Shortly after Joan adopts an injured crow, her neighborhood is beset by a jewel thief and all the stolen items are discovered in the Stephens' home. Joan's friends fear she has developed an acute case of kleptomania, but the investigating detectives believe she's just a garden-variety thief.

Joan decides that her friends Wally and Sally would be perfect for each other, so she plans to get them together. Unfortunately, her plans include a scheme to make Wally jealous by having another man pay attention to Sally. As usual, her plan backfires.

Joan has $600 she doesn't want Brad to know about, so she's looking for a place to hide it. Since she knows he hardly ever goes hunting, she stuffs the money into the barrel of his shotgun. Unfortunately, he goes along on a duck-hunting trip before she can get the money out. Complications ensue.

Joan goes hat shopping and has an argument with a lady. When it ends up she and Brad are having dinner with the lady and her husband, Joan takes up acrobatics in the restaurant in order to avoid embarrassment.

Joan meddles in her sister's romance with a young hot-rodder with disastrous results. Her plan backfires when the speed demon falls for Joan instead of Beverly.

Joan tries to keep Brad from going to his class reunion because she thinks his old girlfriend will be there.

Brad is hospitalized for a broken toe. Joan tries to visit after hours, when they won't let her visit, she feigns an illness so she can be admitted to the hospital. She almost has gallbladder surgery by trading rooms to be next to him.

When Joan learns that the snooty Helen Cavanaugh will be attending the charity ball, she insists that Brad give her money to buy a new gown. After arguing over the household budget, Brad agrees to give her $412 if Joan agrees to buy all her clothing for the next year from that allotment. Disaster ensues when the delivery man goes to the wrong closet at the Stevens home and takes Joan's entire wardrobe, rather than the clothes she set aside for the local rummage sale.

Joan thinks she'll impress her old schoolmates with the fact she married a judge until she finds out they have all achieved great personal success on their own.

Joan enters her home in a Home of the Week contest.

Joan claims Brad is always trusting when Mabel's husband is suspicious of the attentions his wife receives from Dr. Salazar. When Joan is told a husband in love is jealous she goes all out to provoke Brad's emotions.

Joan finds the dress that Judge Stevens hid for their neighbor's birthday celebration. Not realizing the expensive gown wasn't meant for her Joan makes drastic alterations which ruin it. Desperate to make up for her gaff, Joan agrees to bake the birthday cake for the party, which only makes matters worse.

Brad and Joan simultaneously spend their $1100 of "mad money". Brad buys a mountain fishing lodge that he has been eyeing for some time. Joan buys a pleasure boat. Brad agrees to give up the cabin after trying it out as he has a guaranteed reimbursement agreement with the seller. Joan pretends to not want to go so that Brad will take off without her. That will let her conspire with Bev and Tom to sabotage Brad's trial run. She arrives with Bev and Tom a bit after Brad. They remove the rotor from his car engine so that he will be stranded at the cabin. Bev and Tom leave with all the food and drill some leaks in the roof.

It's election time. Bradley is campaigning and wants to show the voters how happily married he is. Unfortunately, Joan starts sneezing whenever he comes within ten feet of her and thinks she's become allergic to him.

To get more exercise, Joan turns to ballet.

Joan tries to get her aunt a date with a wealthy neighbor but the neighbor thinks it's Joan who wants the date.

Joan tries to raise money for Brad's birthday by reselling clothes she pays for using her charge account.

Joan wants Brad to grow a mustache, thinking that it will make him look more "dignified" and give him a better shot at being appointed a Superior Court judge.

Brad encourages Joan to become an actress. Then, he invites a prospective campaign contributor to dinner only to find that Joan has invited another possible contributor.

Joan tries to learn all she can about the criminal world to prepare for her appearance with Brad on a TV panel show.
