Debbie Thompson was an ordinary homemaker who wanted desperately to become a newspaper reporter. Her husband Jim was a well-known sportswriter for the Los Angeles Sun, and Debbie's schemes and plans to build her own career constantly put him on the spot. The resemblance to "I Love Lucy" isn't coincidental, since this show was produced by "Lucy" writer Jess Oppenheimer. Debbie's sister Charlotte was her sidekick in her nutty plans, to brother-in-law Bob's chagrined.

A group of sex-crazy guys pose as porno filmmakers just to audition groups of lovelies in various states of undress. Eventually, they're pressured into coming up with an actual movie.

Debbie gave Jim a new set of golf clubs, but she didn't tell him that she was given the set for a publicity arrangement. She didn't fulfill her part of the bargain, and now the company demands she return them or face charges. Now she must give them back without her husband getting wise.

Debbie fills in for Jim on his advice column, which she assumes she will be good at. However the people who write in end up in more trouble after following Debbie's words of wisdom.

Debbie and Charlotte decide to dabble in the stock market but they create surprising consequences. After they invest, they cause the stock to be over valued, causing havoc in the financial markets.

Debbie finds out the city has plans for the vacant lot where the neighborhood kids play baseball. They plan on turning the property into a flower garden and Debbie decides to lead the protest against it.

Debbie's appearance in a TV commercial jeopardizes her husband Jim's chance of having his own sport's show.

Debbie learns that Jim is writing an article on a precision flying team. She decides she should be a part of the experience so she enrolls in a pilot school. But her instructor reveals he doesn't know how to land a plane after they are airborne.

Debbie connives to have Jim anonymously submit her article in a sports writing contest. But when it wins Debbie is unsure whether to come forward and claim the prize.

Charlotte thinks Bob is having an affair with his new secretary. But Charlotte has no proof so she enlists Debbie to help her find evidence that her husband is cheating.

Debbie is tricked into revealing the whereabouts of two Russians who have defected.

After Debbie is offered a movie contract she daydreams what her life will be like as a big star. But reality intrudes and Debbie finds out that her existence is more like a nightmare.
