponders on his campness. Even as a baby he was singing show tunes. In 1998 the family is all set for its first holiday abroad. However, thanks to a poster campaign by Reba, annoyed when she thought Andy was making a pass at her, his business is halved and they cannot afford to go. Instead they tell everyone they are going abroad whilst creating their own holiday atmosphere indoors, eventually including Kylie, who rumbles them. When Reba's violent ex-husband turns up Kylie and his dog Madonna face up to and see him off, leading Simon to realise that 'campness' is seizing the moment.

When Reading's own prize-winning conceptual artist Stacey Bile runs Andy over,Debbie socks her - before becoming her drinking buddy and her muse, going to London with her to set up her new installation. But when Stacey starts to exploit her Debbie takes revenge and steals her Turner Prize certificate. Meanwhile Aunty Hayley teaches the boys Indian dancing, dispenses phone advice to Dannii Minogue and demolishes the statue of Reading's other famous daughter, Kate Winslet.

Bullied for being gay Simon decides to run away from Reading on the same night that Debbie is holding a party to celebrate her television acting debut in a crime reconstruction where she plays a woman missing from home, who is her exact double. However,thanks to a bus strike and the influence of the gorgeous Mickey - whom he will one day marry - Simon returns home in time to see Debbie punch Jackson, his chief tormentor, for impregnating Ashlene and picking on her son. Simon is so happy he falls off a wall and gets his gash, while the missing woman comes back to complain about Debbie's feeble impersonation of her.

When Emily Somerton is recruited to work as an assistant housekeeper to crime writer Hugo Doré, she discovers the premises are home to a bizarre, unsolved Victorian murder mystery.

Vicar Adam Smallbone and his solicitor wife Alex have been at his new urban parish of St. Saviours for a month but the congregation is tiny and,when part of a church window is broken, Adam learns that the insurance will not cover it and he must raise funds himself. Suddenly the church is full of families,anxious to give donations and presents,if the vicar will have a say in admitting their children to the local church school,highly-rated by OFSTED.These include the local M.P. Patrick Yam. The headmistress Ellie will play along but this means delaying the wedding of a very nice couple in order to accommodate her sister's rushed marriage. Finally Adam decides. He will not be bribed and things must stay as they are but,thanks to devoted but dozy parishioner Colin,he finds out how the window was broken.

The archdeacon visits the church on a Sunday when there are only five people present. Adam prays for a miracle,which seems to come in the form of Darren, a charismatic evangelist who brings his three figure congregation from St. James,which is being renovated - along with white sofas, fruit smoothies and a rapper. Darren goes down a storm and contributes ten grand to St. Saviors' funds but Adam believes he is just a showman and refuses to let him preach again in his church. Colin inadvertently saves the day by getting over-excited about one of Darren's lady helpers.

Thieves steal the lead from the church roof so,to raise cash,Adam allows a Muslim children's group to use the hall.He is impressed by their piety compared to the rude kids he goes to address at the church primary school and this inspires him to oppose a strip club being opened opposite the church. He visits an existing club to know his enemy but,after the inevitable embarrassment,learns the new club will not be opening after all. Colin is almost arrested whilst trying to stop the real lead thieves and makes his escape in a burkah.

Adam is envious when a vicar he once knew,Roland Wise,becomes a mainstay on radio's 'Thought For the Day' and a frequent contributor to the press. So,to raise his own profile,he secures an interview on television but nerves cause him to say,"We're all gay in the church," which is not well-received. He asks Roland for help but is amazed when his colleague admits to why he has become a media darling and finds that Roland is just as insecure as himself.

Feeling shunned in the pub,Adam is pleased to meet Leon,who wants to get married to Debs in his church. They become drinking buddies and go jogging together. Adam invites Leon and Debs to dinner and discovers that,fifteen years earlier,as students,Leon and Alex had sex on a bus. Adam is concerned that Leon is still flirting with Alex and wonders whether to conduct the ceremony but Debs calls it off when she finds out that Leon is trying to get back with an unimpressed Alex - who only has eyes for her husband.

Following a poor review of his last sermon on Godslot.com,Adam considers packing it in and stays at home watching TV whilst a bogus vicar roams the city,obtaining freebies and harassing the Bishop of London. After making a fool of himself at a vicars and tarts party organized by Ellie,he gets drunk and is almost arrested - but discovers redemption and the identity of the impostor.
